  1. Marion first state team to beat Boone From E-Town News Enterprise Marion County’s talented trio was too much for Boone County’s one-woman show Saturday evening during the nightcap of the fifth annual Duke’s Sporting Goods Valentine’s Shootout at John Hardin. Three Division-I bound Marion County players – junior guard Makayla Epps (Louisville verbal commitment), junior forward Kyvin Goodin-Rogers (Louisville verbal commitment) and senior guard Bre Elder (Dayton signee) – combined for 51 points as the second-ranked Lady Knights surged past third-ranked Boone County and standout Lady Rebel senior forward Sydney Moss, 65-50. Boone County (24-2) entered Saturday with the state’s longest win streak (22) and was 23-0 against state competition. Moss, daughter of former NFL star wide receiver Randy Moss, finished with a game-high 25 points. Marion County junior guard Patrice Tonge drew the defensive assignment on Moss, a Florida signee who is considered a front runner to be named Kentucky’s Miss Basketball. “Syd’s the best player in Kentucky and she can score anytime she wants to,” said Marion County coach Trent Milby. “I told Patrice before the game to not put her head down because Moss is going to score and she’s gonna get hers. But I thought for the most part, Patrice did a good job of staying in front of her and forced Moss to shoot over her.” The teams were tied at 46 before Marion County (25-4) closed with a 19-4 run over the final 4:17. The Lady Rebels were 1-of-9 from the field and turned it over four times during the Lady Knights’ surge. “That was the best fourth quarter we’ve played in two years as far as executing and doing what we wanted to do and finish the game off,” Milby said. The run started with an old-fashioned three-point play by Epps, the daughter of former Kentucky standout guard Anthony Epps. The younger Epps scored her team’s first 11 points of the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 21 points. “We tried to get her to do that the whole game and for some reason, she does it at the times we really need it,” Milby said. “But we told her if you play like that the whole game, then 90 percent of the time you won’t have to do it at the end like that because we’ll be ahead.” Goodin-Rogers, daughter of former Hart County prep standout and Louisville fan favorite Tick Rogers, added 20 points. Elder had 10, while junior forward Logan Powell had eight and Tonge had six. Moss was the only Lady Rebel to score in double figures. Freshman guard Alexis Switzer added nine points. 3. Gotcha! Didn't mean (perhaps my wording wasn't the best) that you were dismissing her ability. My main point is that she has played more point this year and probably not a lot have seen that. I haven't seen Gayheart play. Maybe I'd agree with you if I could.
  4. I understand the thought of Sydney not being a contender for Best Point Guard in NKY in the context of the original question and in the context of how the question is being considered and answered. But.................... First off Sydney does not play point guard on a routine basis. She does play it at times and plays it very, very well. If she played there as her normal position I think she would be the best. I've seen her (and I obviously have the advantage of seeing her every game) make passes that no other guard in NKY, and very few in the country could make...........half the length of the floor, through traffic, pin point on target to a streaking teammate. She runs the offense as it is supposed to be run and gets it to the open player at the right time. Of course when she is there it reduces her effectiveness as a scorer because she becomes a distributor first, scorer second. She has great court vision, a key for a truly effective point guard. She handles the ball very well and is strong enough to protect it against defenders. Her quickness is much better than one might think and her strength in firing passes with either hand is unmatched in NKY. Point guard? No she isn't. Could she be? Without a doubt and her ability to handle the ball in traffic and find open teammates will be one of her strengths in college. From what I can find in researching available stats Sydney may well lead NKY in assists per game at 4.4. And I'm betting her assist to turnover ratio of 1.91/1 is probably the best among point guards in NKY as well. Again, I agree she probably sghouldn't be in the discussion because she isn't a point guard by definition. But for anyone to dismiss her as though she can't/couldn't play there says they haven't seen her play the point as she has more than ever this season. By the way, Boone played St. Henry on Tuesday and I was impressed by St. Henry's Annie Fugate at the point. She showed all the characteristics I think one would want in a point guard. So I'll throw her name in the mix since the original question asked "Who are some of the better Point Guards in NKY and why?"

