That One Guy

Talent is key, but talented kids will go to places where more than the coaches and parents care. Coaches and parents will always be there for any program, but will their friends and neighbors be there? CovCath, NCC, Brossart, Holy Cross, Cooper and Holmes has tremendous support across the board and that enthusiasm is contagious. It's why guys like Stowers, Mitchell, Lorenzen and others came to Highlands back then. Better talent can change a program, but without administrative and neighborhood support in the stands, good players and coaches will keep leaving

I would say Highlands basketball and CovCath football are in the same boat in the sense that it doesn't feel like the whole school and community are supporting it like they used to, and that plays a significant role in high school sports. I look at it like Princeton football, which used to be a national power, but now is hiring and firing coaches faster than politicians change directions. It all starts with having the kids fully buy in, followed by the administration and followed by the community. So the question is, what does Highlands need to do to get the community to buy in?

Newport has lost 6 straight (to good teams), and Augusta wont be an easy task. Do you think Bellevue could pull off the 1st round upset? I know they handled Bellevue well back in late January, and they do have Villa before districts, but this has been a rough stretch for Newport

not forever, but both have rarely made it to the regional tournament in the last 20 years. Since 1996, Holy Cross has made it 3 times, and Beechwood twice.

Will McNeil be 100% by region? I know he'll probably be back

Other than Bezold and McNeil's injuries, what do you think are other contributors to Cooper and Holy Cross sliding away from CovCath and NewCath? Back in January, all 4 were in their own group. Even though Cooper has a very good record, it just feels like they are not on the same level as CCH and NCC right now

My guess is looking at the matchups, they must have gone with overall record as the tiebreaker

I think a HS coaches involvement depends on a few things. What age group is it? Who's running the league/program? Is that league/program designed as a direct pipeline into your program, or does it benefit multiple high schools? High school coaches should be supportive of the program. Attending games when they can, talking to but not instructing the players after the game. Talking with and getting to know the parents. Administrative, offering guidance and help when needed.

Let's say Beechwood vs. Holmes and Holy Cross vs. CovCath. Beechwood and Holy Cross win.... When was the last time Holmes and CovCath didn't make the regional tournament?

I think Mason County, Campbell County and Paris are playing their best basketball right now and I think Mason County is the best out of that bunch. Brossart matches up well with each team and has enough to pull off a deep run in the region, but they need to take care of the ball a bit better. When it's all said and done, I think Mason will be the team on top.
