I'm sure Trinity has an outstanding O-line, but... Breaking tackles - that's all Dawkins. Faking defensive players out of their cleats - that's all Dawkins. Outrunning players that appear to have the angle on him - that's all Dawkins. Amazing player and I can't wait to see him live at HHS this August.

The website is not showing the 2012 dates, but in 2011 it was during the first two weeks of the (KY) season - actually one game in week 1 and then games Thursday thru Sunday of week 2. If they do that again this year, HHS has games scheduled for those two weeks with a bye in week 3. Thing is, Dixie is available week two because they dropped Highlands and then Highlands picked up Scott County.

Dale has never struck me as one who would play the Sr. just because he's a Sr. As he said, "No starting position is guaranteed at this time. They have to be the best to play." I think he'll do what's best for the team, and that will become apparent in Spring practice.

Oh, and it also sounds like the door has been left open a crack for Houliston to be the starting QB. If he (Houliston) can handle it and McCoy and his athleticism can be used elsewhere, I think it makes the team better.

Dale is so slippery. Every time he's asked to specifically compare A and B he refuses to give a definitive answer. I think this is due to his refusal to say anything negative about anybody. Not meant as a negative or to bash Dale (I think he's awesome!), but it's got to be frustrating for a reporter trying to get a straight answer!

What about pumping the fist or chest-thumping as he's running down the field? What about high-stepping? And none of these directed at the opposing players. The point is where do you draw the line? The refs have to be told something, otherwise you get inconsistent application of a penalty that could cost a team points, maybe the game. If I put myself in the role of the rule maker, I have to think of a rule and it's application. What's the easiest, most fair and easiest to apply standard? In this case I think it's zero tolerance for celebrations. It's not that I'm personally against celebrations, or shows of emotion, it's just that if it's not tightly regulated it can get out of hand. Fact is, I think refs are using good judgment overall on Friday nights. You have to remember that we are discussing/debating an exception, not the norm. It's not like refs are going flag crazy calling these penalties. All is well! All is well!

I disagree. I think any premature celebration that happens before the player reaches the end zone could be construed as taunting. The player is basically saying, "I beat them so bad I can start celebrating before the play is even over!" I've always interpreted any premature celebration as an "in your face" taunt.

I saw an article toward the end of the season where PT said he wasn't playing in any all-star games - he wanted to get on with basketball season.

In football emotions run hotter, they're wearing protective gear and there's an opportunity very soon after the celebration to use physical violence (which is part of the game) to extract whatever vengeance a player wants. Celebrations must be looked at and treated differently in football, otherwise someone could get seriously injured due to a cheap shot.

I didn't want to appear to be "piling on" considering the issues he had at the end of the season (that's why I didn't start a thread about it), but this very thought crossed my mind too... Also, did the ceremony take place at the high school he no longer attends? Was the now-retired coach there? I'm not asking these things to take a shot, just wondering, 'cause I'll bet it was a pretty awkward environment.

The problem with this approach is that it would go against the way all other penalties are enforced. If a holding penalty happens during a play (even a TD), the play is penalized - no TD and -10 yards. If something happens after a TD, it's a dead ball foul and is assessed on the extra point or the kickoff. IMO, to be completely consistent, if the celebration begins before the TD (crossing the goal line) the TD should be taken away and yardage penalty enforced. If it happens after the TD, then assess it on the XP or kickoff. If it is not enforced this way, what do you do if the kid starts celebrating prematurely and then is tackled at the one yard line? I think enforcement should be based on when/where the penalty happens, just like all other penalties.

I think it's easier, more practical, and better to eliminate it completely. Otherwise it's left up to the judgment of the ref as to what crosses the line. Which means a kid could score a TD, thump his chest and get no penalty. The next week he scores on the last play of the game to win it, thumps his chest and a different ref flags him and they lose the game. He thought the chest thump was okay because he did it the previous week, but when there's room for interpretation it can cause lots of trouble, IMO.

I would say in a very strict interpretation of the rule, yes. But again, it's a judgment call. I wouldn't call it if I were the ref, but that's my judgment.

It's obviously subjective - purely a judgment call for the ref. I'm pretty sure Seidl did exactly what the Boston kid did on his second runback vs. LexCath, but no flag was thrown.

What if there were a coach who coached the smallest school in their class. And his O and D linemen were outsized almost every game. And he coached at a public school. And early in the playoffs he loses his 1,000 yard receiver. With all that working against him, he still wins the state championship. Would he be worthy of mention in COY? I'm just kidding, kinda...