  6. From the following from the KHSAA there may be a loophole for an 8th grader playing up on a 9th grade team and playing AAU ball at the same time. The rule says you can't do that "after enrolling in grade nine (9)" but it seemingly doesn't address playing up. Interesting! BYLAW 8. BASKETBALL/FOOTBALL CONTESTANTS ON BYLAW 8. BASKETBA /FOOTBA CONTESTANTS ON OTHER TEAMS, POST SEASON AND ALL-STAR GAMES OTHER TEAMS, POST SEASON AND A -STAR GAMES Any student who, after enrolling in grade nine (9), has been a contestant in football or basketball at any level (grades 9-12) and has eligibility remaining in that sport may not participate on any non-school sponsored team or in any all-star game in that sport or any variation of that sport from the first day of school through the last scheduled contest played in that sport (including KHSAA sanctioned postseason) by that school unless it has been sanctioned by the Board of Control. Following the team’s last scheduled game (including post season), there are no restrictions on play in that specific sport for the studentathletes.
  7. And any mathematical formula is put together and managed by a human being. To drop Walton Verona from No. 9 (tied) last week to not in the Top 25 says to me that there was either a mistake in inputting data or the formula has waaaay too much weight on margin of victory (or loss). To not have Walton Verona in there is absurd and gives as much reason to question the system as to question any "opinion" poll out there, IMHO.
  8. One comment I meant to make last night.........for a rivalry game like this one, I thought the officiating was as unobtrusive as any I've seen. I normally can go back and think of calls that, from a biased standpoint, were bad calls or no calls that should have been made. I can't think of any.

Sydney Moss had a dynamite 2nd quarter with 10 points to take Boone from a 10 -10 first quarter tie to a 30 -16 halftime lead. The highlight, which ultimate ended up being the game difference, was a last second three by Moss. With 5.6 seconds on the clock Ryle was at the free throw line. After a make the second shot miss was rebounded by Moss who quickly and calmly brought the ball up court, eyeing the clock all the way. She timed it perfectly and let go a squared up, on balance three at the buzzer which swished through. The 3rd quarter was a different story. After Boone built their lead to 36-20 with 5:14 left in the period, Ryle went to a zone press which Boone did not handle well at all. And after a few easy baskets off turnovers Ryle began to hit from everywhere led by Jenna Crittenden who at one point scored 7 straight points. The Boone lead had shrunk to just 41-35 at quarter's end. The 4th was a back forth struggle with Boone's lead shrinking to one point at 47-46 with 2:01 on the clock. Lydia Nash got a big bucket for Boone to stretch the lead back to three and then Moss hit a baseline drive reverse layup to take it up to five. Ryle cut it back to three and had a couple of opportunities to tie but couldn't hit the big one. Moss got big time help from senior center Lydia Nash who finished with 18 points and again Boone essentially won the game on the boards, out rebounding Ryle by a 35 - 22 margin. Moss led the way there with 12 boards. Jenna Crittenden had a really solid second half and led Ryle with 21. Dawn Johnson added 10. Round one goes to the Lady Rebels. The win runs the Boone winning streak to 21.
