A friend and I were watching an MLB game a couple years ago when this play happened. Ball was foul tipped off the catcher's mitt and he pinned it under his arm against his body. The ump did not give him an out. I talked to my buddy this morning and he thinks that the ball tipped the mitt and got lodged between the catcher's chest protector and his jersey and that's why he didn't get the out. I don't have an official rule book. If someone on here has one please look up the rule on foul tips. I'm a stickler for knowing the rules and I want to know which is the correct ruling. Thanks.

I've never seen it called an out off the catcher's mitt unless the ball is tipped up in the air above the catcher. Thinking back on it I believe I saw a ball deflect off the mitt then the mask and pop up in the air and then caught. I think the batter was called out. So now I'm doubting what I posted before.

You guys are getting confused. The rule on live ball foul tip is similar to the rule on foul tips on 3rd strikes. If batter has 2 strikes and foul tips the ball directly into the catcher's mitt it's strike 3 and he's out. It's a live ball if that is not the 3rd out of the inning. If the batter fouls it and it hits the catcher's mitt then mask then arm and he catches it before it hits the ground, it's not strike 3. And it's not a live ball on which you can steal.

That's correct. If the ball is foul tipped directly into the catcher's mitt it's a live ball.

Hellbird, you're right it was a great game. Well, it was a great 7th inning really. And I'll strongly disagree about the plate umpire. I was behind the plate the entire game and when Dunn is trying to throw the back door curveball to lefties, Fussinger set up on the corner then had to reach and pull the pitches 4-5 inches to the corner. If I can see it I know the PU can see it. It happened to both catchers as Conner's pitcher was trying the corners and missing as well. So anyone who complains about it for either side is, very simply, wrong. Neither pitcher was sharp today. Both struggled with fastball command the entire game. It was a tight but consistent strike zone (except for one stretch bottom 4 to top 5) where some high pitches were called strikes. As I said before, the catchers were trying to pull pitches for strikes but the PU was having none of it. The PU missed two check swings (one each team) which were obviously poor calls but he was excellent on the strike zone. The most consistent I've seen in a long time. The last time I saw Dunn was at CovCath and he didn't look too good that day. This is the third time I've seen Ostertag and he was not as sharp as I've seen him in the past. Both pitchers turned to their breaking pitches a lot and I want to give Dunn a lot of credit, his defense put him in a big hole and after over-throwing his fastball for a couple innings, he finally started throwing a hard breaking ball which he was able to throw in the strike zone. He kept his team in the game by fighting through the 2nd-6th innings allowing no more runs and I was really impressed. Ostertag also threw more breaking pitches as the game went on but was a bit less consistent than Dunn was through the middle innings. Top 7 Cooper got a couple walks then Dunn smoked a double to tie the game at 4. A couple batters later Lawhorn singled to center for 2 more runs. After a balk gave Cooper yet another run, they went to the bottom of the 7th up 7-4 looking to finish off a great comeback. Bottom 7 for Conner, Ross got a 1 out double down the left field line. With 2 out, Williams lined one to center to plate Ross. Then Hart homered to right to tie it up. The momentum was with Conner at that point and after a single and double, Conner got a ground ball single down the 3rd base line for the walk off win. Good game by both teams.

I understand Malibu no offense taken. I like both teams and barring injuries, expect both to have a great season. Regarding BW's choice of pitchers, they had a couple All A games this week and smartly saved their stud pitchers for those games which certainly mean more than the Reds Showcase game with Conner.

You may be off an inning. The top of BW's lineup batted 3 times (meaning Stringer, Suchanek, Combs, Slusher). I'm pretty sure they all batted in the top of the 5th.

It was both. Lots of walks compounded by some errors.

Typical ugly early season game. Huge strike zone and yet there were tons of deep counts and walks. The pitching on both sides struggled with the gusting winds and perhaps a bit of nerves. The teams only played 6 innings due to darkness. 6 innings in 2 hours 52 minutes. Awful pace. A bases loaded walk bottom 6 gave Conner the win.

I believe Ross had a couple singles and scored twice. Williams 2 doubles and the sac fly. Ward had a nice oppo homer in the 1st...first varsity at bat I was told.

Do you want noise canceling headphones? I used to have a pair of Sonys that were really nice. I'm sure the Bose noise canceling are good as well. What is important to you? Comfort? Sound quality? Price? I've tried more than a dozen sets of cans and I settled on the Audio Technica set that Habib mentioned early in this thread. If your primary goal is clarity (which is most important to me) then these are the best and they're $150. The sound quality is amazing. The Beats sound awful to me, but it's probably because I'm used to the ATs. Best of luck..

Trey has always been a good line drive hitter. Used to go the other way a lot but now is dangerous pole to pole.

From the game last night....I've never seen an umpire in the B slot step right into a throw from shortstop. The throw would have missed him and rather than ducking or just standing still, he stepped right into it and got drilled. Never seen that before.

Similar in that they were both bad calls. I can't say for sure but it might have been the same ump.

Certainly Conner was reeling a bit coming into this game but the difference tonight was Trey Ganns. He pitched a really nice game. Mixed it up and Conner couldn't lay off the high cheese. Nice job Trey. Good luck in the regionals.

This is the opposite of what I've always seen enforced. My understanding has always been that the first baseman has right of way no matter where the runner is. The defender must avoid contact even if the first baseman jumps in his way at the last moment. Again, this is just the way I've always seen it enforced. Accidentally running into the first baseman would be interference on the runner. Malicious contact would warrant ejection.

I wouldn't read too much into this. Ryle threw several different pitchers to stay sharp for Districts and really not much to play for in this game.

Yeah, it was on the way home if home plate was in the St. Henry on deck circle cause that's where it hit the fence. Right in front of where I was standing.

Conner's future opponents can thank St. Henry's catcher for putting Jared Williams out of the lineup. On the double by Hermann top 7 Williams scored from 1st base and for some reason SH's catcher dropped down to block the plate when the ball was nowhere near him. Williams tried to slide through him to get to the plate and injured his leg which I'm told swelled up after the game. He's out indefinitely and with Logan Henry breaking his ankle Conner's middle infield situation just took a big dive heading right into districts.

Totally agree with this. If I were Cooper I'd throw Lawhorn against Ryle. Cooper would still have to manufacture 3-4 runs even if Lawhorn is on though.

I heard Maines took himself out of the game in the 4th inning, packed up his gear and left the field. Can anyone confirm this? Did he quit?

Anyone know why Ganns didn't start for Boone? Surprising to me that they didn't use him. But then again, they didn't use Ganns in the district tournament game vs. Conner last year either. ??
