Murray and Crittenden Co played a close game with Murray coming from behind to win by ten. Mayfield put a running clock on Crittenden Co in the first half on the Rockets home field. IF Mayfield plays with the same intensity that they did last night, it will result in long faces for the Murray faithful. Mayfield wins by 3 touchdowns.

Its’s here. The yearly “catbird” fight that usually decides the class 2A first district playoff seeding. Murray is 2-0 in the district with a decisive win over Caldwell Co, and a come from behind win over Crittenden Co. Mayfield is also 2-0 with big wins over the Tigers and Rockets. This one will be played at Ty Holland in Murray so get there early if you want to sit down (don't get me started). Murray believes they are going to win this game, as they should, but what do you think?

Mayfield travels to Marion for their second district game of the season to taken on the Rockets of Crittenden County. Crittenden County is 3-4 for the season having lost their district opener at Murray. The Cardinals are 1-0 in the district getting a lopsided win over Caldwell County last week. Both teams enter District play coming off a win, Caldwell Co beating 6A Christian Co (37-6), and Mayfield beating 6A Henderson Co (14-7 2 OT). This game will be played at War Memorial in Mayfield which is not good news for the visiting Tigers. Caldwell Co is averaging 26 ppg on offense, and giving up right at 33ppg on defense. We sre not sure if he is injured or just beat into submission as the HC defenders didn't let him breathe all night. He took quite a pounding. Anthony Burrus had a great game running the ball for the Colonels. He was difficult to get to the ground. Mayfield defense held tough the entire game not allowing the hard running Burrus into the endzone but once. Conditions were horrible for both teams so I am glad to get the win. Go Big Red!

Red Helmet Sports will be live streaming the game, and we are going to fix that, Guru. You had mentioned that to me earlier and I forgot.

Henderson Co rolls into Mayfield to play the Cardinals at War Memorial Stadium this week, and the big question is will they have Davis back at quarterback for this game. He did not play against Owensboro Catholic last Friday. The run-oriented Colonels did not put up much of a fight as they lost to the Aces 28-2. They had 247 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Mayfield went on the road and defeated McCracken Co 35-21. Josiah England carried the ball for 249 yards for the Cardinals, and has proven to be a weapon on the ground. So which defense will be able to stop the run? Can either team open up a passing attack? Tell us what you think.

Great heads up, TP. Glad for Ballard Mem. to enjoy some success. As you noted, they have had some tough years as of late. One year we had to travel to their place and they barely had enough players to field a team. Hopefully that is turning around for them now.

I respectfully disagree. I see talent on our team all over the place, but several of our players are getting playing time for the first time. So they are not executing the plays, at times, like they should. But execution can be coached and learned. Some learn faster than others, and the growing pains can be costly at times as we have witnessed so far this season. I'm not quite ready to concede the title to someone else just yet, and you may be right, it may be next season before this team really blossoms.

Josiah England rushed for 246 yds averaging 9 yds a carry…great game for the young sophomore.

Mayfield goes on the road to play the Mustangs of McCracken Co this week. McCracken lost to Paducah Tilghman in the first week rather handily as the halftime score was 41-0 in favor of the Blue Tornado. This past week saw the Cardinals take on PT, and the halftime score was 14-0, again in favor of the Blue Tornado. Can any conclusions be drawn from that for this game? Tell us what you think.

The score is not indicative of how the game was played. We did a lot of growing up last night. We have some real talent, but they just need some playing time. PT is stupid good. Can they beat Boyle Co? Hopefully we will all get to find that out.

Who was the Defensive player from Mayfield that got hurt? Ian Williams. Have not heard a definite word on his injury yet.

Love the write up TP, great job! Paducah resembles a runaway train on offense, and I’m not sure we have anybody that resembles Chris Pine or Denzel Washington. PT is the favorite this year and rightly so, and it doesn’t help that we may have lost our anchor on defense to injury last night. With all of that, I’m picking the Big Red to stun the Big Blue. Mayfield wins by a touchdown. Yes, I have my rose-colored glasses on, and a jug of Cardinal Cool-Aid in my hand. ?

It is not very often that Mayfield rolls into Week 2 at 0-1, but they are this year. The Cardinals lost a thriller against an impressive Graves Co team. Can the Big Red bounce back against the Tigers? Let us know what you think.

I was impressed with The Eagles last night. And I was SUPER impressed with their QB, Gregory. He was player of the game in my book. Mayfield was right there, but way too many dropped passes and missed tackles. That has to be fixed or there might not be a playoff run this year. But I believe they will improve on that as the year goes on. Eerily similar to Coach Leahy’s debut as head coach. I believe the Eagles will be a tough out in 5A. I'm pulling for them to run the table. Go Big Red! ?

Why are you so down on Owensboro Catholic? This is simply a guess right now, and I could be completely wrong, but I'm just not sold on O Cath as being a force because Atwell returns. In my opinion, the best returning QB in 2A is Hayden. The Aces may prove me wrong, and I will celebrate them when they do.

I had a ring side seat for the playoffs last year, and we played, in this order, Murray, LCA, Beechwood, and O Cath. From the information gathered during that run on who would be returning for this season, I think you have to pick Beechwood at the number one spot. Folks they are loaded with talent this year, and I'm talking about playmakers. So this is my little opinion on the preseason rankings… 1. Beechwood 2.Mayfield 3. LCA 4. O Cath

The last time we changed coaches NOT named Morris (Jack), we stumbled out of the gate, but ended winning the 2A state championship. My point is this, we may lose some games while we figure out all the newness, but don’t be surprised if we are there in the end.

Nothing like starting the season with a fierce rival, but that's what The Cardinals and Eagles do every season. Mayfield has a winning streak going against Graves that spans a decade and a half. Will this be the year that Graves snaps the losing streak? Let us hear your opinion.

You make some very valid points. Its why I dislike the RPI system. Playing those 2A teams is a negative for the Mustangs, but a positive for the smaller schools. And you are right, it makes scheduling more difficult.
