  1. Johnson shows up on the roster I see on the Ryle KHSAA site. Stress fractures can be a recurring problem. Hope that isn't going to be the case for Jenna.
  2. Zuri is a definite asset for Boone. She's listed 5-11 but she doesn't look to be quite as tall as Sydney so probably not 5-11. But very strong, tough, tenacious. She is a good rebounder, jumps well, and has a nose for the ball. Solid defender. Not real polished offensively but can score in close and will probably get a few putbacks in most games. I think she will continue to improve as she becomes more comfortable with what Nell wants and with her new teammates. She had a tough night foul-wise last night though. Seemed like every time she moved she had a foul called on her. Some I understood, some I scratched my head. An example of that was when she didn't have inside position but simply beat the inside girl up to the ball for the rebound. Never touched the girl at all...........foul. Of course there does seem to almost be an automatic call when the person that doesn't have position gets the ball, even if the official has to "look through" one of the players to find contact that doesn't exist. I was a little surprised at the way calls went against Zuri last night as Cincinnati teams typically play a little more physical. No question Zuri makes Boone a tougher team than they were without her.
  3. Good battle last night at Colerain. The Colerain squad returns four starters from last year's squad which was pretty good and has at least two college signees in 6-0 Shelley Harper (Eastern Kentucky) and 5-10 Sheaira Jones (Lehigh - I think). The scrimmages were split two quarters by the JV squads, followed by two by the varsity, then a repeat for four quarters of action by both the JV and varsity squads. And the quarters were seven minutes versus eight for whatever reason. The varsity game was a defensive struggle for the most part and shooting was cold initially. Colerain led at the end of one quarter by a margin of 10-7. The offense picked up a bit in quarter two and after Colerain built a 15-10 lead Boone came back with seven straight points to go up by 2 and the "halftime score" was 19-18 Boone. The varsity squads then rested as the JV's played their second "half". The JV squads played very evenly although I've lost the actual score. The second "half" by the varsity squads saw Colerain outplay Boone in the "third" quarter, fueled by a couple of three pointers, to lead by 31-27 after three quarters of play. But Boone came out strong in the fourth, led by a tenacious defense to end the four quarters with a 43-36 margin. Through the first 5-1/2 minute Colerain had only a single 3-pointer and scored only 5 points in the quarter versus Boone's 16. This scrimmage was a bit different than others I've seen with the 7 minute quarters and the two quarters at a time format. It was a bit closer to a "real" game than last weeks scrimmage in that both teams used their main players more, although there were periods when both squads had younger players on the floor. Sydney Moss, after missing her first four shots from the floor (with at least two "rimming out"), was then outstanding in all aspects the rest of the way. She took over the game in the last quarter played, scoring 12 points including two and-one's. She finished the night with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 8 steals and 6 assists. Boone looked much better overall with better guard play, fewer turnovers (although there were some), better outside shooting from several players, and an excellent rebounding effort against a Colerain team that is physical and normally very tough on the boards. All that said, it was still a scrimmage and perhaps not indicative of how a regular game between these two might turn out. But I do think Boone showed considerable growth from their first scrimmage outing.
  4. I think she could play the point if she played there routinely and really learned the position. She has such excellent court vision and gets the ball to the open person with great passing. In college she would have to learn the speed of the game because it's a definite step up from HS. ESPN Hoopgurlz had this to say about her early this summer: Battle in the Boro-July 11: Becoming the poster child for the "power guard" position. Constantly on the attack with and without the ball. Very focused in her efforts at both ends of the floor and has no problem putting the effort out there from tip to buzzer. Scores effectively in the halfcourt but makes herself a factor in transition as well. The ballhandling is coming along and she more than willing to use it create looks and passes. Defending aggressively on the ball and anticipating well from the weakside of the floor. Impressive rebounder from the perimeter. (Lewis) "Power guard"......................interesting term.
  5. Kurt Curry INT return for TD for Boone. 21-0 now early in 4th.
  6. Still 14-0. Boone took 2nd half KO and kept the ball for over 7 minutes before giving it up inside the Lafayette 25-yardline.
