What's the most common excuse...

Featured Replies

...for poor showings in scrimmages and very early regular-season games?

1. Our football players aren't back yet.

2. Coach is experimenting with the lineup.

3. The trip to the mountains was too long and the roads were kind of crooked.

4. We have a new coach and a new system.

5. We're sandbagging.

or maybe #6, in which I happen to take some stock:

6. It's early.

One thread had it being not so much the roads were crooked in the mountains as it were the refs. I think it was the GRC vs EC thread.

I'd say most people use the excuse that they don't have all their football players, therefore; not at full strength as a team. The most valid of the reasons is that it is early. Teams are still working on their chemistry and working with which lineup works best in which situation. Scrimmages are practices for game situations, so it makes sense that the excuse it's early would come into play.

That's a great list. Thank goodness the regular season begins this week, so we can put all this scrimmage talk behind us.

Added.

8. Team shoes just arrived. They are not broken in yet.

Resetting the score to zero after each period sometimes keeps the fans away.

Surly wasn't in that thread, it's a straight shot from Winchester to Ashland on I 64. It's just 100 mile drive. That could be a legit excuse. I'll use that one.:ylsuper:

I think early season games could be explained by "it's early" and/or our football players don't have their "basketball legs" yet. I remember in the 2003/2004 season Warren Central got beat 83-55 on December 12th by Lexington Catholic at Bellarmine University. After 15 games they were 8-7 but finished the season with a 21 game winning streak and the state championship over Mason County. That was one example I can recall where those two excuses proved to be valid.

However, I agree some of the excuses you hear are quite humorous.
