  1. This was ridiculous. Central ran a middle screen, the receiver caught the ball, scrambled around for a few seconds, lateralled to the QB, who then threw his 2nd forward pass during the play down the field for a TD. There are 3 penalties that couldve been called and the refs only called 1. Let me remind you that it was 4th and 7 at the Lafayette 25 yard line with 4:30 remaining in the game. Penalty 1- 2 forward passes on 1 play. 5 yard penalty from the spot of the 2nd throw plus loss of down. Result- Lafayette ball at their own 35, 1st and 10 with 4:15 or so remaining. Penalty 2- Lineman downfield(The original play was a middle screen, so you know lineman were downfield). 5 yard penalty, replay the down. Result- Lafayette was forced to accept this penalty because the result of the play was a TD and the refs didnt call either of the other penalties. Penalty 3- Offensive Pass Interference(Once again, the original play was a screen so you know the lineman were blocking downfield) Not to mention, when the QB was scrambling around after the lateral you know the lineman were blocking because he has to run, hes not allowed to throw the ball again. 15 yard penalty from the original spot plus loss of down. Result- Lafayette ball at their own 40 with 4:15 or so remaining. Central ends up replaying the down and getting a pass interference call on Lafayette which awards them a fresh set of downs and the opportunity to run more time off the clock with a 6 point lead. Lafayette ends up getting the ball back on their own 25 with 1:52 remaining. They drive down the field to the Central 1 yard line where Central stops Lafayette on 2nd down and goal and then time runs out. Imagine if the crew of refs had made any of the correct calls on the 4th and 7 play? Time wouldnt have been an issue. Or at least Lafayette wouldve gotten their 4 chances from the 1 yard line. It is very unfortunate that the refs allowed thier screw up to cost Lafayette a chance at winning this game.
  2. Nikeman49 on the 4th and 7 play in question, did everyone miss the fact that Louisville Central made two forward passes on that play? They threw a forward screen that was going no where and then the kid lateraled the ball back and then that player threw a second forward pass down the field. Does some rule exist or is there some situation that I am not aware of that would allow a team to throw 2 forward passes on one play?

  10. The annual heated rivalry will be deemed "The Roy Walton Bowl" this season. Lafayette seemed to hold their own vs Lex Cath last Friday night and Tates Creek played well vs Louisville Butler. What are your thoughts?

  18. I think Lafayette @ Tates Creek(The Roy Walton Bowl) could be a very competitive game.
  19. Best high school game...make that the best baseball game I've ever seen. Both teams executed flawlessly. 11 innings and only two AC errors and none by Shelby. It was almost as if it was divine intervention for Shelby to win this game. No matter what Anderson threw at them, Shelby always had an answer. Eric Standafer showed why he was voted all region and East/West All Star. He came in the game late and shut Anderson down for 2+ innings and then just ran out of gas after 6 innings in the first round of the tourney. He also hit the game tying HR and the game winning RBI in the bottom of the 11th. Congrats to Standafer....he seems to be a great kid. Also congrats to the Shelby players and the staff. That is a really nice baseball team. Go coach Roettger. This game, coupled with the district finals game, made 19 innings of even baseball. Shelby was just a smidge better this year. Good luck to the Rockets in their final year as the "one" school in the county. Also, for Shelby, good luck with the Civil War going on over there with the split. I've heard only great things with how well the two schools are coping and I've also heard everyone has been so encouraging and loving toward one another over there.
  20. Fantastic game between these two teams. I think they will meet again in the regional final next week.
  21. I doubt he changes much. He has been part of Raceland's success. With the loss of some OL and with skill returning with a veteran QB I would expect things to stay just about the same as last year. If they get a Denton/Carver combo again with a huge line look for the 2 back power gun and wishbone type stuff again... He already had full control of the defense so I wouldn't look for that to change too much.
  22. If a player is good enough, they will play college ball if they want to. If they are not good enough, they won't get the opportunity to play college ball. Many of these summer league teams, especially those who take kids from all over and have no association with a high school team use "we get kids seen by scouts and recruiters" as a tool to get kids to play. Many high school teams have their own summer team now and give their players the opportunity to play and practice with less cost than that of the travel ball teams. However, some club teams use "we get you noticed" line to convince kids to play making their parents think it is a good investment. I am not trying to discredit summer ball and how important it is to keep the kids playing during the summers as opposed to doing nothing. However, I have met many scouts and college coaches at high school games, district tourneys, and regional tourneys. To listen to some of these summer ball teams say that you don't get noticed playing high school ball is a complete lie and a cheap ploy to get a kid to join their travel team.
  23. Unfortunately, the popularity of baseball is a distant third to that of football and basketball in most areas of Kentucky. Many kids still play all through little league but in middle school their focus tends to go towards football and basketball. Especially in the rural communities. Go to a rural community on a Friday night during the fall and you will find a packed house at the local football game. The same is true during the winter for basketball. I teach in a rural community and I will routinely see crowds of 2000 people for a football or basketball game. As for baseball, we are lucky to get over 50 people for a home game. The larger crowds add to the allure of football and basketball especially to kids in the middle grades. At that age they tend to start looking forward to playing high school football and basketball more and simply choosing to not play baseball in order to focus on another sport. Thus leading to a high school baseball team with less athletic ability. Also, selfishness in baseball is growing. Many players quietly hope for the guy playing over them to fail so they can then get in the game. Parents are seeking out ways for their kids to transfer because their kid is getting "screwed". Parents and players are angered when they have to bunt, be pinch hit for or dh'd for, or when they have to play a different position. Some parents just can't accept the fact that little Johnny who pitched, hit 3rd, and played short stop for his little league team has now been reduced to the role of pinch runner/hitter or playing right field when one of the starting outfielders has to pitch. One thing parents need to learn is this, they can't say or do anything to make the coach like or play their kid more. However, they can say or do plenty to motivate the coach to take their kid out of the line up completely. Also, summer travel ball is becoming a slippery slope. Many kids are choosing to not play with their high school teammates during the summer and paying thousands of dollars to play on travel teams that rarely practice. The kids have fun and get travel to some different places however, many of these players do not develop as players due to the lack of practice. Also, some kids don't play simply due to the lack of money. Then we have situations in which some players are trying to use summer ball to get recruited by other high school teams. I hope these things will change for the better but right now this trend is growing.
