I had heard from someone that Marple was actually following Dudley to Bell. I don't know how much of that is accurate, but I don't think he had been around the program since Hilton stepped down. And I know for a fact that Harrison was the interim coach, and that Marple had applied/interviewed for several open jobs in the state.

Taylor County schools made it official on their Facebook page.

If I remember correctly, he was offered the Adair job last year only to turn it down.

I guess this is a good side-story for this situation. A few years ago, I stumbled across a camp that claimed to have all of these high level guys. They were ranking guys with 4 and 5 stars at their positions, and everything like that. The whole deal was about how elite and high level these guys were. Out of their "top 75" list that they had made, I could find 2 guys who signed to play college ball anywhere. The cost for the camp? $175 for 2 days. One thing that works just as well as camp, is good game film and having a coach who has a good relationship with a nearby college.

Your best bet would be anything at the local colleges. Their coaches will be there, so that's a great exposure for them. The big national and regional travelling camps are one of two things. Either a money grab and sham, or something for the elite, high level recruits. If your child isn't elite and you aren't interested in wasting your money, stay with small colleges.

I guess to fan some of this into more of a story, and because I think this is a very interesting job to be open: What kind of coach does Taylor County need and what would it take for them to find success? The last batch of enrollment numbers I saw had Taylor as one of the smaller schools in 4A, so numbers are probably going to be an issue with them pretty consistently. They lost 3 regular season games by a combined total of 19 points, and the 7 wins were all by double digits except for 1. I'll admit I don't really know the details about the actual workings of TC, but on the surface they had a pretty good year last year. Could the new coach close that gap? We're getting close to the end of the school year, they kind of need somebody soon.

Are the players practicing with their old/current school?

It's an exciting time if you love Dudley, or Bell County, or kind of insane drama. But seriously, I'm very much interested to see how this plays out. I think it could potentially change the dynamic in both schools, as well as schools around Bell and in their district.

This is the answer I was going to have. 1A ball is a war of attrition, and this seems like a rough one.

I think the fact that Taylor was about 4 or 5 plays away from being 10-0, says a lot. I don't think anyone is going to say that Taylor is going to be a dominating force in 4A, but they have a favorable district and region. Not downgrading those teams, but until Thanksgiving weekend, there isn't a juggernaut type of team in that region. There isn't always a guaranteed "exit round" like you have when you've got Mayfield, Desales, Belfry, Central, Bowling Green, Trinity, and the likes of those guys lurking in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

I mean, ultimately, wouldn't anyone take a job that offered them significantly more money? People want to pretend like coaches are the only disloyal people in the world, yet most people would jump at a better job if it was only for better money. I don't fault anyone for taking more money, improving their situation. Throw in medical issues? Not even remotely would I look down on that. And, couldn't most people working in any field be labeled as a professional job hunter? Is it a bad thing to want to move up, even if that means moving on?

It's a much tougher road at Bell than at Taylor, plus they have a very different set of expectations. I have heard that there was an offered extended to Hilton, though.

I've expanded on my spread-sheet with some more information. I compiled a complete list of every teams win differential, which in this case I'm using simply as the difference between a teams best season and worst season over the last decade. One thing I noticed would be that there isn't an "elite" team until you get to 5 games. And I think it just goes to show that a single down year doesn't define a program or a coach, because almost every team on this list had a "down" year in some capacity. The only exception being the teams that never had a good year. I think that is probably a very true statement. And I think some of that might stem from teams who have over-achieved under a certain coach may not be as likely to be willing to entice the successful coach to stay. Whether that is money or resources or any number of things. Although, on my full spread sheet, there doesn't appear to be many multi-coach programs where there was a clear rise or clear drop off. There are a few, but not that many.

A little bit of both? I think some schools would have pretty much the same record if they had 1 coach or 10 coaches.

I did a little bit more ciphering (Jethro Clampett style) on some of the numbers I got. 1 coach: 41 teams. An average of 7.9 wins per season. 2 coaches: 51 teams. 6.8 wins per season. 3 coaches: 73 teams. 5.2 wins per season. 4 coaches: 35 teams. 4.7 wins per season. 5 coaches: 13 teams. 3.9 wins per season. 6 coaches: 6 teams. 3 wins per season. 7 coaches: 2 teams. 1.8 wins per season. 81% of teams made a coaching change in the last decade. 58% of teams made at least 2 changes in the last decade. So, logically, it's most high school kids will be playing for multiple coaches in their high school careers. And, most coaches aren't staying in the same location for long periods of time. You can take these numbers for what you wish, but I know for sure what they say to me. I like looking in depth at numbers and everything like that, and I just think it's interesting to see how things have played out over the last 10 years. Because as much as it's changed, there's still a lot that has stayed the same.

Logically, it seems that would be the only option. I mean, maybe they could name him interim or something like that. But, if you can't hire anyone at all from the outside, the only options would be to promote an assistant, have someone who isn't paid, or to shut down the program. One of those options isn't possible (shutting it down.) One of those options isn't sane (having someone who isn't paid) It feels really weird seeing FC like this.

I've spent the last few days killing some down time at work. The following is every team who competed this year, with their win totals of the last decade combined. Also their average wins per season, where their win totals rank out of 221 teams, how many coaching changes they have had over the last decade (C.C. column) and then the average wins per season rankings (AWPSR). I might have made a mistake here or there, but I'm pretty confident that these numbers are accurate. There were a few coaching situations where there was not a coach listed. There were also a few times when the coach had a different name from the previous year, although I was very confident that it was the same person (Ex: Bobby Footballcoach in 2010, Robert T. According to Wikipedia, they actually seem to have a pretty small amount of people below the federal poverty line. I wouldn't have thought that, and those numbers may be wrong, but it seems as if they are actually doing well financially.

Is that not something that had happened in the past or was it just something that they developed into later in the season compared to the start?
