I think this ranking looks pretty accurate!

The teams that stand out for having done better than expected are Somerset & Mcreary. I think Jackson and Kelley are the two best coaches in the region year in and year out. I don’t think Jackson should be in the running this year but Kelley probably should. So I guess I’d put Young, Davis and Kelley at the top of the list for this year’s award. The only other name I might consider would be Fraley at Pulaski.

It looks like they have talent there for the next 3 years. If a change happens, what kind of interest would there be?

How many did Barnes have?

Somerset just keeps improving. At the beginning of the year, not sure I’d have had them top 10. Now they’re a team that no one is going to want to play.

I’ll wait to see how next week’s game goes between DCA & Boyle. I need to see Boyle beat them before I can say it’s a Boyle/Lincoln final. I’m not saying they won’t win this time around but am not going to assume they will. As someone already said, it’s all about matchups. I think DCA presents some issues for Boyle especially when their big man is in the game. If you look at the stats, Boyle doesn’t shoot the ball well from three and the DCA big man, if healthy and able to stay out of foul trouble, changes everything around the basket. Add Dut and Ridge who are both 6’4” or so and Boyd who is a 6’1” PG and they have a significant size advantage at 4/5 positions. If DCA plays a defense that uses that size to their advantage, it poses a significant challenge for a team who doesn’t shoot well from three. It should be interesting!

With the game being at Lincoln, I think it’s a 50/50 game. Both teams have been very inconsistent. Whoever shoots and plays well that night will win.

They would be my pick as well.

I think the top 3 are the top 3, just not sure in what order. From what I’ve seen, I’m pretty high on West Jessamine at this point in the season. I do not think Mcreary Central and Danville are top 5 teams. Right now I’d say Boyle & DCA are better, and probably Somerset. I do realize Mcreary just beat Somerset by a couple points. I expect one of those top 3 teams to cut down the nets but, given the right draw, a healthy Boyle or DCA (whichever gets out of district) has an outside chance.

Above it was mentioned that Wayne has two freshman and an 8th grader and that Boyle has two 8th graders. I think that Mercer has two that likely didn’t play. I thought Somerset had a couple that get meaningful varsity minutes as well but I don’t know if they played yesterday. But, even with the above, that’s only 3 teams in the region that we’ve mentioned that had freshmen (& 8th graders) that weren’t playing. So it’s still a nice accomplishment. They seem to have some bright years ahead with some talent coming up and a really good young coach.

Tough to know how much this really means. How many of the best freshmen didn’t even play for their respective teams? Not saying that was the case this year but it usually is.

I don’t think this is a bad matchup for Somerset. I expect they’ll be just fine.

Lincoln is deserving of first. West is finally where I thought they’d be. Danville is living dangerously with their current district seeding. I still don’t feel like Wayne is a top 5 team. Somerset is the surprise team of the year, the one that has significantly exceeded expectations. On the flip side, DCA sitting at #9 hasn’t lived up to expectations. Lincoln and West are my favorites at this point. Pulaski also has the ability to put together enough wins to get it done. And if DCA can get back to their early season form, they could be right there as well, but they don’t have much time left to fix things.

Coach Young is doing an excellent job this year. Very impressed!

The DCA version of the 2/3 extends the guards while their big stays close to the basket. That leaves the FT line area pretty open. A traditional 2/3 could be more effective, at least at times. I think their ability to play man to man depends a lot on who Ayiei has to guard. If it is someone that can knock down the mid range or longer jumper, that brings him out and takes away his ability to control the lane. Also, if the other team’s big can put the ball on the floor, that’s another reason that man to man could present a challenge for DCA. It’s a tough situation. they have a great rim protector that they need to keep in the lane but a 2/3 doesn’t necessarily fit their other personnel.

DCA led by 3 at half but Lincoln went on to win by 7, 59-52.

DCA hosts Lincoln tonight at 7:45 in a 45th District showdown. Lincoln comes in undefeated in district play and playing well. DCA, who started the season strong, has struggled in January. Can they turn things around at home? I think it’ll be a close one. I’ll take Lincoln by 6, assuming they have everyone back (other than Bishop).

I agree with your top 3 but, after that, it gets really fuzzy. DCA isn’t playing up their potential, at least not at this point. After that, I think your 4-8 are a complete toss up.

I understand that sentiment. The other teams in the district have proven to be very bearable. Not as good as I had expected, but I think that’s true about the region overalll. I still think it’s easily the best district top to bottom.

I had initially included the All A game between Danville & DCA. After tonight, here are the current records in district games: Lincoln 3-0 DCA 2-1 Boyle 2-2 Garrard 2-3 Danville 0-3

Danville isn’t going to have much success without Barnes. But given that Lincoln still didn’t have Bishop and that the game was at Danville, I am surprised at the margin.

Solid win by Boyle.

Anyone have any details on this one? Not surprised that Corbin won but am shocked at the margin. DCA seems to be struggling right the last few games.

Fair, that’s a solid record. But they’re 1-2 in district play.
