Scrimmage: Holmes 68 Male 63

Featured Replies

1st quarter: Holmes 20 Male 12

2nd quarter: Male 17 Holmes 16

3rd Quarter: Male 19 Holmes 17

4th quarter: Holmes 15 Male 15

Final: Holmes 68 Male 63

Game wasn't as close as the score might indicate.

Holmes subbed a lot the whole game, playing 11 kids, while Male stayed with the starters the whole game. Holmes only played their starters for the first quarter and 3 minutes in to the 2nd quarter and then Henley started sending waves of players in and out of the game, not playing more than 2 starters at a time the rest of the way.

Holmes starters outscored Male's starters 33-16 through the first half. Didn't really keep track the second half since Holmes only had their starting 5 in for maybe a total of 3 minutes.

1st quarter Holmes jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised behind put back dunks off the rim by Housely and Pittman.

2nd quarter Holmes opened up a 13-2 lead and then pulled everyone but Pittman, which was the reason for the close score. Ricardo Johnson didn't play at all in the 2nd or 3rd quarters.

3rd quarter Male jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead but Holmes went on a run and took a 13-11 lead before trading leads back and forth to end the quarter with Male winning by 2. Pittman I believe had 2 big 3's during their run and capped it with a power dunk in traffic over a 6'6 and 6'5 kid. (#44 and #40/42?)

4th quarter was back and forth with Rico Johnson leading the way. He showed why he is one of the best in the state. Male had nobody that could stop him and I believe he had 8 of Holmes 15 points.

All in all a good showing by both teams, but if Male is the 2nd/3rd best team in the region, the 7th really isn't as good as advertised.

BTW, #1 and #44 both looked good for Male as did #40. (Tall light skinned kid)

We are hearing about the usual Holmes suspects but what about Riley, JJ and the subs?

Riley looked solid handling the rock. He didn't shoot much but I believe he knocked down a jumper and a 3 in the quarter.

JJ is going to turn heads statewide this year. He has really improved. He knocked down 2 or 3 treys and was a monster on the boards along with Pittman. He had several put backs off of offensive rebounds. If he gets in the lane you're going to have to foul him because if not you're going to get dunked on. (Same with Cardo)

Dom Johnson came in off the bench and knocked down back to back 3 pointers in the 3rd quarter and played solid defensively against Male's top guard. (#1)

Keyvon Arnold had a few baskets around the rim and knocked down a 3 pointer as well. All in all a pretty good performance by the main players that you'll see this year.

1st quarter: Holmes 20 Male 12

2nd quarter: Male 17 Holmes 16

3rd Quarter: Male 19 Holmes 17

4th quarter: Holmes 15 Male 15

A five point win and Male is missing at least two starters, including their post player? You can paint this any way you want but after getting hammered by Tates Creek I wouldn't be making any comments on the 7th region.

Again, as with the Male-Scott Co. scrimmage, I wouldn't sell Male short until they have their whole squad.

Holmes certainly will be solid this season but I would bet they would have a tough game with any of the top seven teams from the 7th region! Certainly you have some quality athletes and a good team but I think if you ask your coach he would not want to have to deal with the 7th region this year!

1. Holmes didn't get hammered by Tates Creek. They played without their top player in Ricardo Johnson, and unlike Tates Creek and Male, actually subbed in EVERYONE rather than just playing 6 or 7 kids. A 5 point win on the board for Holmes but through the 2 quarters that both teams had ALL 5 starters in Holmes outscored Male 33-16 and would have been up 33-12 at one point.

2. I understand Male didn't have their full squad, but you also have to realize Holmes starters probably only played 12 minutes together today and Johnson didn't even play the 2nd or 3rd quarters. When he came in the 4th quarter, he immediately took over and Male started to struggle. Male got a lot of their points off turnovers in the second and 3rd quarters when Holmes had Soph Herndon running the point whose probably 5'8 140 lbs.

3. I agree Holmes would have a tough game with any of the top 7th region teams this year but they aren't as close to Holmes as some might want to think. In the second and third quarters, Holmes played no more than 2 starters at a time. Male was trying to win, while Holmes was just trying to get players some clock. I'd hope Male can keep it close when Holmes has basically their JV integrated with 2 varsity kids the whole game. (Outside of the 1st quarter and several minutes of the second.) When Holmes had all 5 starters on the floor, they scored at will.

Point 1- Male was missing maybe their best player in OJ Bell who is 6'5" and one of their best scorers/shooters in James Pfillisefske.

Point 2- If you have no bench what happens if you get into foul trouble or face a team that forces you to sub(Jtown, Ballard, or Seneca) by the pace they play?

Point 3- No way I give you the win over Jtown or Eastern and, as I said, you would have a game with 4-5 others in the 7th.

You guys may win it all but the excuses need to stop because, unfortunately, the injury bug and foul trouble are always an issue and your "JV" guys better be able to play or you may be sitting at home come Rupp time!

Arnold can be the player to put ,Holmes over the top.I played against him all summer. His game has improved a great deal.

I know Male was without a few players. I was just stating that had Holmes left their starting 5 in the whole game like Male did, this one wouldn't have been close, and the score over the first 12 minutes shows it. (Holmes 33 Male 16)

Holmes will normally go around 7 deep but today played 10 different players. (R. Johnson, J. Johnson, Pittman, Housely, Riley, D. Johnson, Arnold- first 7... others to play extensive time who normally wouldn't see the floor much: Herndon, Slusher, Rice)

I'm not making any excuses. But do you honestly think if Riley and the Johnson Brothers play all of the 2nd and 3rd quarters, Male would have been able to keep it close? If you were there, you know what I'm talking about. As far as Eastern or J'town beating Holmes...guess we won't find out until March.

I agree. At 6'6 he is tough match up both inside and out. He has a nice stroke from outside and if he gets the ball around the rim, will throw it down if you don't put a body on him.

This is the preseason.Holmes will be ready in March. They have 3 or 4 kids that could play big time D 1. Thats hard to find in Kentucky. Most teams just won't be able to match up.

At one point today, Holmes had this lineup in:

Housely (6'2)

J. Johnson (6'5)

R. Johnson (6'5)

Arnold (6'6)

Pittman (6'7)

The only team I can think of that can match up with that is SC. Scary part about it is Housely is the only sr in that group.

He is my younger cousin so i might be a little bias. Over the summer I seen frist hand his work ethic. I worked out with him and Greg Rice. Arnold without doubt had more push and drive. I beleive he has more upside than Greg.

Next year will be scary for sure. It s a gaurd i beleive he is a freshman. I cant think of his name he played for Northern Kentucky Tarheels. He is going to be special. Last i checked he was ranked in the top ten nationally.

Christian McClendon (6'1 G) is the 8th grader that you're referring to. Hasn't played in either scrimmage but he is going to be a special player.

Arnolds two younger brothers played with him for the Tarheels. Holmes has a lot of talent coming up. It is scary for the ninth. Not to mention BABY GATES .
