Reasons why this is big upset: - Holmes was the defending state champ with their top 3 players from that team still playing, 2 of which were among the top players in the state. - Holmes was preseason nationally ranked and #1 ranked in the state. - Holmes was a top 5 team in the state for the entire season. Newport was unranked the entire season.

Obviously yesterdays Newport upset of Holmes was a very big upset. I suppose how big is debatable. What were some other big upsets in NKY boys basketball?

Bob Vanderpool was and is a great man and coach. Obviously that 77 team was excellent as was the 85 team. The best Newport team I remember in the last 20 years was the team with Donnie Miller, Donnie Mills, Jeremy Scott, and Stretch Greeene. I am sure I am forgetting a couple of others on that team. I think Mark Krebs coached that team and they were upset by Highlands in the regional. That team was certainly a regional contender. If Stretch would have had a good leg, no telling how good he could have been.

Oh really? Can't recall a single person saying I wouldn't be surprised if Newport pulls the upset against defending state champ Holmes (with 2 of the top players in the state) after Newport got drilled in the districts by NCC.

Is that the biggest upset ever in nky prep sports?

Like NCC06, it is Bellevue's fault there is a blind draw and there is nothing wrong with saying they will killed in their match up. That is a statement that is used on theis board daily.

Maybe I am envisioning the finished product because, (again) it is already being done in a KHSAA sponsored sport. A sport where the expertise of the sport is far more concentrated. I haven't followed prep basketball outside the 9th at all and I would guess I could come pretty close to getting it right. It just isn't that hard to do following district and regionals (when many of the top teams will elminate each other) leaving only a handful of top teams to decide the top seeds and certainly a few Cinderellas to occupy the higher seeds. Think it through Jim, you aren't seeding/ranking the entire state, you arent even trying to seed a tourney with the top 16 teams in the state, and you are not deciding who gets in. It isn't that difficult.

What could be more fun than revealing the top 4 seeds on the sweet 16 bracket show and then the rest of the field. It would only enhance the event. We don't need 100% agreement. We only need the process to be credible. I am not sure why we need to debate the details of who would be candidates on the selection committee, but the pool is unlimited - officials, ex-officials, AD's, ex-coaches, principals, other more at-large candidates (similar to those elected to the KHSAA). Again it is already being done, just not in basketball and basketball is arguably easier to seed (fewer number to seed, more information, more eyes having actually seen the participants).

Did you read? The AD's were suggested to seed the regional tourney. I would hope that each region would have people familiar enough with the state basketball scene that would be worthy candidates to seed the state tourney.

For the region: How about a rotating committee of ten (10) comprised of AD's from the schools in the region whose teams are not competing in the state tourney. For the state: How about each region elects one person to be their representative on the state seeding committee. Jim: You do realize that basketball wouldn't be a trailblazer in seeding a statewide tourney. Correct?

I think you are grossly underestimating how willing people would be to obtain such power.

The line would be long of individuals wanting to do this (both at the regional and state levels) for free.

The NCAA tourney committeee is seeding 65 teams. The "state selection committee" would only have to seed 16 and the "regional selection committee would only have to seed eight. Plus most of the NCAA controversy is over who gets in and who is left out, that isn't even an issue with seeding the state tourney or the regional. Certainly there would be the occasional controversy, but if they wanted to do it, it wouldn't be difficult.

Oh really? I would bet there are quite a few people who have seen all of the top teams in the state play and would be qualified to be on a "selection committee". We know there are computer rankings, which come out weekly that could aid in the process. There is no reason the state toureny couldn't be seeded, if they wanted it to be. What didn't I explain? The sweet 16 is 100% a blind draw and the regional is a modified blind draw. Seeding the district would be in line with what goes on in later rounds. I don't want to argue for a blind draw. I would rather have everything seeded, but lets not act like districts that have a blind draw are doing something really crazy and out there. What is crazy is that the KHSAA doesn't mandate that all districts are seeded or that all districts use a blind draw.

Oh really? The NCAA tourney is able to seed every year and all 64 of those teams don't play twice every year. News flash, but there are other methods.

I am not sure I support a blind draw and I am not sure what the best system is, however, I don't think one can speak against a blind draw when it is one of the key components of the sweet 16.

Understood and I was not really trying to comment on the "eligiblity" aspect of the case, as much as, I was trying to point out the ebb and flow of athletes to/from Danville. Maybe Danville has a problem with this transfer because it is "against KHSAA rules" or maybe Danville really doesn't believe it is more blessed to give than receive.

I have heard it said that if the "sending" school does not object to the transfer that the KHSAA does not investigate and will approve the transfer. Is that true?
