  1. Good breakdown, but I would add that WanDale Robinson from Western Hills might be the best player in the state.
  2. Limitations on scrimmages haven't really changed much in the last 20 years (with the exception of Week 0)... There was never supposed to be more than 2. Maybe the perception is that the KHSAA is enforcing it more stringently? I have to say that, although some rules as far as time and things don't make sense, I think having shells once a day and full gear once a day is plenty. Also, the contact rules are common sense. With the current definitions, you can learn how to block and tackle just fine without killing each other. I think if coaches are honest and introspective, most would look back on the way things used to be done and shake their heads at the ridiculous demands they used to make on teenagers' bodies.
  3. Avoiding Belfry is good, I guess. But it might also be nice for all those teams in 3A Region 2 to avoid the Region of Death every other year? Central, Boyle, Catholic, Bardstown, Garrard, & Western Hills (who probably has the best returning athlete in 3A - maybe the state)... Pretty tough region.
  4. I am talking about coaching as teaching. I will also say that MS coaches don't just teach 12 & 13 year old kids - they coach up to 15 year olds.
  5. Don't know if the Foley rumors are true but I do know three things: 1) If you can coach middle school kids effectively, you can coach ANY level effectively. 2) Question about middle school coaches miss a major point... Unlike OCs/DCs, middle school HCs have actually run a program. They have made a practice schedule, taken care of transportation, developed a budget, supervised coaches, & dealt with administrators. The best middle school HCs run their programs much like HS programs, anyway, which leads me to my next point... 3) Foley is one of the best middle school coaches around. His teams are ALWAYS among the best in the state. The experience arguments are bunk... He has plenty of experience. I don't know if he will succeed at Taylor, but it won't be because he is not a good-enough coach, because he "ONLY" coached middle school.
  6. Hope that isn't true... Have a feeling if Berea cancels a season, football will never return, there.
  7. The military abides by the heat index... They aren't idiots, either. BTW, they also are a lot better at pushing water. Unless you have kids under your nose all the time, you cannot regulate water intake.
  8. There aren't supposed to be consecutive, fully padded practices in 2-a-days, are there? I would say do 1 morning practice with a focus on indy period and maybe special teams install, then an evening focus on team stuff.
  9. I agree with a lot of this... Not sure about 10 on 11, though. Most run plays leave at least 2 defenders out of the play entirely.
  10. All true statements, with one caveat. Garrard's throwing game needs to be play-action oriented. They don't often have enough athletes to be a spread-type team. The 2014 could have (especially in that district), and maybe 2015 (thought they wouldn't have had any depth at those skill positions. Last year and this upcoming season, however, that is doubtful.
  11. If they could have gotten 2 or 3 stops a game last season, they would have won at least 2 more games, and would have had a puncher's chance in the trifecta vs. Boyle, Catholic, & Central. BTW, they scored more points against Central than any other team in the playoffs not named Belfry. All three of the other teams Central played were in spread formations.
  12. Offense was not the issue with Garrard last year. They averaged 335 YPG last season. Against the three best teams on their schedule (Boyle, LexCath, & Central) they averaged exactly 335, as well.
  13. I have no idea why Highlands does, or does not, use a TE... I can tell you that TEs who are good blockers, good receivers, and good athletes ARE increasingly rare. A lot of those guys are focusing on basketball, now, maybe???
  14. So, all of you decrying FCPS "giving in" would be okay with the boys teams being called the "Fillies" or the "Mares"??? I don't see a problem with a new school actually wanting to have a mascot they feel can represent more of the student body. The Freedom or Liberty are an interesting choice, though it might not go with the color scheme - and it sounds a little like an MLS team. Maybe the Travelers - to represent Douglass's flight to freedom? Of course, the Demons has the advantage of being unique, sounding awesome, and being historically appropriate. None of those are horse themes, though.
  15. That is a good drill... Just reinforces my belief that you don't have to beat and bang to teach good tackling.
  16. One of the issues with staffing is this: National Certifications through BFS or NHSSCA do not count as a teaching certificate and will not suffice for LEAD Reporting for the state. Therefore, any S&C guy for in-school lifting must also be PE certified. Technically, a football coach from another content area should not be able to teach a weightlifting class.
  17. I will never understand this mentality. There are a lot of ways in which a middle school coach has something to offer beyond what a HS assistant would. I don't know anything about this guy, but there is no reason a middle school coach can't be the right guy.
  18. This could be a "domino" job, that starts a lot of reshuffling... Sort of like Boyle a few years back.
  19. It would be nice, but impossible, if the KyGenAssembly mandated the Fall break window, and KHSAA mandated the bye for ALL schools that week.
  20. He is a great player. Kind of reminds you of Timmons, when he was at Franklin County. No problem, at all, with him as the 3A PoY.
  21. Okay - I posted a thread about Thanksgiving practices... How about State Championship week? How have schools that play (or have played) in the State games addressed their preparation and managed time on game day?
  22. Every year, my favorite thread is the one where people talk about their Thanksgiving practice routines... What does your team do, or what have they done in the past?
  23. In HS rules, there is no difference between a FG and a punt, after it is kicked. Same rules apply.
  24. The only way to legislate this would be for the state legislature to mandate the dates for fall break and the KHSAA to tab a statewide open week. Otherwise, coaches just have to do the best they can communicating with parents. Should really only be a problem with incoming freshmen, as other parents should know the drill. For a coach, there is also a difference if you are approached months in advance, rather than the weekend before or not at all.