  7. 14-0 Boone at half. Scored on a blocked punt recovery and a 15-yard drive.

  9. LOL! Yeah, that was a good moment but I believe the deal was sealed long before that. She kept it to herself because she didn't want to break to her ole grandpa! But it had to be her own choice and she made it. Good story about that hat. I don't think Tebow actually put it on her head but he did autograph it. When Syd got back home she ended up giving the hat to a family friend who is a huge Gators fan. She knew he would really appreciate it more than she so she gladly gave it up.
  10. I had just found out Friday that he was ill. I had been wondering why he was not posting. Clint and I were obviously on different sides of many "discussions" on here, but once we met face-to-face last season we were both OK with one another and there was a genuine warmth whenever we saw each other. I am so sorry to hear this and pray for his family members who are grieving their loss. May the Good Lord comfort them during this time. Rest in peace big guy. You will be missed.
  11. From other sources: Shelby over Sayre by 1 Tates Creek beat Collins...no final but Tates Creek was up big at one point. Pendelton Co beat Berea, supposedly in a fairly close one Anderson vs. Ryle posted above. Madison Central over Owen Co, no score. Feldhaus and Brooks did most of the scoring- Feldhaus 23 Brooks 14
  12. Hey, I understand..........no offense taken at all. I just wanted to put a little perspective on things. Scrimmages can be very misleading if just the score is used. Guess that's why they start each quarter at zero, to try to take away the idea of it being a real game. But it's human nature to add the scores up........I know I did! As to the eighth region, I'm probably not really qualified to state a favorite because I've really not seen everybody play, but if I was asked to pick I'd go with South Oldham because of Whitfield and Dye and their overall experience. But, as is the ultimate case in every region, it will be decided among the teams on the floor. Good luck to all!
  13. Well stated. South's defense was very good. Early on Boone struggled against their press even with the regulars on the floor. I suspect had that been a regular season game Boone would have been forced to use Moss to help break the press. They didn't in this case and I think Boone turned it over six times in the first three minutes. They eventually handled the press a bit better but South didn't employee it as much after the first quarter. No doubt the press will be good for South this season with the experience and quickness they have to use it. No. 34 for Boone is the transfer from Virginia (originally from NKY). She is still learning the Boone system and players and will get better as the season goes on. I have wondered where you were from, just knew you were from the 8th region and that you knew a lot about the Kentucky Premier AAU program. Wish I had known for sure and we could have met and talked today. I did talk with Jasmine after the scrimmage and congratulated her on her scrimmage performance and her signing with UC. Nice young lady and very pleasant. Good luck to the Lady Dragons! Looks like these two teams could meet for real if both win their opening round games at the Gateway Classic between Christmas and New Year's. Maybe we can meet and talk then!
  14. South Oldham did outscore Boone by 10 over the first four quarters of the five the varsities played and they are a very solid, senior dominated team that is going to be a tough out for anybody. They definitely outscrapped Boone for the first two quarters as Boone didn't seem to come ready to play. But, as is the case with most early scrimmages, there is more there than the the score. Boone coach Nell Fookes took the scrimmage as an opportunity to get some of her new players a real baptism under fire. She played with lineups a lot and, for some extended periods of time, had lineups on the floor with no more than one starter out there, sometimes with two freshman guards. The result was a Boone team that turned the ball over more than 30 times and didn't do much offensively most of the time. As an example of Coach Fookes' approach, her go-to-player, Sydney Moss, played less than a quarter and a half of the first two and had only 3 shots in those two. Obviously that isn't how Boone is going to play when games count. But South Oldham played it's starters much more than Boone and I don't think both Whitfield and Dye were off the floor at the same time, and both were out there most of the time. Whitfield is an outstanding player but it was Dye who did the most scoring damage for South Oldham in this scrimmage. She did pretty much what she wanted most of the time, taking it to the basket, facing up and scoring, and posting up for close-in baskets. But South Oldham's overall experience level with having seven or eight seniors was a big factor as well, particularly when Boone had several new players on the floor at once. To take nothing away from South Oldham because, as I said, they are very, very good, but the extra quarter had Coach Fookes keeping her most experienced players on the floor (as did South Oldham) up until the last 1 to 1-1/2 minutes and Boone won that quarter 17-6, actually leading 15-2 with about 2 minutes left. Boone's intensity was considerably higher in this quarter with the continuity of line up being a factor. As I started with, there is usually more than scores to preseason scrimmages. That said, I don't think either South Oldham's 10 point differential over four separately scored quarters or Boone's 11 point margin in the extra period tells it all about either of these teams as far as how their seasons will go. I think I would have to favor South Oldham as the 8th Region favorite based on what I have seen. Boone will obviously go through some ups and downs if Fookes chooses to play her freshmen a good bit, and I'm betting she will, but when the Lady Rebels stick to their main players with experience they are very tough. But the experience gained by the younger players may prove very valuable later in the season.
