  1. South Oldham Lady Dragons had two players sign today: Jasmine Whitfield - Cincinnatti Mary Dye - Bellarmine University So glad for both girls! They get it done on the court and in the classroom. Coach Wright has done such a good job with making these girls better players. It was such a great time today with teammates, family, middle school coaches, AAU coaches, etc. Congrats to Mary and Jasmine!!
  2. Congrats to Sydney and her family!! She will do very well at the next level. Awesome athelete. My husband thinks she can dunk and just doesn't know it yet. She can elevate. Glad she is not in the 8th region, lol!! If she stays healthy, she should be the next Miss Kentucky Basketball.
  3. Congrats to Sydney!! Met and talked to her Grandmother several times. Very nice Family. Jax State is getting a very good player!!
  4. I don't think I agree that Gayheart is better now. Statistically Whitfield was better that Gayheart in ppg, shooting %(2pt and 3pt) and rebounding. As I do not have all Gayheart stats it would be hard to compare but I would bet they are very similar. Physically Whitfield is taller 5"11 with a 6'2 reach. What I will say is that we have 2 very good players, but they are very different type of players IMO, so it is very hard to compare them. Whitfield is a more athletic player using a lot of her physical attributes and Gayheart is a more finesse player using more skills. So depending on what type of basketball you like to watch, your opinion will be different than another person's opinion. I think it is great that the eighth region has girls that will be playing at the next level, Gayheart(NKU), Whitfield(Cincinnatti), and Dye(Bellarmine). I am hoping that Brown(Anderson), Bryant(North Oldham), Taulbee and Slavey(Walton), and Devine(Carroll Cty) will also be playing at the next level. Does anyone have any recruiting info on these girls? The 8th has a lot of talent. I am a big fan of Women's Basketball, so I am pulling for all the girls in Kentucky, especially the 8th region!!
  5. By Mickey Patterson Teams 1. Anderson County 2. South Oldham 3. Walton Verona 4. Collins 5. Owen County 6. Simon Kenton 7. Oldham County 8. Gallatin County 9. North Oldham 10. Carroll County Players 1. Rianna Gayheart - Owen County 2. Jasmine Whitfield - South Oldham 3. Hannah Devine - Carroll County 4. Aaliyah Wells - Collins 5. Mackenzie Cann - Anderson County 6. 6. South will need more consistant offense from players other that Whitfield and Dye. South will most likely be starting 5 seniors. I expect Maddie Wright to join the 4 remaining starters. Although, Whitfield was South's best 3-point shooter last year, I personally thing Wright has the ability to be the best 3-point shooter. Getting her to shoot this year will probably give South 3 very good players for offense. The other two starters, Gamsky and Housley(both very strong defenders) will also give some needed offense. I think South is also losing Mikala Pfeifer to another sport, she was a very good physical player in the post. If sophomore Emma Sedoris can step up in the post, South will be very, very good. I was also very impressed this summer with juniors Mackenzie Beaudrie and Corrine Sanford. I think they both will play good minutes off the bench. South will have 8 Seniors on varsity with most having played three years on varsity. As always, I think Coach Wright will have this team ready to compete for the region, but it will be up to the players on how far they will go.
  7. South Oldham's Jasmine Whitfield verbally committed to University of Cincinnati today. Congrats Jasmine!!
  8. Local star star narrows college list Posted on August 29, 2011 by Jody Demling One of the top high school senior girls’ basketball players in the Louisville-area has narrowed her list of schools to five. South Oldham High School guards Jasmine Whitfield will make visits to all five of her finalists - Western Kentucky, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky and Mississippi - before making a final decision on what school she will attend. The 5-foot-11 Whitfield averaged 20.9 points a game last season and also led the Lady Dragons in steals (4.3) and assists (2.4). She hit 56.2 percent from the field, including 34.3 percent from three-point range. Whitfield also averaged 7.3 rebounds a game.
  9. I agree. Very, very, good point guard. She makes amazing passes and is very quick. I heard she committed to Morehead. She will do very well at the next level.
  10. I don't know a lot about this team, but I did see two players this summer. Octavia Wilson is a great shooter, has very good form and is a lefty. She also plays great defense. I was also impressed with Alex Boykin. She is very tall and lanky and is a lot stronger than she appears. Very, very , smart player. Knows where to be and makes some shots that make you say "how did she make that basket?". So, they have a great start with Boykin and Wilson.
  11. I agree! I had to send him an email last season to list the "all 8th region" team in the CJ after he had a big write up on the 6th and 7th region teams. He tried to blame the 8th region coaches in his reply to me. When he printed the list, you needed a magnifying glass to read it, lol! Anyway, Jasmine has offers from Western Kentucky, Mississippi State, EKU, Austin Peay, University of Delaware & Jacksonville State University. University of Cinncinnatti, DePaul and UMass want her to come for a visit in the next couple of weeks. She will probably visit UC and Depaul, UMass is too far(In my opinion). She will probably commit by September and then early sign.
  12. Congrats to South Oldham's Jasmine Whitfield named MVP of the 14th annual Battle of the Bridges played in Louisville Saturday night. The game featured Louisville area High School girls against Southern Indiana High School girls. The Louisville team lead by 20+ points most of the game. Very fast and great defensive team with very good play from Whitfield, April Wilson, Leasia Wright, Kara Wright, Laurine Bodine, Darius Franklin. I did not know some of the girls but I can honestly say they all played well. Indiana had a height advantage, but Louisville's quickness took away that advantage. The team was coached by Zena Heckstall. The boys game was great! The Louisville team was behind most of the game but the made a great comeback in the fourth quarter
  13. Coach Fothergill had that team playing some great defense!!
  14. Yes, Fothergill's team has some very good talent, also. MacKenzie Martinez-Butler Jasmine Whitfield-South Oldham Laurine Bodine - Manual Ivy Brown -Larue County Octavia Wilson - Lexington Catholic Alex Botkin - Lexington County Megan Pittman - Cassey County Oney Harrison - Tates Creek Brittani Gay -GRC Emily Fox - Lincoln County Both teams won their brackets in Bloomington and would have played each other for the championship. Good wins for both teams!!
  15. The girls play at 6:00 tonight the boys play at 8:00 at Bellarmine. Don't know a lot of details, I do know Mary Dye from South Oldham is playing for the eighth not sure who else. I know some girls are playing in exposure events this weekend with their AAU teams and couldn't play.
  16. South Oldham's varsity team has won all their summer games, so far. They have beat Butler, Male, Floyd Central, Sacred Heart, Owen County, and Western Hills. I like how the seniors are looking and I especially like how several of the juniors have improved. But it is summer ball and a lot of coaches(including South) are playing a lot of kids and sometimes key players are on vacation or have other committments.

  18. I was told some of the players for the scrimmage at Eastern on the 7th, but could only remember a few. I am getting old. Jasmine Whitfield-South Oldham, Mackenzie Martinez-Butler, Andera Owens- Male, Sydney Moss-Boone County. There is suppose to be 15.
  19. I did not keep the newspaper, but the article in the Oldham Era basically said she wanted to do something different. She was also a track star in high school and might work with NOHS track team next year. I took from the article that it was her choice to step down.
  20. Correction. The ten best players the coaches have "seen" this season. The article said they received 95% of the votes before the sweet 16.
  21. The Courier Journal doesn't picks the players. They have the coaches list the ten best players they have played against, so the coaches failed her. She is a good player.

  23. Congrats to 8th region Honorable Mention players Rianna Gayheart and Jasmine Whitfield!! 2 very talented Juniors.
