Let's not get carried away again...........not All the best players in the ninth have HOLMES across their chest ! Silly speculation at best. Let's stick to real facts.......on that end Holmes is the real deal. My simple take: HOLMES: Pittman was a presence...took SC big men out of their game early/often. Thought Ricardo played well in streaks, but JJ was the best Johnson last night as he contributed in all facets and the press did hurt them in his absence (depth for Holmes is another discussion) Riley was outstanding, very impressed with shot and composure, showed some leadership that will be important to this team. Overall, great execution early, clearly the quicker team most of the night, definitely proved they have enough to contend for the title. Henley - love his calmness and way he handles these kids, seems to be a perfect fit and is developing a great program. SCOTT CO. - Euton is better than he played in this game, he and Phares got taken out of their style of play and didn't adjust. (have seen Euton play alot, not UK/SEC caliber) Jackson is a great talent but continues to not rise-up, really think there is more to offer. Gulyn was clearly the the best player on SC, liked his shot, hops, hustle. Flannery should have stayed North, nice player but seems like they are trying to find time for him on the floor, fit better at Boone. SC is a talented squad with some depth. Not quite as good as hyped, but don't think this game makes them less of a contender....we may have seen one/both state finalist in this one! Great talent all over the floor.....very entertaining game in a wonderful facility....nice event ! Hate to part this way but, the Cincy Enquirer photo should have read " Boone Co. transfer Austin Flannery and Rose Hill transfer Chad Jackson guard Newport transfer Brandon Housley in the Holmes/Scott Co. match-up in the Bank-One Center last night" Sorry, just struck me as funny !

I think HHS is a work in progress....winning games and not necessarily playing great basketball yet. They are a really good TEAM and it shows in their approach to what they do. Adding Grubbs and Welz to the rotation will also take some time but they fit nicely and their depth and size will be important later. As far as last night, Watson had a outstanding game, Kowolonek was a little off his game but always contributes in all facets of the game, Lother showed that he is a great ball-handler/passer, Grote needs to cut down turnovers but he hasn't shown how good he can be yet. Gordon, Dill, & Smith-Keller all contribute nicely. Thought Dill was a force until fouls put him on the bench, Gordon &S-K got their shots and played strong D. Overall, a pretty good performance. CCH, not so good. Obviously the guard play is weak.....Pauley had some moments offensively. Thought their rebounding was poor. (one series I think HHS rebounded four/five before getting stickback). Scoring threats were limited, at one point it was obvious that Maile was their only option which made him very easy to defend. I stated my thoughts earlier about Wellbrock & Isler; Ice will not start and Wellbrock has more up side. That needs to start happening down low or Maile will continue to be lonely out there...with or without Shover. Coach L will make this team better defensively/intensity but it probably isn't their year.

I think Ryle's size will be a problem for CCH in this one and McLiesh and Coleman will put big numbers in the scoring column. CCH playing at home may be the best thing going for them on Friday. Wondering about CovCath starting five........who is in Shover's spot and what has their rotation been?

I think this could be a close game.......great rivalry will make that so. Right now, still give the edge to HHS even without football players, but make no mistake, it will be a different match-up when they meet later in the season/post season. Curious what thoughts are for the keys for each team to win THIS match-up?

For the record, HHS did win the Middle School tourney in 8th grade....a pretty long time ago. (Btw, Ockerman lost in the quarters) The kids on varsity now did play together then, along with several others who no longer play and a couple who will join the team from football. The only significance is that they have grown together and that they are really good teammates to each other. They like each other, spend time away from the game together, have accomplished things as a team already and it translates to good team chemistry and unselfish play. That is special. I think those that have an opportunity to witness it will understand how special that is and will discover why this HHS squad will continue to be successful as they have on every level leading to now.

I know Brandon is tough and if their is a kid that will give it all to get there it will be him. I hope and expect that he will come back strong and he is a "Roller" in the truest sense. My comment was more to do with the D-1 prospect and Brandon unfortunately suffered a setback in that arena that will be tougher now to overcome. I wish him the best, he is a first rate kid and a heck of a football player, thankfully he will get to show everyone all next year unlike Josh did by missing most of this year.

Wow, if that's true let's not post any predictions for Holmes against ninth region teams.....they should win every game by 25 points minimum don't ya think?

ER, Maybe he wouldn't be so underrated if you would quit touting those Holmes studs every step ! LOL Actually, Kowolonek has developed nicely and is actually a very young Jr. .....the best is yet to come. It is nice to see someone break into the Holmes/Boone all-star lineup though !

