  1. Here are my thoughts on the top 10 teams in the eighth along with my top 10 player rankings. I am ranking Anderson County first only because they have the 2 best players in the region, IMO. But I would not be suprised if Walton goes to Diddle a third straight time. Some might say I have South too high(#4), but having watched the four returning seniors for years, I am pretty confident that they will surprise a lot of people. The regional champ will most likely be between WV and AC. Teams---------------------Players 1. Anderson County ----------1. Eriel McKee--AC 2. Walton Verona ------------2. MacKenzie Cann--AC 3. 2. Marion County’s Makayla Epps commits to UK women Posted on August 27, 2012 by Steve Jones Marion County High School all-state point guard Makayla Epps, regarded as one of the nation’s best 2013 basketball prospects, committed to the University of Kentucky women’s team on Monday during an unofficial visit to the school, her high school and AAU coaches confirmed. She had been committed to the University of Louisville until reopening her recruitment last week. She was accompanied on the visit by her father, Anthony, a former point guard for the Wildcats, and received a scholarship offer from UK only on Monday, said David Tapley, who coached Epps on the Kentucky Premier club. Marion County coach Trent Milby also confirmed the decision. Epps, a 5-foot-11 point guard, is the second commitment in a week from a Marion County star who had formerly been a U of L pledge. Forward Kyvin Goodin-Rogers committed to UK coach Matthew Mitchell during an unofficial visit to Lexington last Tuesday. Epps is ranked as the nation’s No. 15 prospect and the top point guard by the All-Star Girls Report. She is the nation’s No. 37 senior, according to ESPN.com’s HoopGurlz rankings. Epps, a top candidate for Miss Basketball this season, is capable of playing point guard, shooting guard or small forward, Tapley said, but excels as a primary ball-handler. Epps averaged 17.3 points, 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game for the state runners-up last season. Marion County’s Makayla Epps commits to UK women | Recruiting
  3. That suprises me. I wonder if Epps will commit, too. Marion Co.’s Goodin-Rogers commits to UK women Posted on August 21, 2012 by Steve Jones By Steve Jones, The Courier-Journal Marion County High School’s Kyvin Goodin-Rogers, an all-state girls’ basketball player who was formerly committed to the University of Louisville, made a new commitment to the University of Kentucky on Tuesday during an unofficial visit to the school, her coach said. Goodin-Rogers, a 6-foot-1 forward who’s ranked as a top-75 prospect nationally, committed to UK coach Matthew Mitchell after meeting with him in Lexington, Marion County coach Trent Milby said. Goodin-Rogers, whose father is former Louisville player Tick Rogers, committed to U of L after her sophomore year but withdrew that pledge in early June, Milby said. She then chose the Wildcats primarily over Middle Tennessee State and Ohio State, according to the coach. Milby said Goodin-Rogers, who averaged 13.4 points and 9.1 rebounds last season for the state runner-up, likes Kentucky’s style of play and educational opportunities. He said she is a combination small forward/power forward who can play in the post or score from long range. Goodin-Rogers was the first of two Marion County seniors to withdraw commitments to Louisville this summer. The other, guard Makayla Epps, who backed out of her commitment last month, is now considering the Cardinals and UK, where her father, Anthony, played. Milby said Makayla Epps – also a nationally ranked prospect – plans to unofficially visit UK on Monday. Marion Co.’s Goodin-Rogers commits to UK women | Recruiting
  4. Congrats to a really talented player! 2012 High School Girls' Basketball Recruits - Middle Tennessee - ESPNHS China Dow, GLouisville, KYAug 3, 2012Christian Academy Of Louisville (KY) Scouts Grade: 88Position Rank (G): 663-star G China Dow picks the Sun Belt. China Dow of Louisville, Ky., has verbally committed to Middle Tennessee, according to club team coach, David Tapley of Kentucky Premier. The 5-foot-9 guard also considered Indiana, Nebraska and Xavier before picking the Blue Raiders. "China has had a breakout summer for Kentucky Premier," Tapley said in an email. "(She's) a great defender and always gives 100-percent. She will fit great with coach (Rick) Insell?s style, especially how he has been able to develop scoring guards and China is certainly a scoring guard who can play multiple positions. I think coach Insell has pulled off one of the biggest gets of his career with China Dow." Dow, who is rated a three-star prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz, is the third player to commit to the Blue Raiders in the class. She joins Tyisha Petty of Murfreesboro, Tenn., a 5-6 point guard, and Olivia Jones, a 5-8 guard who also is from Murfreesboro.