  15. And this one: Ladyhound Panorama Paris High School November 12 1:00---Rowan County & Highlands 3:00---Mason County & Lafayette 5:00---Paris & Powell County

  17. We will be there! From what I understand the signing will take place at 2:30 at the Boone County Gym. Of course I'm hoping they will practice after the signing. That would make the trip even more interesting!
  18. Kameron Schwartz pass to Bryson Thompson for a TD with 13.2 seconds left. Boone wins 28-21.
  19. That should be a good one. I'm hearing PCC is loaded with about everybody back and a couple of good transfers and that Ashland could be very good as well. If you are able to watch the scrimmage please give us a summary.
  20. Boone County will go to South Oldham on November 12. Should be a good battle. They competed at Boone last preseason and I was impressed with South Oldham, particularly Jasmine Whitfield, and I watched her get better all summer. South Oldham has a bunch of returning players. Boone also has a November 22 trip up to Cincinnati Colerain which should be a really good test. Colerain has four senior starters back from last year's team that beat Ryle by 16, and has really good overall size. That's a Tuesday evening but I'll probably make the 4 hour trip to watch.
  21. I had not heard about those three not playing. Hickman played well at times last year, seemingly getting every loose ball she was near. But the addition of Hill may have cut into her playing time this season. Harrison was a pretty good three point shooter and I had thought she might provide some spot duty help against zone teams. I think your starting line-up is likely right and pretty solid. I've been hearing some really good things about Popp. She is pretty good size for a guard and I thought, after watching some JV games last year, that she cmight really come on this season. Boone could go really "big" if Popp moved to point at times and Switzer came in at the 3 with Moss going to the 2. Of course the lineup you suggested could be the starters is bigger than anything the Lady Rebels have had in the past couple of seasons. They should be a very good rebounding team. Hopefully Popp, and the freshmen Ford and the younger Switzer, and perhaps Murphy, can help replace the 3-point shooting Boone lost with the graduation of Shrout and Browning, but I agree that Boone will harder to defend. I thought the problem last year against NCC was that they kept running three players at Moss and when she'd give the ball up the open players wouldn't take advantage of being open. Teams are probably going to continue to double and triple-team Moss, particularly out on the floor, so other players need to step up when she gets the ball to them. Of course there is another answer to that out-on-the-floor triple team but I'll leave that one alone and let it reveal itself if it has to happen. I thought Boone could be very solid again this year but the addition of Hill has me really excited and looking forward to getting things going. I'm ready for that first scrimmage in 11 days! I recently went to an orthopedic doctor and he says I need a knee replacement. I told him "Not til late March or early April, Doc, I'm not missing basketball season!"
  22. That was simply a way of leading into a little dig at the folks determining what the outcome would be of a game that wasn't going to be played. Of course I would have liked to have seen the game played (would have driven the 3 1/2 hours to see it since I couldn't make the first one), but once it's determined it won't be played, and fans of one team insist on wanting to claim some sort faux victory, it's time to answer back.....all in fun of course! "Quit"? Boone apparently didn't quit in the game that was actually played since they can out on the long end of the score!
  23. You know what they say opinions are like, right?!?! The season ends with Boone haven beaten Ryle. That's a fact, no opinion involved.