I think Andy developed some habits in AAU about looking to his outside shot more and he has never been a true "banger" down low considering his size. In some games you may see him assert himself as an inside presence but from what I have seen, he is generally more comfortable doing both and often times gets too much time outside the paint. Definitely something to track as Boone tries to create their style of play.

Let's put it in perspective a little..........MC is ranked partly because of where they finished last season. They are missing players that will make them better (so is Highlands), how much better? Guess the rest of the season will say. Regarding the game, HHS outplayed them (last night) and can take a win from the fieldhouse to build their season on. Does it make them better than Ryle, Holmes, whoever.....no. What can be taken from this is that HHS showed toughness down the stretch to win a tight game in a hostile environment....stuff that marks a good team. They showed that the talent they put on the floor is good enough to win and hope that the big guys joining in will allow them to compete with teams with better size. Beyond that, they still have to win ballgames, but this is going to be a formidable ninth region team capable of beating anyone on a given night. Can't agree with a first place vote in the local polls but they are clearly a top five team and may surprise some on how competetive they will be against their schedule.

Scoring line Kowolonek 24 pts. 13 boards (8-8 from line), Watson 12, Grote 10, Gordon 4, Dill 3, Smith-Keller 1.................Dill and Kowolonek hit 4 FT in the stretch. Nice game Birds...good defensive effort by all.

Anyone give a take on the starters for these two teams? Curious where Josh Raleigh is stacking up at Dixie ..............

It's easy to get carried away isn't it ! For the neysayers, remember there are a lot of D-1 schools....... not all are Florida, "The Ohio State", etc. Regarding the Highlands players, Collinsworth is in.........Grubbs &Welz are possibilities based on size (think S. Wise/Holy Cross) Will Bardo is a possibility based on size /speed but needs some bulk and a productive Sr. year. As for D-1, I'll stop there. (Roller was close before the injury but will have a tough road back (think Josh Conner). Although the 2007 Birds had a lot of potential & expectation, what they didn't have was comparable size. The 2009 "football" class will have a number of others drawing interest outside D-1 (Buten, Hogue, Schlosser to name a few) and could have a large number actuallly hit the gridiron at the collegiate level. Regarding some others in N. Ky: Simpson is in.........Nichols has size but is still unproven; Quainoo may be undersized; haven't seen West enough lately to say for sure but he has size and is progressing. Overall, the Class of 2010 is a pretty strong group in N Ky. and plenty will move on, just stay grounded when you think legit D-1.

You may know more about the make -up of this team than I do............ I am commenting more on what I saw at the scrimmage. I understand that Isler may be late joining the team (after football) and perhaps would explain his later entry into the game. I agree that he played well, probably better than Wellbrock, but I don't recall that they spent much time on the floor together? Guess we'll see how it shakes out. Overall I thought CovCath looked a little sluggish and didn't seem to find a great rythmn/intensity, in part because they didn't shoot well early. They will shoot better and I'm sure their energy will increase.........it was just a scrimmage.

What I saw was a very talented and deep Holmes squad have their way in this scrimmage............. I agree that Male has some talent and will likely add to this with their footballers coming on making them a solid contender, but Holmes clearly overmatched them at this point. I will also suggest that this Holmes squad showed signs of lacking chemistry that I did not witness last year. The talent is obvious, they have plenty of maturing to do as the season progresses and someone must assume the loss of Henderson's leadership or they will lose a couple of games they shouldn't. If they build a "team" they really could be outstanding. BTW, no team will play "above the rim" like this team does!

I will respectfully disagree with this strategy.......what I saw was methodical movement from a large "big-man" playing against a team with no one on the floor over 6'1" tall the entire game. I beleive Ice got the minutes he will probably expect to see all season. He came in late in the first half and gave quality minutes. He uses his body down low but don't see him logging major minutes from other players. Wellbrock will remain their primary post player. He played ok, but I feel he has a bigger "up-side" as he moves up/down the floor better.

Love the speculation of who might join in from football...........but find it interesting that some think that you just walk off the field onto the court. Although I agree that Collinsworth is athletic enough (defense, quickness, rebounding) to help this team, he is lacking in true basketball skills to just jump ahead on this team. David Hogue, played 8th grade, good athlete, not a b-baller, wouldn't make this team. Let's not forget that the roster (including Grubbs & Welz) is comprised of the same group that was 20-1 as Freshman......... and some have been working on their game year round. BTW they currently dress 8 Jrs and 5 Sophs =13 and the scrimmage tommorrow is moved to 3:00 JV and 5:00 Varsity if you want your first look.