  5. Rebecca Greenwell lifts FlightNo. 6 player in Super 60 scores 25 points to lead team to Nike Nationals crownUpdated: July 31, 2012, 4:46 PM ETBy Chris Hansen | HoopGurlz Recommend5Tweet28Comments0EmailPrint Glenn Nelson/ESPNHS Rebecca Greenwell of Owensboro, Ky., capped off her club basketball career with her third Nike Nationals crown.NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- It took Rebecca Greenwell a few seconds to decide which of her three Nike Nationals crowns she likes best. But it took no time at all for the 6-foot-1 wing from Owensboro, Ky., to make her intentions of winning that third championship with the Tennessee Flight known. "I think this one (is better) because I'm going to be a senior and this is my last game," said Greenwell, the No. 6 player in the Super 60 for the 2013 class. "It feels good to go out on top. It feels pretty awesome." With her Flight team down 17-14 to Boo Williams after trailing for the opening eight minutes of the game, Greenwell played up to her five-star rating, scoring the final 17 Flight points of the half. That burst of buckets included a 7-0 run that put the Flight up 26-22, a lead they never gave up en route to a 68-61 win. "Once I don't miss for a while I kind of feel like I will make everything I shoot," Greenwell said. "So this is just kind of one of those games." Greenwell scored a game-high 25 points, but she was far from the only star on the floor in a Flight uniform. Rising junior Alexa Middleton of Murfreesboro, Tenn., ran the point against intense pressure from the Boo Williams defense and scored 12 points, including four critical free throws in the final minute of the game. "I just knew I had to be more of a leader," Middleton said. A big part of that necessity was an ankle injury to teammate Tyisha Petty three weeks ago. Petty was in a protective boot and didn't play the entire tournament until coach Tom Insell inserted her into the game with 8.8 seconds to play and the outcome decided. Teammate Olivia Jones grabbed a rebound and gave her the ball to hold for the final buzzer, and Petty tossed the ball 20 feet into the air to celebrate. When Boo Williams jumped out to an early lead, it was the No. 2 player in the 2013 class, Kaela Davis of Buford, Ga., who scored five of the Flight's first six points to keep game within reach until the shooters got going. And then there is the team's unsung star, Nina Davis of Memphis, Tenn. The 6-1 forward had the chore of guarding 6-3 Jatarie White. With the Boo defense focusing on the big guns, White worked the glass and ran the baseline and finished with 14 points. But all that said, the afternoon was Greenwell's again, just as it was back in April when she won the Most Valuable Player honor at the Boo Williams Spring Invitational -- her first event back after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament. She was a member of all three Tennessee Flight teams that have won Nike Nationals, first in 2008 as seventh-grader, in 2010 as a sophomore where she was chosen the MVP, and, fittingly, once more as a senior. "I told Nike last night, if we win tomorrow, Rebecca Greenwell has to be the most celebrated player ever to play Nike basketball, hands down," Insell said. "There might be other great players that play Nike, but to do what she's done is unbelievable." So the sun sets on another summer circuit of travel basketball, and 2012 will go down as the year of Flight School. The U17 team won both Boo Williams and Nike Nationals, and the program's U15 team won the Nike Junior championship with a 62-54 win over Boo Williams U15. 8. Rankings: Kentucky girls Class of 2014 | Jody Demling – Recruiting Posted on June 26, 2012 by Jody Demling Sandwiched between a really good Class of 2013 and a sensational Class of 2015 in the state of Kentucky, the ’14 class sometimes looks weaker. But there are some solid players in the ’14 class, which will be juniors this season. I think the problem with the class and its reputation as far as prospects goes is that it’s just not as deep as we are used to in the Bluegrass. With that said, he’s an attempt at ranking the class. • 1. Ivy Brown, LaRue County, 6-0, F – No question she’s the best of the bunch. Brown has improved and recently Stanford jumped into her recruitment. • 2. Kayla Rankin, Perry County Central, 6-0, F – Really had a sensational year for Perry Central; likely to go down as one of the school’s all-time leading scorers. • 3. MacKenzie Cann, Anderson County, 5-11, F – Solid and steady. • 4. Danielle Lawrence, Butler, 5-9, F – Has never really gotten the hype with other top players on the roster; but she’s really good. • 5. Shalika Smith, Glasgow, 6-1, F – Loved her game at Sweet 16; averaged almost a double-double last season. • 6. Javonna Layfield, Ballard, 5-11, G • 7. Brooke Todd, Paul Dunbar, 6-0, F • 8. Nicole Kiernan, Newport Central Catholic, 5-10, F • 9. Eriel McKee, Anderson County, 5-10, F • 10. Raven Merriweather, Sacred Heart, 5-7. G • 11. Tereka Guyn, Scott County, 5-11, F • 12. Alexus Calhoun, Marion County, 6-0, F • 13. Jamie Castle, Magoffin County, 5-5, G • 14. Daijia Ruffin, Sacred Heart, 5-10, F • 15. Emily Fryman, Bullitt East, 5-5, G ((NOTE: There are some prospects that could be making a transfer of schools that is not included in these rankings.)) 9. Congrats to Moss!! She will have a great bball career at Florida!
