The speed might be a tad overrated. The experience took a hit with a few practice injuries and some seniors choosing not to be part of the 2009 team. CAL was pretty good. They run an option attack with a QB that makes VERY good decisions with the ball, nothing flashy, just a grind-it-out running game. They made us play "assignment football" and at times we didn't, but I would estimate that CAL had >75 yards offense the whole game. The younger Kragthorpe threw some nice balls for CAL in the 5th quarter, when the JV/Frosh were out there.

Apparently the scrimmage was stopped by the heat index about 30 minutes in. The teams sat around for quite a while and the heat index still did not drop below the acceptable level. Louisville Central packed up and left for the movies while waiting for their return transportation to show. I was also told Warren Central left as well. Heat index issues in the middle of the day in August - big surprise.

Western won 7-0 in a real game simulation, the only difference being 8-minute quarters. Western scored on a long pass just inside the 3-minute mark of the 1st half. Western also had a few other scoring opportunities thwarted by turnovers and a good C.A.L. goal line stand. The Warrior defense was stifling, only allowing C.A.L. one possession that crossed the 50-yard line. Western opens regular season play next Friday at home vs. DeSales. Christian Academy’s season opener is Aug. 28th at home vs. Indianapolis Broad Ripple.

Male hasn't been "Male" since 06, and unfortunately for them Justin Green isn't returning. They will probably win their district, and a playoff game or two, but will hit the wall hard in a 3rd round game vs. Trinity if they get that far. Simon Kenton, like Male, will likely win its first 2 playoff games, only to get drummed by St. X in the regional finals. Only because of DaMarcus Smith's injury, Ballard won't finish last in that tough district. Even if Manual were playing a pansy schedule they would still lose twice to St. X. Eastern didn't lose much off an 11-2 team whose only two losses were lopsided ones to Trinity. Scott Co. will make their usual noise, might even make it to the semi-state. LBS could make a run. Mad Cen is another that usually makes it out a round or two. But they will all have turned in their equipment by December 1. If it's not Trinity vs. St. X in week 15, it will be a bigger upset than if it wasn't those two last year.

I was switching servers and got cute and accidently deleted more than a few files and have just been too busy to fix it. Hopefully, I'll get the site back up by the time the season starts.

We (Western) have been in 2-a-days since the 1st day (we didn't start until July 20) and will continue until the day before our 1st day of school (Aug. 12). Although our's is a little different. We come in at 8AM and lift, run and hit some special teams, sending the players home at 10AM. We come back at 7PM where we do football only until 8:30PM. Getting the running part in early makes the players seem more fresh for the "football" part of practice in the evening. They seem to go harder knowing they don't have to run after the evening practice.

Player: Best - Playing on an undefeated team and scoring TD vs. Ballard in the playoffs at the old KFEC stadium - 1981. Worst - Losing to Trinity the following week and leaving several layers of skin on the turf in the north end zone. Coach: Best - Beating Trinity as the OC of Doss in the playoffs - 1995. Worst - Losing to Central in the final seconds as a 5 TD underdog by 1 point the following week.

From the Louisville Courier-Journal: Waters new coach at Iroquois Dwayne Waters has been named the new football coach at Iroquois. He replaces Jeff Norman, who resigned after going 3-7 in is only season as head coach. "I'm ready to go," said the 27-year-old Waters. "The key priority is getting athletes out and keeping them out. Kenny kept line coach Les Goldring, who was an assiatant at Waggener last season and had been hired by the departing Atherton coach. Not sure if he is OL or DL coach, or both.

It's a necessity. Some of our kids, especially the ones too young to drive, simply have no other way to practice. Plus it puts a little more green in my pocket.

In pool play Central, St. Xavier & Seneca were all 3-0, Male 2-1, Moore and Fern Creek 0-3. Shelby Co. knocked Central out in the quarterfinals.

Final four teams left playing were: St. Xavier Seneca Shelby Co. Lex. Cath.

