  1. That would be a great research project! I'd love to see it myself. I'm not from NKY but I'm thinking such research should also include all schools since I'm betting all have had athletes that transferred in from other school districts.
  2. Syd is certainly happy with her decision. It has been an absolutely outstanding move for her, academically, socially, and athletically. And you're right, it is a dead horse, but it keeps coming up because of the veiled (sometimes!) accusations of recruiting by Boone County from various posters. I don't believe that is true. I've seen similar accusations in WV, always against programs who win...........imagine that! I have always contended that good programs, with winning traditions, a great coach and person running the program, will attract talent. But I can only address one case with facts. Syd was not recruited in any way by Coach Fookes. Syd's decision was about finding a new place to go to school and there was no contact at all with Coach Fookes until after the Boone County BOE declared her eligible to enroll at Boone County.
  3. Come on now, you know Coach Fookes would never "throw a game", particularly to Ryle!!!:lol:
  4. I just got home from a trip to the West Virginia - Pitt women's BB game with Syd and her brother, and a nice visit with the coaches afterwards, and I want to assure all here that Sydney was not at all upset with, or bother by the booing. But Shockey I do have a question for you. You sat completely across the floor from the BC bench, right? Just how did you hear all this "vulgar" language toward the Ryle players, in such an extremely noisy environment, when I was sitting directly behind the bench and heard nor saw any of that?!?! I know you and I had a very pleasant and cordial conversation after the game, but this type of denigratory, undocumented claim, as opposed to the booing toward Syd, which everyone in the gym heard, certainly doesn't do anything to quell the animosity his rivalry has seen recently. Rivalries are fine, and kids being kids in all this is to be expected, but I'd think adults would be looking to ease the tension not exacerbate it.
  5. No it is accurate. Moss had only 4 at the half, 19 in the second including 13 in the third.
  6. I thought the Ryle game plan was excellent with Dawn Johnson on Shrout. That took away Shrout as a 3-point threat and also took away one of Boone's best ball handlers. With quick foul trouble on two of Boone's other guards they had to move Moss out front to help handle the ball. That's where I think most Boone County opponents would prefer her to be. Ryle got great play from Jenna Crittendon and Ashley Cheeseman and strong support from their other players. Johnson also contributed offensively by hitting several short jumpers at critical times. Boone had difficult stopping Ryle's dribble-drive offense and as a result sent the Lady Raiders to the line a bunch. Wish I had a box score because I'm sure I'm missing someone. Moss had but 4 points at halftime but came out strong in the third to actually get Boone to a lead. Her last bucket to total a game high 23 was followed by the anouncement that she had hit the 2000 point mark for her career. Lydia Nash also had a nice game for Boone as she posted up well and contributed a bunch of rebounds. But Ryle continued to plug away, forced a bunch of front court turnovers and converted them to easy scores, and pulled away at the line at the end as Boone was forced to foul. As Papabear says, this was a great atmosphere for HS basketball, particularly girl's HS BB!
  7. I'm not sure about the video but they sure took a ton of pictures. I happened to be at Boone County HS the Saturday the two ESPN The Magazine photographers were there. They probably spent 3 hours taking pictures, including lots with Syd with friends.........in the gym, the halls, the Commons, all over! The photographers were cool, young guys who really interfaced well with the kids and Coach Fookes, both Coach Fookes in fact, and seemed to really enjoy their work. One of the guys was from England and he was certainly an interesting fellow. He kept shaking hands with folks and telling each one "I'm from England!", as if the accent didn't already reveal that! He was fascinated by the wide hallways at the school and the lockers. Apparently English school hallways are much narrower and do not have lockers. He said he felt like he was "in a movie" because that was the only place he'd seen the wide halls and lockers.........in American movies! He also referred to Syd's uniform as her "kit", which I had never heard before. It would be interesting if they, or the Rise people, who were there another day, did a video. I guess we'll see later if that happened.
