AIRVES Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Western won 7-0 in a real game simulation, the only difference being 8-minute quarters. Western scored on a long pass just inside the 3-minute mark of the 1st half. Western also had a few other scoring opportunities thwarted by turnovers and a good C.A.L. goal line stand. The Warrior defense was stifling, only allowing C.A.L. one possession that crossed the 50-yard line. Western opens regular season play next Friday at home vs. DeSales. Christian Academy’s season opener is Aug. 28th at home vs. Indianapolis Broad Ripple.
Oxnard Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 This result surprises me. I thought Western's speed and experience would totally dominate CAL in this scrimmage.

Can they compete with DeSales?
Oxnard Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 It will be Western's speed against DeSales' power when these two tangle. Prior to the CAL scrimmage, I might have picked Western because of the big speed advantage, but I don't know now.

I thought Western's speed and experience would totally dominate CAL in this scrimmage. The speed might be a tad overrated. The experience took a hit with a few practice injuries and some seniors choosing not to be part of the 2009 team. CAL was pretty good. They run an option attack with a QB that makes VERY good decisions with the ball, nothing flashy, just a grind-it-out running game. They made us play "assignment football" and at times we didn't, but I would estimate that CAL had >75 yards offense the whole game. The younger Kragthorpe threw some nice balls for CAL in the 5th quarter, when the JV/Frosh were out there.
dolphin72 Posted August 16, 2009 Posted August 16, 2009 Don't sleep on CAL this year. Inexperience shouldn't be a concern as they return 9 starters on offense and 10 starters on defense. The option offense that they put in was just added in the summer so I'm sure they are still adjusting too it. In my opinion they should have a very good season if the offense can continue to improve.

Agreed Glad they got rid of the A11 offense they had earlier in the past.
dolphin72 Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Yeah that wasn't their real offense. They had a few formations of that, but nonetheless this new offense is going to be a lot better than the past years
dirtyred1967 Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 (edited) Western should be okay. They just need a few games under their belts, to let the offense catch up with the defense. :taz: Edited August 18, 2009 by Birdsfan Rule 13

Where does CAL stand compared to DeSales. I've heard some talk that DeSales might have a team that could challenge for the 2A title.
