  1. Moss had 21, Shrout had 16, and Davis had 12, and seven players had 4 or more for Boone. The best balance the Lady Rebels have shown so far this season. Elizabeth Switzer also showed some of her potential with 8 and a nice active job all over the floor. Point guard Heather Sandlin again handled the ball well for Boone and added several nice assists to their attack. For Scott the second leading scorer was Kraft with 9. Boone ended up with at least three starters and maybe four with four personals. Here is the box from the game: Boone Co. 70 Scott 51 Boone Co. 20 15 14 21 70 Scott 9 10 16 16 51 Boone Co. (10-3) -- Robertson 1, Davis 12, Sellers 4, Shrout 16, Browning 4, Sandlin 4, Moss 21, Switzer 8. Scott (9-4) -- Stinson 3, Kraft 9, Buntin 2, Tibbs 31, Taylor 1, Kuhse 5.
  2. That's good because I made the drive!
  3. With schools closed in Boone County for the day will games still be played as scheduled or are they postponed?
  4. Sydney scored 80 in three games at the Gateway Holiday Classic and has averaged 26+ over the last six games to raise her seasons average to 21.8 PPG. She is also averaging double figures in rebounding and is shooting 61% from the floor and 76% from the free throw line for the season. What a difference a year makes! And you're right about Nell. She moves on quickly from loses and uses them as teaching opportunities. By the way, Moss is now 9 points from 1000 for her career, which began as a seventh grader at Heritage Academy. Not bad considering she only played in 32 of the potential 57 games she could have played in during her two years at Ryle.
  5. I doubt that she was pleased........but her husband ended up getting the technical foul call! Basketball is a difficult game to call. I did it for a number of years and also coached girls at a very strong Church League level before West Virginia had Girls HS basketball, and I'm betting I would have gotten a T had I been on the Boone bench last night. I remember years ago when legendary coach Abe Lemons was asked about the idea of going from two to three officials. He responded, and this is a paraphrase because I don't remember the exact quote, "I don't like paying two guys to be bad so I certainly don't want to pay three!" Thought of that last night when Moss grabbed an offensive rebound with her back to the basket, turned to put up a 6- to 8-footer, and the ball didn't even hit the rim! Reason why? She got whacked on the forearm hard enough that you heard it! Plus it was in the open, up above evrything else on the floor and easy to see. You just shake your head and wonder what three officials are looking at when that happens.
  6. Actually the two teams played much the same as far as defensive aggressiveness. There was, from my obviously biased view , no discernable difference in how the teams attacked each other with perhaps a bit more penetrating on the part of Rockcastle. But not to the degree to cause a 39 to 9 imbalance in free throw attempts. Most of Boone Countys Moss' damage was done inside yet she shot only 5 free throws. The margin did grow some at the end when Boone pressed but there was a huge disparity even before that. In fact Boone shot 6 of their 9 free throws in the last quarter. I have no clear explanantion for the margin of free throws but I can't recall ever seeing anything like it before. And I'll add this........NO team wins a game where they are on the wrong end of such a margin.