  8. What's interesting is that I didn't think she was any more animated than normal when she got the second T. Sometimes you just get officials who are a bit more sensitive to being fussed at. When I officiated I worked a couple times (and that was a couple too many!) with a guy who handed out T's like they were going out of style. His ears were a little too large I guess. Officiating basketball is a tough, tough job and does get you a ton of complaints and criticisms, but you can't have rabbit ears. I generally let coaches have a lot of leeway because I knew they were doing their job when they saw a play differently than I. But if they went a bit too far I'd warn them that was enough. Only if they pushed that did I hand out T's. Really didn't do that very often because I could usually get their attention without being on a power trip. I don't know if I need thick skin or not but I do strongly support Coach Fookes because of what I see in her and her approach as good for the kids she coaches. That sometimes isn't the case with coaches I've seen.
  9. I hope it truly is all in fun because message boards can get way too edgy at times. It is tough to discern exactly what people are really saying and where they are going with their comments. Without "body language", and voice inflections, and all the other things that go with face-to-face communications, it is tough. Your response here talks about all NKY teams out of area, which I personally don't believe either, but until this response you have had a total focus on Coach Fookes and Boone County girls basketball (on this particular subject).....and that only, thus my reponses. That is where my thought of you getting off the "kick" came from. And I do understand the stomping thing and can see where those who don't really know Coach Fookes could get "stuck" on that aspect of her overall picture. Interesting story. When Sydney was still at Ryle, with no thought of going anywhere, much less Boone, we were watching a December tournament game at Boone County. Nell was being Nell! I hadn't seen that before and had what is probably most people's reaction. I turned to Syd and asked "Do you think you could play for her?" She smiled and responded "Sure I could play for her!" How true that has turned out to be! Now that it is a reality I've gotten to see the complete Coach Fookes. I see an extremely intensive person who is always pushing her players to be the best they can be. She is tough on them......on the court. Off the court I see a person who loves her players like they were her own and wishes for them the best, sports or otherwise. She goes far beyond the "call of duty" to help her kids....be it regarding basketball, other sports, studies, home life, whatever. I'm totally sold on her and her approach, and I guess that's pretty obvious! I'll be happy to entertain any "facts" you want to present in this discussion as it regards this big gap in officiating Boone County and Coach Fookes experience out of area (yeah I know you've now tried to switch it to all NKY teams but your purpose has been to indicate BC gets preferential treatment in the NKY area...........all one has to do is go back to your original post and the one in this thread). I've seen no facts from you so far. I hardly think I'm in denial. I'm simply using what I've actually seen in watching 12 Boone County games outside of NKY, including two in Ohio (in addition to more than that last season). There certainly has been no difference in the way BC has played, and there has been no significant difference in the way the game has been officiated in terms of foul calls or anything else (with one glaring exception from last season....and those occur on occasion at every level). THAT is fact......and hardly a "fairytale"! Again, I'll be happy to entertain your "facts" on the matter. All for the "fun" of it of course!
  10. Interesting! See my further responses below. Coach Fookes picked up a technical for challenging a call (I guess!) in the first half and another at about the 4:00 mark in the third quarter. This resulted in automatic ejection. I don't think any of the Boone County fans in attendance complained about the ejection........mainly because we weren't sure why it occurred. Coach Fookes seemingly was trying to protect her players, certainly the last technical when there were a series of undercuts by Mercy players on rebounds. I don't think they were intentional but it was fortunate Sydney Moss didn't hit the deck on a couple of those. Fouls were called on some of those but there was no effort by the officials to stop the tactic. I believe the fussing about that was what drew the second T. From what I could see the actions of Coach Fookes were no more demonstrative than those of a number of the coaches in the several games I watched. in fact the Mercy coach reacted even more severly later in the third quarter when BC made their run. He was warned, multiple times, and even guided back to his bench twice, complaining very vocally the whole time. But no technical! You really need to get off this "kick". You obviously don't know what you're talking about and are apparently driven simply by dislike of Coach Fookes, or at least her antics......pretty obvious!. As I said "in another thread" I've seen Boone play out of the area and even out of state and there isn't that much difference in how Boone games are called. If you'd like I'll even dig up the stats to prove that. To clarify that for you, what I'm saying is that their style of play doesn't change and the number of calls against them doesn't change. This tournament wasn't a lot different other than the technicals. Fact is it's tough for a non-Louisville area team to win here. That's what one should expect though, IMO. Mercy was actually the more aggressive team and probably got away with more than Boone did. They certainly won the game at the free throw line, going 32-37 for the game and making 14 in the last period. I don't know how many free throws BC shot but it had to be in the 20's, probably high 20's. The game was called pretty much the same way both ends and Mercy ended up with more FT's because Boone had to foul at the end. Had Boone shot their FT's as efficiently as did Mercy the outcome could have been reversed. But Boone certainly didn't have to change their style of play because they were out of the area. You also ought to read what Sparky has to say above! Kinda a different perspective from someone who claims no bias and actually SAW the game.
