  1. I really expected X to give them a much better game. In the first game a few big plays allowed the score to get out of hand. In this game it wasn't the big plays, it was total domination. The enormous X linemen couldn't move the Trinity linemen. It was a really impressive performance. When X couldn't run the ball they tried to pass. They passed like it was the first time they had ever tried it. There was a quote from Coach Wolford in this morning's CJ. The comment was about the varsity game, but I think it describes the offensive philosophy at all levels of the X program. ""As an old offensive lineman, I like to win up front and wear people out." That philosophy will win a lot of games, I just don't think it beats Trinity very often. Trinity is tough to wear out. It will happen sometimes, just not most of the time.
  2. This would seem to be the best X team of the past several years. Maybe their best since 2009. This years Trinity team seems to be coming together. The defense is head and shoulders better than at the beginning of the season, (thank you WC and Moeller). The offense still has work to do in the running game. For me, the key to the game is whether the Trinity pass defense can stop X while leaving seven in the box. If they can, Trinity wins by a couple of TDs. If not, the size and strength of X may make it a long night. Trinity 21-7.
  3. The 1990 game was broadcast nationally on Sports Channel America. I dug it out to show a current freshman Coach Logan running back the opening kickoff for a TD.
  4. The number of classes isn't about the number of schools, it is about the size differences among the schools. Reducing the number of classes only exacerbates that problem.
  5. Trinity raised over $12,000 for hurricane relief at the gate. Saw a nice tweet from Champagnet Catholic saying thanks.
  6. I suspect that the answers to this question will always be determined by which one you knew best and when you went to school. I think it is hard to argue with Bob Beatty as the best football coach. And it is more than Xs and Os. I have never seen anyone better at getting kids buy in to the idea of team success over individual success. For us old guys, Jim Kennedy started it all. There is no finer man, teacher and coach than Chuck Servino. But for service to the school in many capacities, dedication to Trinity, longevity (46 years and counting I think) and as a role model for young men, it is hard not to pick Dennis Lampley. When I think "Coach", he is still the one that comes to mind.
  7. I very happy that the game is on. Now, can one of you French scholars out there tell me the proper pronunciation for Champagnat?
  8. You know, my guess is that they have more to worry about than whether they are interfering with our Friday night plans. If they are able to come, great. If not, best wishes to them and they will be in our prayers.
  9. As I remember, Rondale actually received more votes than Lucas did last week, it just wasn't enough. Still, a great honor to have nominees two weeks in a row.
  10. Back after a great weekend. The second half of this game is why you play such a tough schedule. In the first half I thought the Trinity offense was hesitating for just an instant. That hesitation was just enough against a team as good as Moeller. Late in the first half the tempo started to pick up and it spread throughout the team. First the coaches started to call the plays faster, the team went with a faster tempo and the decision making followed. Also, the receivers started doing a much better job sustaining their blocks. On defense, I thought that the dbs tightened the coverage in the second half. Neither team ran the ball well the entire game. The tighter coverage made a huge difference. If they had been playing a lesser team, there would have been no reason to fix those things. It was a very enjoyable game.
  11. Voting is now closed. Congratulations Luke, National Player of the Week.
  12. The X team I saw was SLOW. Those linemen are huge and I'll admit that I was concerned in the second quarter that they would start to pound down the much smaller Trinity kids. It didn't work out that way. I guess you can't pound what you can't catch.
  13. I can't fault them for the decision. If there is any lightening on Friday games would have to be postponed into a holiday weekend. Also, rain on Friday would reduce gate.
  14. Just had a chance to watch the highlight video. Serious size and speed from WC, but there were also some missed tackles. That will have to get better.
  15. As much as I like calling the X-men worms, but given the stripes, wouldn't it be better to ask if the caterpillar has turned? That said, the answer is no. The freshmen from X looked huge last night but the were unable to use their size advantage. Trinity was much faster. Those thin, athletic linemen for Trinity will get bigger and stronger and they will still be athletic.
  16. 20-7 T at half. Size vs speed and so far, speed is winning.