  7. The Lady Rockets rode a three pronged scoring attack from Angie Lawrence, Jackie Alexander, and Sara Hammond and a incredible number of free throws to a win over Boone County in the finals of the Gateway Holiday Classic The final totals showed Rockcastle going to the free throw line 39 times compared to 9 by Boone County. The game started slowly as a defensive struggle as both teams played hard-nosed defense, Boone in a straight man and Rockcastle alternating between man and zone, often changing possession to possession. The first stanza ended 10-8 in favor of the Lady Rockets. Rockcastle stretched the lead out to 23-15 at the half, running off a string of free throws during the last 4 minutes of the second quarter. The Lady Rockets lead expanded to 13 points early in the third quarter before Boone's Sydney Moss began to assert herself. Moss had 10 points in the quarter, got on the boards hard, and assisted on a couple of baskets. Boone actually tied the game at 32-32 with 1:58 to go in the third before Rockcastle closed the quarter out with 5 more free throws to push the lead back to 37-32. Boone again tied the game at 37-37 on a three by point guard Heather Sandlin with 5:22 to go in the game, but The Lady Rockets parade to the free throw line continued and they pushed the lead back out to 10 and then 13 over the next 2 minutes. From there Boone had to gamble and that led to some easy baskets for the Lady Rockets and they continued to drill free throws. Boone never got closer than seven over the last couple of minutes. The game featured an interesting match up between two of the better players in the state as Boone's Moss, at 5-11, and Rockcastle's Hammond, at 6-2, often went head to head. Moss finished with 27 points, including 19 in the second half, to Hammonds 14 but I think Hammond won the rebounding battle. I was curious to see if the shorter Moss could shoot the ball inside over the long-armed, athletic, and quick jumping Hammond. She could and did. Hammonds did block one shot by Moss but Moss grabbed the ball back and powered it in anyway. Rockcastle was led in scoring by Lawrence who had 24 and Alexander with 19 in addition to Hammonds' 14. Boone got the 27 from Moss and 14 from Sandlin who continued to show solid play. The three high scorers for Rockcastle County made the All-Tournament Team and Boone placed Moss, Sandlin, and guard Annie Browning. The tournament was one of the best run high school events I have attended and the Montgomery County High School folks and the friendly people of Mt. Sterling are to be commended for a fine event. Rockcastle Co. 64 Boone Co. 53 Boone Co. 8 7 17 21 53 Rockcastle Co. 10 13 14 27 64 Boone Co. -- Davis 4, Moss 27, Sandlin 14, Browning 2, Shrout 5, Switzer 1. Rockcastle Co. -- Hammond 14, Alexander 19, Abney 5, Lawrence 24, Hunter 2.
  8. I think there were several factors in last night's slow start. 1.) It took a while for Boone to adjust to the "funky" defenses used by Franklin County used to try to slow Moss. That adjustment began in the second quarter and continued through the rest of the game. 2.) The loss of Sandlin for much of the second quarter after she picked up her second foul hurt. I thought when Boone was down just one at the half.....with Sandlin on the bench.....that that bode well for the Lady Rebels in the second half. The mid-court steal and basket by Moss also gave Boone a big lift going to the lockerroom. 3.) The really good outside shooting that started in the second quarter continued in the second half and was huge. Boone has not shot the 3 particularly well and is very capable, as shown last night. 4.) Defensive intensity picked up as the game went on and was really good in the second half. It made it very difficult for Franklin County to run their offense. Hopefully the slow starts will be less evident from here on out.
  9. Boone County advanced to the finals of the Gateway Holiday Classic to face Rockcastle County tomorrow night. The Lady Rebels rode a 24 point, 16 rebound performance by sophomore Sydney Moss and some solid outside shooting to the victory. The Lady Flyers played tough aggressive defense and the game was tight for a good period of the game. They led 10-6 at the quarter and 21-20 at the half and led by as many as 6 before Moss got a steal and bucket just before the buzzer. The third quarter saw Franklin County and Boone trading 3's and the Lady Flyers continuing to hold off Boone's charge. But the Lady Rebels jumped in front on a basket by Moss at the 1:17 mark of the 3rd quarter and never looked back. From the point at which Franklin County scored to lead 31-30 at the 2:11 mark of the third, Boone outscored the Lady Flyers 22-5 the rest of the way to walk away with the victory. Moss contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds during that surge. Franklin County used a box-and-one and a variety of other defenses to double and triple team Moss but she responded with an 11-15 performance from the floor and went to war on the boards against a Franklin County squad that had several players similar in size to her. The physical battle between Moss and Franklin County's Chelsea Craig was something to watch! Senior point guard Heather Sandlin sat out much of the second quarter after picking up two fouls but was outstanding in the second half with her floor generalship and also shot the ball well to finish with 9 points. Sandlin, Stacie Shrout, and Annie Browning each had two 3's and all were key baskets for the Lady Rebels.