  10. I thought Emily Fox would make this cut, but looks like a very good team. I think #1-5 are on the same AAU team, so should be good chemistry. 11. I agree WV Frank. I think the girls played really good pressure defense and that was the big key to their success. And from my observation they truly liked each other which made for good team chemistry also helped that Sydney is such a team player! When Indiana's Junior Allstar team was introduced, I thought OMG are these girls really in high school. They are tall and big. I think I saw 6 or 7 girls over 6ft. Would like to see the KY/IN junior all-star game but will be getting my daughter settled at school as she has to report on campus this week, but it should be a really competitive game as we have really good juniors, too.

  13. Seniors take apart juniors in Kentucky All-Stars basketball games Girls warming up for Indiana game 3:00 AM, Jun 7, 2012 | Comments 2 of 10Scott Utterback/The Courier-Jour Written by Michael Grant Kentucky All-Stars girls coach Stacy Pendleton wanted a test and got one — for a half. The All-Stars dominated the second half to defeat the juniors 106-77 at Trinity High School on Wednesday night after romping by 30 over a team with some of the same players Tuesday in Lexington. This time the juniors led 42-33 before the seniors rallied for a 51-46 halftime edge, then blew it open in the second half. Pendleton, the Manual High coach, is preparing his team to meet Indiana in the annual two-game series starting Friday in Freedom Hall. “Last night down there in Lexington we beat them pretty good,” he said. “... We missed a lot of shots (tonight) and should have been up more. I think the kids that they added gave them some more bulk, size to rebound with us. This group probably will mirror what Indiana will bring on Friday.” Miss Basketball Sydney Moss led all scorers with 20 points, 13 in the second half. “Sydney is a great representative for Miss Basketball,” Pendleton said of the Florida signee from Boone County. “She’s really selfless and plays so hard. She’s a team player. She’s almost a team player to a fault. Tonight I thought she was very assertive. She’s a humble kid, and she can flat play.” “We play real good as a team,” Moss said. “Knowing each other and how we play kind of helps.” Jasmine Whitfield of South Oldham added 16 points, including a 3-pointer for the halftime margin. The juniors got 17 points from Becca Greenwell of Owensboro Catholic. http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20120606/SPORTS05/306060127/1031/sports/kentucky-basketball-all-stars?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Sports|s
  14. Moss was by far the best player on the floor, junior or senior. I told my husband I almost forgot how athletic she is, now I am not so worried about the length of Indiana.
  15. My daughter told me tonight that Christy Higdon got the job. Good decision! She will do well!
  16. The Seniors won by 30 points. I thought it would be a lot closer.
  17. Indiana allstars lost to their juniors last night. I hope the Kentucky seniors can win tonight, we also have a srong junior class. Indiana All-Stars exhibitions: Junior girls keep control; senior boys win | Indianapolis Star | indystar.com
  18. Indiana is tall. Will be interesting to see the stratagy when there is no one over 5'11 for Kentucky, but Coach Pendleton is very good. 19. Congrats to her. Only seen her play once against South. Although South won, I came away very impressed with her, she is a baller!!
  20. South will have a good team next year. I think they will be better than most people expect. I think the incoming seniors will step it up. Seniors Corine Stanford, Kenzie Beaudrie, Kayla Mullins, and Samantha Taylor are all good solid players that had the unfortunate task of playing behind the class of 2012, I think they will suprise people. I think the biggest plus for South will be junior to be Emma Sedoris. I talked to her Mom last week and she said Emma was having a good AAU summer so far. She is tall and strong, if South can establish an inside game with her , I think they will have a very good team. There are also several other good juniors(Schumm & Platt) and sophomores that will contribute. The first step will be hiring a coach. IMO the obvious choice is Christy Higdon, the JV coach. I don't know why they are delaying the decision.
  21. Congrats to Mykal!! She is so fast. Georgetown is getting a really good player!!
  22. The girls’ six core players are Marion County’s Makayla Epps and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers - both Louisville commitments – Owensboro Catholic’s Becca Greenwell, Christian Academy’s China Dow, Madison Central’s Larryn Brooks and Ashton Feldhaus.
