As i read the post about good officials, and after a discussion with a few coaches at lunch today (snow day), we talked about officials. Most importantly how fast the game has gotten, how talented the players have gotten and how our expectations as coaches have gotten sky high for officials as well. My question after all this is have we gotten too hard on them? Do we expect too much? It's a tough question because as a coach and fan of basketball i have seen some very dispicable things said and yelled out at officials by coaches and fans alike. However, i expect as the game changes over time for officials to change as well. In high school basketball it is ultimately about the kids and sportsmanship. I sometimes feel like we lost track of that somewhere along the way. Your thoughts as both coaches, players and fans?:popcorn:

Used to coach in 12th region. I always liked Jimmy Dyehouse, Scott Bottoms, and Tony Gray. I believe they still call there.

:idunno: I noticed all except Jack that you "scratched" are younger officials in BBA. Is there something to that? I believe all of them do college ball. Dustin and Staci are womens college. Not sure about McMillen but have seen him a few times this year and he has always been pretty solid. Jack has been aorund for a while and i know he is pretty high up in womens college.

I agree with Kevin Walters, he is one i forgot. The officials i have had on this list have been pretty consistent IMO. I know what to expect when they walk into my gym no matter whom we are playing. They call it both ways and control the game from start to finish. I might not always agree with the calls, but again, i know what to expect and I know i will never agree with them all.

10th and 11th has a ton: Bart Lenox Kirk Hudson Dustin Music Royce Blevins Jack Whitamore Terri Smith James McMillin Staci Music Don Warner I could name more just can't think of all their names right now. I'm sure some would disagree but i would take any of these any night.

Who's on the other semi-final?

This was probably the most exciting girls baskeball game ive seen all season. I was there and not cheering for either team, but the atmopshere and play was excellent. Both teams played hard but it seemed to me St. Pat played a little more tight than BC. I know if it wasn't for a few key press-breaks by a certain BC point guard, i apologize for not knowing her name, this game could have gotten ugly for BC. In the end it came down to freethrows and layups for St. Pat. I can think of at least 3 times they missed two or more shots under the basket. Down the stretch they also missed some clutch free throws. Ive seen some talk about the refs and i know two of three from seeing them at some other pretty key games throughout the years. I thought they let the girls play on both ends. In this type of game where a lot was on the line i was impressed with how they handled it. The coaches did not seem upset with their calls and everytime i heard a whistle half the crowd yelled at them and the other cheered. Thats the way it should be in my opinion. Great game on both teams part and i was glad i decided to make the drive to watch it.

Roger Bacon from Ohio beat Leslie's team by 1 point if i am not mistaken. He did not get the ball much in the first half at all and it seemed like his team was shooting a ton of threes that just would not fall.

WOW so three points even if defense touches it inside arc. Try explaining this one to a coach...

Saw this one in a middle school game (it was a tourney so I do not remember who the teams were) Player A, on red team, is behind the threepoint line and throws a pass to his teamate. While in the air it is deflected by a red team members shoulder, also behind the three point line, and goes into the basket. (Seriously, the crowd went nuts!) :dancingpa The officials gave the red team three points. Questions: 1. Was that correct? I thought a three point try had to be attempted. 2. What if it had hit a defensive player behind the three point line and went in? 3. I think i know the answer to this one but the passer is behind the three point line and the person it hits is not, is it two points whether it hits offense or defense and goes in?

Dribbling up the floor, make a strong move into the lane, jump stop 5 or 6 feet like Jeff Sheppherd at UK used to do, land on both feet, then pivot. It isn't a walk right now because at the time of the jump stop a pivot foot hasn't been establlished. Wrong, if you are dribbling and jump stop you are not allowed to pivot. A pivot after a jump stop is a walk! :thumb:

Great game. Both teams played tough. As usual it came down to free throws and missed layups for both teams. Franklin edged it out by being a little more aggressive.

I guess it comes down to what the official rules as making a move to the basketball for a score. I agree with the count being suspended on a move to the basket.

Can you be standing on the line....but not across into the paint for more than 3 seconds?:idunno:

I disagree with 6. I know the count is supposed to be suspended but if the player posting is in for two seconds, catches it, dribbles one way, then the next, pump fakes, and then shoots i seriously hope the official starts the count back up on the the second dribble...or even the fake. thoughts

6 is the only definite 3 seconds IMO

I agree with clyde...tough call to make not being there and basing everything off this picture.

Was his hand on top of the ball and as the shooter brought his arms up did that create the arm contact? Hard to tell from this picture.

I could see why an official might call it on the defense because of the rule interpretations above, however, if an offensive player with the ball clearly runs over a defensive player with his back to him (and the defensive guy does not move) it has to be an offensive foul based off those same rules above.

Thats exactly why they are out there working those games to begin with. They are trying to get better (Most anyway). I always tell my freshman, JV and middle school coaches to be patient and make sure if you know a rule is broken to let the assigner know. Even let the officials know, in the proper way, if they are open to listening to you. If you record your games make an extra copy and send it in to the assigner. I have found this helps as well.

I know i am probably stating the obvious but it seems like to me SC just tries to outscore everyone they play. Defense comes second in everything they do.