  12. The Lady Rebels were led by Sydney Moss who had 29 in less than three quarters of action. Heather Sandlin added 11 points for Boone and handed out a ton of assists. This game was tied at 16 after a quarter as North Hardin shot the ball very well in the opening stanza. After Boone led 30-27 at the half, Moss took over in the third, scoring 12 straight points to break the game open. Boone will now face Franklin County tomorrow at 7:30 PM in the semi-finals of the Gateway Classic at Montgomery County High School. Franklin County defeated Casey County 53-45.

  15. In the first half of today's game Boone handled the Princeton pressure nearly flawlessly, passed the ball with precision, moved very well on offense, and got easy shots? In the second half they did none of that and looked tired. Pretty typical of HS girls basketball, particularly early in the season...................inconsistent. I've seen all but two of Boone's games and I see a team getting better and better, and I think today's second half letdown will be the big exception to the rule as this season goes on. When they are consistent they are hard to handle.
  16. Boone lead 34-21 at half but failed to meet the intensity of the aggressive Princeton squad and seemed to go dead-legged and lost on a Princeton close-in goal with 3 seconds left. Sydney Moss led Boone with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
  17. From the Lexington Herald Dispatch: No. 9 Elizabethtown 44, Highlands 41: Natalie Greenwell and Kaylyn Cecil scored 14 points apiece, and the Panthers held off the Bluebirds to make the quarterfinals. Adelaide Luckett added 10 points and 12 rebounds for E-town, who will take on Mercy Monday night. Bekah Towles led the Bluebirds with 14 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. 18. I saw that and knew that's not what I saw on the scoreboard. Here is the report from the KY Post: 11/20 Girls' Basketball: Moss' Career Game Lifts Boone Past Warren Reported by: John Lachmann Email: blackhawks911@yahoo.com Last Update: 12/20 9:29 pm Sophomore forward Sydney Moss piled up a career-high 30 points as Boone County drilled Warren Central, 66-35 at the Northern Exposure Classic at Notre Dame on Sunday. Moss also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Rebels, who have won five straight and improved to 2-0 in the tournament. Junior guard Stacie Shrout added 19 points for Boone County, and senior forward Joscelyn Davis chipped in with nine rebounds and six assists. 19. I liked Beal a lot. She has gobs of potential. Quick, pretty good handle. With playing time and experience I think she will develop into a fine, fine player.

  21. Here you go: Ryle 67 Grayson Co. 42 Ryle 15 8 22 22 67 Grayson Co. 12 10 14 6 42 Republic Bank Holiday Classic Ryle -- Oliverio 2, Cheesman 16, Meyer 6, Jump 10, Williams 6, Johnson 12, Crittendon 15. Grayson Co. -- Taylor 4, Johnston 8, Crowe 2, Gorby 11, Ashley 2, Raley 13, Pharris 2.
  22. Sydney Moss had 30 points and 10 rebounds (unofficial) for Boone in less than 1/2 of game action. She had 13 in the 1st period including a last second three, sat out a good bit of the 2nd, then scored 13 straight points in about 3 minutes, punctuated with another three, to start the 3rd and exited the game for good. Moss was simply too strong for Warren Central and was the beneficiary of some nice feeds from teammates as both Heather Sandlin and Joscelyn Davis found her inside with good position to score. The lopsided win gave Boone coach Nell Fookes the opportunity to give some promising young players some significant minutes.
  23. I didn't particularly listen but I'm sure she had some things to say! And it seemed to work.
  24. 26-22 at half as Boone kinda slept walked through it. Defensive intensity picked up for the Lady Rebels in the second half as they held HC to just 7 points, only 2 in the third quarter and the other 5 coming late in the fourth.
  25. Game at Ryle. Was told Sarah Beth Barnette had 31 for Lexington Christian. It's a crazy game.....girls basketball! Ryle beat Louisville Ballard by 9 at Ballard and Ballard beat Lexington Christian by 15 at LC. Now LC beats Ryle at Ryle. Go figure!