We do our 2-a-days (at Louisville Western) a little different. We bring them in at 8 AM and go out and do our running/conditioning program for about 45 minutes (in t-shirts & shorts), then come inside and lift for about an hour. The players are all on their way home by 10 AM. We start this schedule on July 15th and continue until the week before school starts. We bring them back in the evening (they are in stretch lines at 8 PM) for the "football" part of practice. We stretch then get right into individual drills for about 20 minutes, spend about 30 minutes on special teams then scrimmage the rest of the time. We are off the field at 9:30 PM. I drive the activity bus for the kids that live more than a couple miles from the school (about 10% of our kids) and get them home by 11:00 PM. We also pick them up for the evening practice, but for the AM workouts, they have to get there and back home on their own. This is a three-fold strategy. First, the kids think they are getting a break not having to be out in the hottest part of the day (2-6 PM). They practice MUCH harder in the late evening in the cooler temps, and knowing that they don't have the dreaded sprints at the end of practice. Second, it gives the players (and coaches) all afternoon to take care of personal matters, get some rest or even go to work. Third, with the kids getting home so late, and knowing they must be back at 8 AM the following day, they don't have time to go out and run the streets and get in trouble. You wouldn't believe how much more tolerable it is at 8 PM as opposed to 6 PM to start practice in.

Louisville Western junior DB Leon Melvin. Honorable mention AP all-state last season. 9 Interceptions last season, 3 vs. Louisville Central, 3 others returned for TD's. 2 kickoff returns and 1 punt return for TD. Has started every game at corner since the season opener of his freshman year.

If there are multiple teams, like in UofL's, Male's or UK's, they usually have "pools" consisting of 3-4-5 teams depending on the # of teams playing. Those teams play a round-robin within their pool and the winner adavances to a single elinimation tournament. The "weeknight" 7 on 7's, usually the teams that show up play other teams in 30-45 minute games until it gets dark.

It was strange, as our game with X wore on, I couldn't help but notice some of the teams/fans not playing at the time were standing aroung the outside of the fence in the endzone and actually cheering for us to beat X. Like you said, take 7 on 7's for what they are worth, we were 2-1 vs. 6-A teams, so I'd say we held our own.

I believe St. X won the JV division.

Bobby's been "down" before at Male. After winning the state title in 1993 and losing the only game of the 94 season to X in the playoffs (11-1), Male had consecutive 7-5 seasons, and that was with a RB named Tony Driver carrying the load. Male came back 2 seasons later and won another state title. Then came the Bush era (99-02) when Male went to three straight 4-A title games, winning in 2000. After the 2002 season, 9-4 and 9-3. Then the 2006 team that lost it's only game to Trinity in the 2nd round of the playoffs, getting stopped on the goal line as time ran out. Now we get back to last season's "unMale" like 9-5. Yeah, they made the "Final 4", and their 2 best players, Justin Green & Stewart Brown were >100% for part of the season. Possibly the best game they played last season was the win at Fern Creek where most the "experts" said this was the year Fern Creek would beat Male and win the district, which didn't happen. Of course it didn't hurt matters that Trinity and St. X were in the other half of the state bracket. It was set up for this "unMale" like team to make it to the state finals. Then they dropped the semi-state game - at home - to Simon Kenton. The one constant is that Bobby has always had the triggerman to run his offense, whether it be his son, Logan, Ahrens, Blackaby or Bush (the 2006 QB's name escapes me) he always had that QB to light up the scoreboard. He hasn't really had it the past two seasons. Does this kid playing QB (Britt?) now have it? Only time will tell. Whether the rumors of Male making it harder to get kids in school is true, as long as Bob Redman is at Male, they will be someone to be dealt with. They might not be contenders every year, but you can bet he will put a well-coached team on the field.

Coaches leaving or getting fired were common under Dr. Hill's reign as Principal at Shawnee. When the school goes K-12 Kenny will have a middle school already in the same building to draw from. A very unique advantage that most schools don't have.

Friday results: Central won the U of L group. Ballard won the Male group. Some of the games were moved to U of L because of wet fields.

All coaching hires must be approved by JCPS/Board of Education after the school decides on a coach before they are "official". The board meets every Monday or Tuesday.

Kenny has been an assistant at Valley the past 3-4 years. Was Shawnee's HC from 2002-2004. Before that he was an assistant at Atherton. I believe he was an Atherton grad in the mid-80's.
