From what I've seen in the 12th it's often the case that the better teams are the ones with good, solid team defense and they may or may not be offensive powerhouses. DCA and Mercer's teams from last year are good examples. In my opinion a strong defense at the high school level can really benefit from a shot clock. If you can make the other team work the ball looking for a shot right up to when the clock runs out you can often force a bad shot.

That's one of the reasons I don't go along with the idea of giving your starter every single snap. The backup quarterback needs some regular playing time just in case he's a) a great game player and should be playing more or b) he's going to choke if he ever gets in a real game. In either case, you'll never know if all he does is hold a clipboard. He's only 1 snap away from being a your starter in the case of an unfortunate injury.

Add Maddox Hager to that list. He would have been back to Boyle this season after playing at GRC last year.

The way I calculate it they've lost 41 points of scoring out of 61 and Carson Fraley accounted for 10 of the 20 ppg they've got coming back. Hargis and some of the younger guys will definitely have to take a big jump. From what I saw last year he's got some ability but he and Fraley will definitely need some help from the front court. .

I heard the same thing about Anderson's injury. Given the preliminary report he's probably out for the year. When you take away Cook and Idlewine to graduation and now Farmer and Anderson they'll be pretty thin. They usually have a good feeder program though. Were their 9th grade and JV teams pretty good last year?

I saw some regional rankings for the boys from the Cats Pause with the top teams and players in the 12th (the one I was interested in….). I was wondering if there was anything out yet on the girls on a region by region basis.

I'd say so. I was interested in the regional rankings more so than the state though.

I've been looking but I've not been able to find any preseason rankings for the high school girls. Are any of them out yet?

He might think it will put him in consideration to become Centre's next head coach. The person they hired is listed as an "interim coach". He's lived in Danville for years. Did he move to Frankfort when he was coaching there or did he just drive it? He might want to stay in Danville.

I would think that Hughes should be in the conversation for Mr. Football. Is he getting any college interest?

Is it my computer or has Somerset gone away from their traditional colors of purple and gold? Those uniforms don't look like anything I've ever seen a Somerset team wear in my life.

Actually, they are a 6-9 sophomore and a 6-3 freshman. The 6-9 player is solidly built and the 6-3 player is really slim. All F1 students have to sit out 365 days from when they enroll. They can play JV and practice with the varsity but that is all.

I tend to agree with you but there seems to be a sliding scale on the defense/offense metric. D1 coaches tend to go for the "athletes" who can't shoot so well if they have size. How many times have you seen high school rankings with a player ranked highly and the comment "he needs to work on his shot......." is in the commentary? Very often the coaches will take a chance on a guy who has D1 size and athleticism even if they aren't good shooters. Plus, given the way the game is called these days with the increased physicality it's possible to be a decent scorer and not particularly a good shooter if you do most of your work around the basket. I think that you're right in general but in some systems, especially ones that rely on 3 point shooting, sometimes the coach will give up a little on defense to gain an outside shooting threat. I think that's especially true for coaches who approach defense as a team concept and emphasize helping and realize that it's almost impossible to stop a good driver one on one.

I understand. It just seems to me that given how much ticket prices (and concessions) have risen in the last few years there would be enough to pay for a shot clock keeper, especially if they had one of the JV officials stick around as someone suggested.

He's getting some interest. He had a good summer in AAU despite being slowed down for awhile with a sprained ankle.

I thought Luke Imfeld had the ability to play DI for somebody. Anyone who can shoot like he does can be a contributor in the right program.

There are several things that could be done to improve high school basketball in KY. Better, and more consistent, officiating would top my list. Tightening up the transfer rules and enforcement of the rules would help as well. I like the idea of a shot clock and 35 seconds is more than enough time to get a decent shot. Plus, if the defense is good enough to keep their opponent from getting a shot in 35 seconds more power to them. I understand all of the logistical problems and the people pointing them out have some good arguments. As far as a rules change that would make a big difference goes I'd love to see KY adopt the Elam ending. I hate when a tight games turns into a foul fest during the last 2. minutes. That's the definition of boring basketball.

It seems that with today’s technology it would be possible to develop a system that the officials could stop with their whistle. One official could start it and any of the three could stop it. They could have a control panel at the scorer’s table to reset it. It might not work but it would be worth a look. It would potentially save a lot of money and put the responsibility on the officials.

Last year in the 12th region there were plenty of times that the better defensive teams like DCA and Mercer were able to keep teams from getting a decent shot in 35 seconds. It will help teams like that.

It's amazing that when you go to the UK staff directory for football there are about 20 coaches listed and they look so disorganized. They can't get the right guys on the field, can't run the plays, and burn timeouts because they are totally lost. These players are being paid to play football and the coaches are being paid to coach it. What are they doing?
