12th Region Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

My pick Wade Davis McCreary Central.  They have won 2 straight district championships and won the 1 seed this year.  He does a tremendous job, and often overlooked.  I don’t pick this solely on W/L record as most of the time those teams have the most talent.  I’m interested to hear other people’s thoughts.  I would give Ryan Young some love too.  Their team has dealt with family tragedies and key injuries throughout, and have done well.  Damon Kelly @ West Jessamine has also done a great job this season. A lot of good coaches in this region.

Davis, Jackson, McKinney and Young in that order.

All good choices. I'm with you, I think Davis should probably get the nod. Kelley is a good choice; I still think West Jessamine sometimes gets overlooked in the region because they weren't traditionally in the region. However, he does a great job. I'd put Young in that group, too. Somerset seemed like they were a year away but have had an excellent season. Can't discount the job of Jeff Jackson at Lincoln, Rodney Woods at Wayne, or Ed McKinney at Danville. There are several others who have done good work this year, too.

Bottom line, there's no obvious choice and a lot of acceptable choices in the 12th Region this year.

Agree 100%.  A lot of teams bunched up with similar seasons.  Speaks to the parity of the region this year.

This is as wide open as I can remember the 12th.   They don't really have a State Champion contender.  But I think pretty much anyone that gets in the Regional Tournament will be dangerous enough to get to the finals.  Barring a couple of big upsets in the District of course.

As for the Coach of the Year, I think I'd go with Davis as well.  His team really knows their roles and are exactly where they are supposed to be all the time.  They really play well together.

Davis, Jackson, McKinney and Young in that order.

That’s a good 4!

I'm on board with Davis getting the nod for Coach of the Year. McCreary Central hasn't historically been a basketball power but this season, they've been a legitimate threat against all region competition. Young, Kelley, Jackson are also contenders.

I don't think McKinney is an option, Danville has done some really good things this season, but 2-6 in district vs these other guys records doesn't hold up in a Coach of the Year decision, regardless of him beating Jackson on Friday.

I like this argument for sure.  I think Young’s biggest case is that weren’t rated high preseason, have dealt with key injuries (PG has been out since first of Jan. and Whitaker went down Sat with ankle and the team rallied behind a FR and 8th grader) and also dealing with death of Godby’s Father on day of All A Championship.  Nobody has been through more than the Jumpers this season.  Coach Jackson and Coach Kelley do a great job year in year out!

How would Somerset and Mccreary Central do in the 45th District? Danville beat both Somerset and Mccreary Central this year. Somerset has one good win against Pulaski County, that's it. They beat Boyle earlier in the season without Jaekie Tarter or Montavin Qusinberry. Somerset don't have DCA or Lincoln on there schedule. Mccreary plays DCA last game of the season. Somerset really hasn't played a tough schedule, playing Somerset Christian 4x a year is not saying much.

The teams that stand out for having done better than expected are Somerset & Mcreary. I think Jackson and Kelley are the two best coaches in the region year in and year out. I don’t think Jackson should be in the running this year but Kelley probably should. So I guess I’d put Young, Davis and Kelley at the top of the list for this year’s award. The only other name I might consider would be Fraley at Pulaski.

Who in the 45th has been good this season outside of Lincoln?  Inconsistent across the board... The Rebels of Boyle Co. just went to Wayne Co and lost, Garrard is average, DCA lost to Wayne in a neutral site game and Danville is up and down.  McCreary would probably be 2nd best team in the 45th and Somerset could beat anyone probably outside of Lincoln Co...Somerset has the best win in the region @ Pulaski (who has lost 1 game @ home in the last two seasons).  I'm sorry, but miss me with the 45th is so great argument.

Somerset has played everyone in the 48th twice because of Christmas Tournament matchups, All A and geographically it makes sense for them with travel expenses...

Just to debunk the Somerset Soft Schedule crowd---@ Boyle, their District Opponents 2X, Neutral Site game with a quality Rowan Co. Team, Neutral Site/Home game with Wayne Co, Home/Home McCreary Central, Neutral Site/Home Danville, Home and Home Southwestern and Away against 16th District 1 seed Metcalfe Co.  They can't help the Christmas tournament matchups and All A Region Draw...  Not bad for an All A team, and they tried to add Lincoln Co. after not winning All A and the Patriots couldn't work it in...They are usually on schedule but athletic dept. thought it would be nice event to play @ Hoosiers gym.

Somerset is not beating DCA, Boyle or Lincoln full strength. Danville had them down 25 neutral site so miss me with that!

Wow you got a huge issue with Somerset.  Just don't understand all the pompus 45th is this and that when every team in the district has been beaten by other teams in the region?  I would think Boyle Co and DCA would two of the most underachieving teams in the region with all the talent on their rosters... I'll give you Lincoln (maybe) but def won't give you Boyle or DCA.  Neither team has done anything noteworthy this season... What exactly have they done that makes them so good?
