I didn't realize that. Perhaps because I just haven't been to a lot of Girl's Senior Night events. But I am pleased to know it happens regularly!

Same thing happened at Boone County's Senior Night last night. Prior to the introduction of players, Sacred Heart's seniors were called out in front of the scorer's table and presented flowers and a memento by the Boone seniors. This was something I had not seen before and, like you, also thought it a classy act.

Sacred Heart 17 9 12 13 51 Boone Co. 13 19 16 16 64 Sacred Heart (14-12) -- Peabody 7, Storch 6, Washle 2, Stough 13, Gahafer 2, Clemons 21. Boone Co. (21-6) -- Fields 3, Davis 6, Shrout 14, Browning 9, Sandlin 2, Moss 28, Nash 2. Moss had 28 and 12 (unofficial), Shrout and Browning hit a number of key 3's, and Sandlin played a fabulous floor game on Senior Night at Boone County as the Lady Rebels held off a determined Sacred Heart squad. Seniors honored prior to the game included Olivia Fields, Joscelyn Davis, Courtney Sellers, and Heather Sandlin. Fields started the game and opened scoring for the Lady Rebels with a big 3. All four of these young ladies will be missed! After Sacred Heart opened a 17-13 first quarter lead, BC had a big second quarter led by Moss' 8 points to lead 32-26 at the half. Sacred Heart cut the margin to 4 points at the 5 minute mark of the 3rd before Browning and Shrout hit a series of 3's to build the lead back to 10 to start the fourth quarter. The Lady Valkyries never got closer than 8 in the fourth and Boone held their largest lead of 15 behind 11 points in the quarter by Moss. The Lady Valkyries, playing without several starters out for the year, battled hard the entire game and gave Boone County fits with their constant motion and picks and screens. Morgan Clemons posted up hard and got a bunch of close-in shots. Mary Gordon Stough also got several buckets in the paint.

I can only speak for why I did it when I officiated. I saw no reason to see an impending violation that was unnecessary and let it go when it was correctable. For example, on a free throw or a jump ball, if I saw a player with their foot on the line, a violation once the ball is put in play, I would say "No. 32, get your foot off the line" or "No. 32, watch your foot". I just thought it better to prevent it from happening if I could. The game is extremely fast and I think an official could blow his/her whistle every few seconds if they wished. That really bogs the game down. I played a ton of BB and felt like I had a pretty good feel for the game so I officiated to be as invisible as possible yet keep things in control. I used what I'll term now (never really thought that much about it at the time) as "advantage/disadvantage". I would let players play, use their hands in a manner that, per the book, was against the rules.............as long as it didn't provide one player an advantage and put another at a disadvantage. I would allow a defensive player to "feel" his man, touch him for location while watching the ball, as long as he didn't hold him. Being more defensively oriented as a young player I knew that completely hands off against a really good player was a killer for the defender. Now if that defender began to hold a bit, or push a bit, or do something that gave him a "potential" advantage, then I took it more seiously. The first time I saw it.......and it had no effect on the play.......I'd warn the defender. Maybe even a second time. At some point after a warning or two, or if it became evident the player simply wasn't going to listen, I'd call a foul. Of course if the very first offense created an advantage, let's say a grab preventing the offensive player from being able to get to a pass, there were no warnings, a foul was called. Those are my thoughts on what I did and why. Many of my fellow officials at the time did the same. Generally, at least from my perspective, the officials who didn't do things this way had not played a lot of basketball. Probably a bias on my part but, I always felt most of the better officials had played the game and thus had a "feel" that one can't get otherwise.

Been there a couple of times........on someone else's $ (and that is HIGHLY unlikely to happen again!). Great place! I loved the Leap of Faith waterslide. I have habitually low blood pressure because of a health condition but a early morning ride on that thing usually took care of that! One reason I'd like to go back would be to ride on the new water slides.

I agree. I officiated many years ago and often "warned" versus penalizing when the offense wasn't affecting play but could in a different scenario. But I always used a number, even if I knew a name. By the way, I like your flag!!!

Absolutely agree! Sandlin is the engine that makes Boone go. Her improvement at the point throught this season has been remarkable, seeing as how she hadn't previously handled those duties. After a shaky first game outing Sandlin has been excellent, handling the basketball, breaking pressure, and running the break, and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 2 after that first game. That's very, very good for a high school player. And the beneficiary of a ton of her assists has been Moss. And her quickness allows her to be a very pesky defender as well.

I don't have to. Boone County's statistician does that (maybe the only stat person who does) and I can check it at the Boone County Girls BB page on the Cincinnati Enquirer site.

Moss sat out a bunch, some from foul trouble and some from those "teachable moment(s)" you mentioned! She played but a total of 17 minutes in the game so I'd say that had a lot to do with her totals for the game.

Boone County shot 16-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line which is very good................HOWEVER they started the game making just ONE of their first EIGHTEEN shots from the floor. That is horrible and how they led, even by two, at the half with that start is amazing.

I'd say it's more an "in the eye of the beholder" thing. Seems most of the complaints about officiating in this thread is coming from the fans of the team that lost. That's usually how it is. Had the outcome turned the other way I suspect that might be different because I know there are Boone County fans who weren't enamored with the officiating either.

Postponed. They were to play Kettering Fairmont. Would have been a good one to watch as Boone's Moss would have gone against Fairmont's Cassie Sant, a 6-2 senior who is committed to Dayton.

Good stuff! Some schools start with letters much sooner than the sophomore year as they see kids at AAU tournamnets at an earlier age. Also, the one letter rule is "stretched" a bit by some schools. Seems their interpretation of the one correspondence by letter is that the same "type" letter can be sent again and again! I suspect you've seen that as well! Also, lots of communication is carried on between the recruiter and the high school and/or AAU coach of the player. We've seen that recently with a coach of a sophomore player trying to work through the coach to set up an unofficial visit. As you said, sometimes confusing and certainly not as simple as letters received.

The KHSAA site for E-Town does show only 11 players. Having coached girls in games where the competition was very weak I know this is a tough situation, but I think I would have had my girls hold the ball after this thing got to a certain point. By the way E-Town had beaten Fort Knox once already this season..........score 75-26.
