"This feels pretty amazing to finally get us back to the region"

Tommy Sorrell Bellevue Head Basketball Coach Bellevue Tigers

Coach Sorrell if you draw long enough you'll eventually pull a rabbit out of the hat. Nothing really amazing about drawing a team with a recored of 2-21. It's even less amazing that you beat them.

:scared:Sarcasm!!:thumb:

Everyone knows that the draw in that district is wrong and that Highlands and NCC belong in the regional tournament, but really is it necessary to mock a coach's comment? I am sure that it is exciting for Coach Sorrell and his kids to have the privilege of playing in a regional tournament. Until the state changes something, it is what it is. Coach Sorell is a good guy and he and his kids work hard, so I wish them luck. I am just not a fan of mocking coaches and poking comments, they take enough of that from their own parents.

Did you really think he was going to come out and say, "Yeah, I know based on our record and talent level, we don't deserve to be in the Regionals. With that in mind, I would like to forfeit our spot in order for Highlands and NCC to represent our district."???? :idunno:

I believe his excitement was sincere and those comments were based on that excitement. He probably understands that he got lucky with the draw and that his team's chances of being competitive in the Region are slim. However, until the district decides to seed, these things will happen. He (and his team) might as well take advantage.

I'm curious though...

He was obviously approached by the media for a comment regarding their win and its significance. What comments do you propose he should have said instead?

Everyone knows that the draw in that district is wrong

Everyone doesn't know that. They don't seed the Sweet 16 (or the region for that matter). Truthfully not seeding the district is a little more consistent than the districts that do seed.

There are only a few districts in the entire state that still blind draw. The purpose of the regional tournament is to narrow down to the best 8 teams from the region and ultimately send the best team to the state tournament. In order to do this, there has to be seeding in the districts. My comment was in support of Coach Sorrell and his team. I wish them the best of luck, but the state needs to intervene so that the regional and state tournaments are represented by the best basketball teams and NCC and Highlands are two of the best 8 teams in the region without question.

It's not practical to seed the state tournament. The region would be possible to seed if each team had to play so many in region games to determine region standings...but really seeding the region isn't hardly practical either. The attempt at placing winners against runner ups is a compromise to this. However at the district level where you are only talking about 4 or 5 teams playing each other at least once is certainly a possibility and seeding is only fair IMO. I think it's a shame that districts aren't forced to seed...or at least forced to be uniform across the state, seed or not.

I unerstand you support the blind draw and that is your right. It is the system we are stuck with. However saying it is more consistent makes no sense. How isit more consisitent other than the runner up consistantly being destroyed in the 1st round of the region.

As far as the region not seeding that is true, but there are some differeces.

1. All 4 district runner ups have to play a district champ in the firdt round.

2. Only the region champ moves forward. Eliminating the chace of blind luck moving someone forward that has no chance in the next stage of the tournament.

I am not sure I support a blind draw and I am not sure what the best system is, however, I don't think one can speak against a blind draw when it is one of the key components of the sweet 16.

The reason regions and the state tournaments aren't seeded is that seeding requires teams to play twice during the season. In the region and state that is impossible to do. It's not a problem for districts.

Oh really? The NCAA tourney is able to seed every year and all 64 of those teams don't play twice every year. News flash, but there are other methods.

It is a component in the Sweet sixteen because there isn't abetter way to do it. You can't just seed them by the rankings because no one has seen all the teams and has no way to know which ones deserve to be seeded ahead of the other. In the district there is a better way becaus e all the teams play eachother and you can use the records like 95% of the rest of the state.

You still haven't explained your CONSISTANT statement yet.

The KHSAA is not going to adopt the NCAA method.

District seeding is about all you're going to see.

They have a huge commitee that watch game film endlessly of the top teams and vote on it with some degree of knowledge. And it maight be a better way but that is a huge undertaking. to seed in district is very easy and requires only people voting to want whats best for the tournament on a whole and not just for their school at the presnt time.

Also, the only 100% true seeding is head to head play by each team during the season, which a district can do but not region or state.

The NCAA has a ton of problems and controversies with their seeding methods. College Gameday spent 15 minutes talking about it last Saturday.
