  1. Mexico 1 USA 0 Final. Pretty solid first half effort falls short as Berhalter's lousy bench had NOTHING to offer after the break. Martino moved some things around on the field at halftime and Berhalter just didn't have any personnel available to correct it. Had Altidore or Pulisic buried either of their solid chances in the first half, maybe this goes to penalties and anything can happen. You need the breaks to go your way sometimes in a game against a more talented team and they just didn't hit for the US last night. Much better the last two games than anything we've seen from the US in years though. For now... I'll take it.
  2. In a fun coincidence, Rose Lavelle played some club soccer with the Dayton Dutch Lions.
  3. The Barton rickhouse collapse last year is the most interesting from this standpoint because it put a massive hole in the entire future supply of 1792.
  4. Do we have any sense of how much whiskey this is out of all the stock for particular years? Is the industry legitimately going to have to think about an inventory issue and pricing a few years from now?
  5. A friend is having a whole mess of people to her house to swim in her pool and have a cookout. I also always watch "1776" sometime between the 2nd and the 4th.
  6. This flag has apparently come into use by white nationalist groups, who use it as a symbol of the United States at a time when white supremacy was enshrined in the Constitution. There was a controversy some years ago about high schoolers somewhere in Michigan flying the flag during a game against a predominantly black school. I don't remember all of the context.
  7. I liked Comerica. It's odd sitting high-up along the third base side and staring into the shattered windows of a dead American dream, but that's downtown Detroit for you. The park itself is really well designed and there's definitely something about staring out across that massive outfield (which has to be the biggest --or close to it -- in MLB these days). Great pregame spot right across the street called Hockeytown that's a massive three-story bar with a rooftop deck.
  8. This has been a thing for a while. There are several VERY popular YouTube shows with this format and the entire Twitch platform was built for this and has been a massive success. I am not usually a huge fan of these (and some of them have been hugely problematic), but I'll be honest, I watch more than one of the McElroy Brothers' regular series on YouTube which follow this format: Car Boys, in which two guys play an insanely lifelike driving simulator in the dumbest way possible, and Monster Factory, in which they use the character design engines in any game they can get their hands on to create the weirdest individuals to ever show up on screen.
  9. I'm with Deuce; this has me intrigued. Germantown is in constant flux these days and I've never heard of this place. Can't wait to give it a try.
  10. Ate out several times during my 10 days in Michigan, but the highlight was Siren Hall in Elk Rapids. Oysters, Iceberg Wedge Salad, Steamed Mussels and Frites. Decided to go back on our second-to-last night up there. More Oysters, Caesar Salad, Clam Chowder, fried Lake Michigan Perch.
  11. I still can't think about D'Angelo Russell without thinking about those Central teams in 2012 and 2013 and how good they'd have been... especially 2013. Add Russell to a team that already went 23-6? Whew. That said, the move to Monteverde clearly worked out great for him and I hope he finds some real success in San Francisco.
  12. Camden Yards and PNC Park have been a step above everything else I've been to. I've heard that San Francisco is supposed to be great but I've never been there for a game. Fenway is also definitely on the list.
  13. I don't know exactly who the worst owner in professional sports is these days, but any list of 5 would definitely include James Dolan.
  14. They don’t play until Tuesday. I’ll agree that the schedule could be a little more even, but at four or five days’ rest that shouldn’t matter.
  15. It should be this way in every conference. I like it.
  16. I'm having some trouble staying focused. Last day at work before I leave tomorrow morning for 10 days in Northern Michigan. It's going to be 70 degrees and sunny when I arrive tomorrow. Per the forecast, the 74 degrees on Saturday is expected to be as warm as it gets. This is some serious golf weather. And good lakeside reading weather. I'm ready to go.
  17. Cardinals will play Thursday night at 8 pm against the loser of this afternoon's winners' bracket game between Vanderbilt and Mississippi State.
  18. Yeah it depends on when you were in school. The NCAA clamped down on schools really having to be within a certain Division in 1991. It wasn't made for the University of Dayton, but it feels like it was. UD won three Div. III football national championships between 1980 and 1991 (and made the championship game two other times) while having Division I basketball. In 1991, the NCAA said you couldn't do that anymore. They forced schools to fully codify their membership within certain divisions and banned "playing up" in either football or basketball.
  19. Yeah it doesn't look great. This weather is something else. There's rain in the forecast for something like 9 of the next 10 days.
  20. It's an exciting time for the school I'm sure, but the lack of a postseason during the transitional period puts a lot on those athletes. Do these folks have access to a free transfer within D-II during the transition? Are the transfer rules even the same within D-II?
  21. There are some others. I know Centenary College in Louisiana used to be a Division 1 school until very recently; now they play in Division III. I think one or two of the HBCUs have moved recently as well. By the late 1970s, most schools on the fence had already just decided that cutting football was the best way to save money and keep the rest of their sports in Division 1. And the Johns Hopkins case isn't really "grandfathering". You're permitted to be in Div. II or III and "play up" to Div. 1 in one men's sport and one women's sport (but neither can be football or basketball). Bellarmine has been using it for lacrosse. Lots of northern schools use it for ice hockey as well.
  22. I used to live about three blocks from there along Norris Ave., which is the street that runs along the backside of the campus. It's a cool place in a great part of town. Has to be tough on students trying to find non-campus housing though. Housing can be unfortunately expensive in that part of town.