  10. Compared to the 9th! Whoa! You probably might consider stop shoveling......might get tough to get out from under! Let's look at some strength of schedule numbers.......and I understand they are from a computer program that someone runs and are subject to some degree of error but it is certainly more valid than hip shots. The Massey system, which I'll link later, has Bishop Brossart ranked number 54 in Kentucky which I think is remarkable. The system rates their schedule as the 86th toughest. Again, not too bad. But you compare the Mustangs schedule to those of the 9th region????? Let's see about some of those: Boone 5th toughest Ryle - 11th toughest Notre Dame - 9th toughest New Cath - 30th toughest Highlands - 15th toughest Holy Cross - 41st toughest Conner - 58th toughest Cooper - 75th toughest Hmmm! Even some from the 10th, which overall ranks poorly in SOS: Montgomery County - 39th toughest Campbell County - 74th toughest GR Clark - 80th toughest You didn't mention the 8th but let's throw them in a bit also: Walton Verona - 22nd toughest South Oldham - 17th toughest Simon Kenton - 26th toughest Owen County - 68th toughest Anderson County - 19th toughest It would appear you have vastly overstated your case on the schedule comparison issue, and "overstating" could be one of the reasons you are experiencing some of the board backlash, which is what SoftballFan14 was saying earlier. Hey Bishop Brossart is having a fine, fine year, a year to be proud of. And your enthusiasm and passion is great. But you might want to consider if your full bore approch to "beating the drum" for the Lady Mustangs is taking away from their accomplishments, at least among some in this forum, rather than enhancing those accomplishments. Just a thought. Oops, almost forgot........link to Massey System: http://www.highschoolsports.net/massey/state/Kentucky/Basketball/Varsity/Girls/2011/
  11. I am not at all surprised that NCC won, but I am shocked at the margin. Sounds like Walton Verona wasn't emotionally into this one and that's a shame. The margin really skews the perception of the relative strengths of the two. I've seen both from an opponents standpoint and, if asked to pick the stronger, based on what I saw and when ("when" is VERY important because teams, especially girls teams, can be very different game to game) I would have gone with WV. That said, I know how Ronnie Dawn can learn from a game and prepare his team so differently next time around. He is absolutely a master at that. But I wouldn't put too much stock in the game from either teams' standpoint. It is a single game, one that saw one team really ready to play and the other.........obviously (I think) not so ready. Both should now move on and continue to prepare for the post-season. As PaNDA says, look out 9th region teams, here come's Ronnie Dawn's bunch again. And Walton Verona will be fine. They need to get back to solid fundamental basketball and learn from a lesson from one of the masters. I suspect they will. Again, not surprised at the outcome but absolutely shocked by the margin.
  12. Boone led 16-7 at the quarter and 41-21 at half. Conner cut the lead to 11 on several occasions during the third period as Boone sorta fell asleep at the wheel. The Lady Rebels scored only 6 points in the period, all by Sydney Moss, and led by 13 entering the fourth on a late goal by Moss. The lead was just 10 at the 4:16 mark but Boone went on a quick 8-0 run to stretch the lead back out and remove any serious thoughts of a Conner comeback. Both teams shot the ball poorly with Boone being a bit better at about just 34%. Boone defended the three point line well against the Lady Cougars and Conner hit only 5 of 16 with most contested. The Lady Rebels dominated the boards with Moss grabbing 16 and inside players Lydia Nash, Zuri Hill, and Elizabeth Switzer combining for 18 more. Boone actually had nearly as many offensive boards as Conner had total rebounds. Moss led the Lady Rebels with 24 points in addition to her 16 boards, followed by senior center Nash with 14 points and freshman guard Alexis Switzer with 12. Switzer has really come on of late with her three-point shooting which is a welcomed additional scoring threat for Boone. Conner was led by Dawn Peacock who had 14. Peacock, who guarded Moss much of the game, had a tough night as she went down a couple of times after getting banged up. When I spoke to her after the game I noticed she had a slight cut under an eyebrow. But she kept coming back, battling hard to the very end. Nice player.....good player.....and tough as nails. I honestly expected a tougher game with Conner on their home floor, but the game was really never in doubt on this particular night.
  13. I have seen Walton Verona "up close and personal" a couple of times this season and I think they are really tough. I saw Monroe County last year and just couldn't see them as a top 5-6 team where.........somehow.........a couple of the computer rankings had them rated this year. I'm not at all surprised WV won. The margin is a bit of a surprise to me, but I thought Walton Verona was the better team.
  14. I'd say it was probably more likely The Sandman was in their locker room BEFORE the game. The Lady Stangs coaches kicked him out at halftime and had a little WAKE UP discussion.
  15. I don't believe so. I talked with a lady there who was helping select the defensive player of each game and she talked about the selection of all-tourney players like it was as committee selection. Nash has had a very good year. When both she and Hill stay out of foul trouble Boone is a very difficult team to compete with on the boards.