  11. Mercy..........25 13 12 25 75 Boone Co.....18 16 22 12 68 Mercy (18-3) -- Goetz 8, Ch. Roush 12, Faris 11, Hartlage 16, Miller 14, Richardson 5, Dircksen 2, Co. Roush 7. Boone Co. (18-4) -- Moss 21, Nash 4, Jones 5, Shrout 16 , Browning 9, Robertson 13. Boone is starting to get some balanced scoring and contributions from different players. Senior Kayla Robertson had a terrific game today, shooting the 3 well and getting some key baskets.
  12. Good game with margin swings of an early 11 point Mercy lead to an 8 point BC lead just before the end of the 3rd period, to the final margin. Anyone who is going to beat Mercy better not let them get the lead in the 4th quarter because the Jaguars simply don't miss free throws. At least the didn't today. They must have gotten 12-15 of their 4th quarter 25 at the line including, I believe, their last 10. On the other hand Boone County missed some critical ones when the game was still within reach. The margin grew in the last minute as BC had to foul. From the Louisville Courier Journal Mercy beats Boone County 75-68 in Girls' LIT semifinal By Jason Frakes The Courier-Journal The Mercy Academy basketball team outscored Boone County 25-12 in the fourth quarter and posted a 75-68 victory this morning in a semifinal of the Republic Bank/Coca-Cola Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine. 14. I know you have great interest and I can see you doing just that. And I see you as someone who has the experience to make some pretty good calls in that respect. Out.....I'm off to Lousiville to watch BC in the LIT.
  15. No doubt learning to defend on the perimeter will be a huge challenge for Syd at the next level, along with the conditioning aspect. I saw her go against some terrific guards this summer. And she sometimes had difficulty staying in front of several of them (as did most everybody else that tried to defend them!). I saw Moriah Jefferson, Texas guard ranked No. 2 in the 2012 class by Hoopgurlz, put a crossover move on Syd that was out of this world to go around her in a flash. I said "uh oh" but was surprised when Syd recovered and blocked Moriah's layup attempt from behind. Like a lot of "scorers" in HS she doesn't always defend as tenaciously as she can/should. But I think she'll learn to do that because she has the skills and will to do that. But I agree she's not going to be the one to defend some of the absolute "burners" at the DI level. I do think Nell is trying to help develop Syd for her future college position by moving her out on the floor. But I also think her handle is better than some thought. College interest went up significantly this summer as colleges saw her play out on the floor for her AAU team. Most I've talked with have no problem with her handle. The desire to defend is another issue but coaches feel that's a matter of application. In most college programs you defend or you sit!
  16. Are you talking to the same coaches I'm talking to?!?!?!?! Sounds like it. Lot of what you're saying is what they are saying also....."unique skill set", ability to play in different positions effectively, can score facing up or back to the basket, difficult to defend, strong, quicker than some believe, etc., and the southpaw thing comes into play as well. Other good stuff but I'll not go there. But then you've done your share of talking to coaches too!
  17. I kinda go by what top DI college coaches are saying about her..........sorta in line with your thoughts! And their opinions are pretty important.
  18. Wasn't there but word I got is Conner won by 1.
