The teams that have their boy's basketball make the State Tournament will have the luxury of practicing some, or all AFTER Spring Break as their "clocks" won't start until March 23rd. With Spring Break, here in Jeff. Co. from March 30/April 3, teams could still get in their ten days AFTER Spring Break. That happened to us at Manual in 2000 when the girls BB went to the Sweet 16. A BIG advantage weatherwise practicing the 2nd and 3rd weeks of April instead of the 2nd and 3rd weeks of March.

Louisville Western (#98 on this thread) is switching to white helmets/black face masks. The Warrior logo is the same, except it is now kelly green with black trim.

I suppose it's better than nothing, but I would like to see a uniform set of dates for all schools. It's just not fair for one teams "clock" to start on March 2nd (the Monday after the district tournament), while another team could start as late as April 6th.

After talking with one of the assistants last week, They could very well be just as good (if not a little better) than last year. Losing Cobble and Wilson is quality for sure, but they didn't lose the quanity they did in 07. There will be several three-year starters taking the field for the Jackets this fall, most of which have two rings. Central had 13 seniors, but have 17 returning juniors, including Tim Patterson, who I think might the best player Central has had over thier two year championship run. One of the better WR's in the area in Stephan Robinson. And a two-headed monster at QB - Diaz Bolden and Chris King, two of the fastest players you will see in the Metro (I have to think the one that doesn't start at QB will start at RB). They also pulled some of the best freshmen in the city, some of which would have in the past ended up at Male, Manual or one of the green teams. The key to the whole thing is that Coach Scroggins & staff have been able to DISCIPLINE these last two teams. I thought Central's 2004 and 2006 teams were more a little more talented than the 07 or 08 championship teams, but didn't have that intangible of discipline.

Louisville Western DB Leon Melvin. AP honorable mention all-state. Had 9 picks in 2008. 3 in our win over Central, 3 others returned for TD's. Averaged 9+ yards/carry and 18 yards/reception in limited offensive play. Also returned 2 punts for TD's.

And as long as the players stay hungry for another title, they probably will. They lost more talent after the title in 07 and still won again in 08.

Like the insurance, it's something the KHSAA says is manditory. I think it's been $5 the past several years.

This was his 2nd season. He was 2-9 last year, 0-10 this season.

I spoke to a Waggener assistant last night. He told me Head Coach Wade Williams has resigned. No confirmation in the C-J yet though.

At Louisville Western we have a very good, sports-minded new principal (a former AD), but we are one of the “have-nots” when it comes to dollars available for sports. The school does help with the necessities like helmets and shoulder pads, although 90% of what we have now looks to be 3-5 years old, or more and will have to be replaced sooner than later. Things like uniforms and “spirit packs” have to come from us. We do get 100% of our gate, but none of the concessions (basketball). And due to previous scheduling and Hurricane Ike, we only had three home games this season. Two of which, Southern and Shawnee, brought such a scant crowd you could probably count them with fingers and toes. Combine that with having to pay bills from the previous staff we are working on 2009 with less than zero. Hopefully that will change this season with home games vs. Male, Butler, DeSales and Fairdale. We do charge each player $50, which goes for the KHSAA mandated catastrophic insurance, tryout fee and physical.

Louisville Western: We only lose 5 starting spots (3 defense-2 offense) to graduation off our team that started our playoff game vs. North Bullitt. Sophomore Leon Melvin was honorable mention AP all-state at corner. He had 9 picks this past season – 3 in our win vs. Louisville Central. 3 others were returned for TD’s. He also averaged 8 yards a carry and 17 yards/reception in limited play as a WR/slotback. He’s started every varsity game since the opener of his Freshman year. Our biggest problem to overcome was the fact we got hired so late that we got no off-season workouts, no spring practice and very limited pre-summer (7 on 7) work. We didn’t actually meet the kids until the last Monday of last school year. We didn’t have the time to build the much-needed discipline in the program, we pretty had to jump right in and try to install our system and go from there. This year we should be better by default just by having all the off-season work. We also have a very strong senior class, many of who are going to be 2 or 3-year starters. Some of our notable players: Daishon Maxwell – C/DE, Senior Leon Melvin – WR/DB, Junior Cortez Ricketts – RB, Senior Orlando Brown – QB, Senior (transfer, sat out 08) Kenyon Young – LB, Junior Joe Malone – OL/DL, Senior Romero Brown – WR, Senior Domonic Turner – RB/DB, Senior JaCorey Ritchie – LB, Junior We also made a big jump in our non-district schedule. Marion County Bowl, replaced with DeSales Bryan Station, replaced with Simon Kenton (in talks) Central, replaced with Male Southern, replaced with Jeffersontown Iroquois, replaced with Butler Shawnee, replaced with Ballard. Hopefully this schedule will make us a better team in November.

Thanks papa, long time lurker - 1st time poster. My father coached David at Manual back in the early 70's. He's a good football coach and a better person. Like others have said, no one really knows what goes behind the scenes, but In my opinion a big loss for HC.

He was an assistant at Holy Cross for quite a few years before becoming head coach.