  16. Boone County won the 2012 Toyota Classic Girls Round Robin Tournament by defeating each of the other three teams in the competition. The Lady Rebels beat Clay County 51-43, handing the Lady Tigers just their third loss of the season, Franklin County 57-47, and host Scott County 57-38. Clay finished the competition at 2-1,while Franklin County was 1-2, and Scott County 0-3. Sydney Moss led the way averaging 24.3 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per game. Moss was selected as Defensive Player of the Game in two of the games and was selected to the All-Tournament team. Boone's Lydia Nash also received a Defensive Player of the Game award and averaged 13.7 PPG and 7.0 RPG but somehow was not named to the All-Tournament. Sometimes you wonder what the selectors are watching! Other All-Tournament selections (from memory and I may not have them all correct) included Alisha Mitchell and Cheyenne Madden fro Clay County, Malaka Frank and Dasia Kilbourne from Franklin County (both just 8th graders), Alexis Switzer from Boone County, and (here's where I'm not sure) Tereka Guyn and Audriene Christopher (?) from Scott County. Nicely run tournament and we met some great folks, but I do have a few suggestions for them that I'll try to pass on when I figure out how.
  17. Here is Cantrall's rankings for 1-16-12 and it has region rankings. I don't know if there are any others. http://www.kentucky.com/2012/01/16/2030418/dave-cantralls-rating-the-state.html
  18. From what I've seen on another site this was her "good" knee so this would be a second time. I concur fully with everything Sportslady had to say and my prayers are also with Megan and her family. May her recovery be complete and her future filled with good things (including no more knee issues).
  19. There has been so much said about this one I had to go watch it on I-High. Here are some numbers and some of my observation. First off, and huge for the first half of this one, led 24-23 by Conner, is that Jenna Crittendon picked up two fouls in the first quarter and basically sat for a quarter and a half. She is clearly the most talented player on the floor and her absence is a big loss for Ryle. She came back with a lot of energy and clearly picked up her team. Here are the foul and free throw numbers, totals first........fouls called against.......Conner 24, Ryle 14. At the half it was Conner 9, Ryle 6. Also of interest is that with 2:04 left in the game it was Conner 17, Ryle 14. Pretty even. Conner fouled 7 times in the last 2:04 in a futile attempt to catch up. Free throws......made and attempted, were........Conner 2 of 6, Ryle 26 of 32. At the half it was Conner 2 of 4 and Ryle 3 of 4. Ryle shot 18 free throws in the final period,14 in that aforementioned final 2:04. All that said, I don't think the totals define much about the quality of the officiating. The disparity comes from Conner fouling so frequently in the last quarter trying to catch up and, has been mentioned, the difference in style of play, Ryle often attacking while Conner settled for a ton of outside shots. I saw one obvious missed call when Crittendon crashed the boards and jumped on a Conner player's back, knocking her to the court with no foul called. But overall I thought the officiating was OK.
  20. Saw a nice 8th grade game on Saturday. Ockerman beat Holmes at Holmes by a 46-36 margin. Thad Moss led Ockerman with 29 points and came through down the stretch when Holmes made a charge to close the margin. That charge was a result of Holmes' relentless, double-teaming pressure that led to some easy hoops, plus the Bulldogs hit their only three 3-pointers in about a 30-40 second span! Holmes played without their center, who I understand is their best player. He obviously would have made it a different game. But it was high energy and entertaining with both teams coming in undefeated. Not sure but I think Ockerman is now 16-0 or 17-0.
  21. I guess that depends on one's perspective. As was pointed out, many threads veer "off-topic" and this one did somewhat as well. But the issue of a potential incident in the stands being avoided I suspect was of interest to many readers. And the discussion on officials was, IMO, not nearly as bad as in some threads. Again, I was more interested in learning what those who were familiar with NKY officials thought of the crew that worked the game. Message boards are always going to have parts that are of interest to some but of absolutely none to others. Has to happen with a diverse readership with diverse interests.
  22. !00% agreement from me. And the incident being discussed was the only negative one I'm aware of.
  23. Sorta in line with my thinking. I certainly understand the emotion of the game, anyone who sits near me (anywhere near sometimes!) can attest to that! I still feel there are boundaries that shouldn't be crossed even with that emotion and involvement in the game. But, when you take things to a nasty, personal level, that, IMHO, simply exceeds the limits of good taste. Even with emotions high there should be a modicum of decency. that is maintained.
  24. Oh I didn't think you were aiming anything at me, Clyde, I was just curious if you had a take on the crew. Appreciate your input!
  25. I'm curious, Clyde, is that tongue in cheek that neither side seemed happy or that they would feel that way with that crew? As I said, I know nothing about them and was curious if anyone else did.
