I have had the opportunity of watching Bryan Station for the least several years and what an admiral job this man has done!! What a great experience the kids at BS have gone through! His ability and leadership will no doubt be missed! :banana:

As long as the Fayette County school system is involved, don't expect anything sports related to be pushed forward!!

It's absolutely great for all these athletes to be selected and receive the recognition and honor but in does it seem unsettling that AC gets left off this list ??

John Hardin is obviously a good and talented program however they have not faced any team or beaten any team with a winning record . With the exception of Doss (5A) they have played 6A teams and I see this much closer than anyone predicts or thinks!

Regardless of who you cheer for, tomorrow has significance throughout the state and country. Does your home team have something special planned for this day which we , adults and players will always remember?

Dunbar won the big man challenge.

In Lexington, each High School has districts they draw from and the only legal way (and the Golfer can help here)is if a parent actually moves from one school district to another or if the student claims he is living with a guardian in another district. - Example would be if a kid went to Jesse Clark Middle school, depending on his address, he would either go to Lafayette or Dunbar. The only way he could actually transfer to Henry Clay or another school outside his district would be if his family moved or his guardian lived in the Henry Clay district - Complicated and I'm sure there are other ways around this...

Having first hand experience with two sons going through two different middle schools in Lexington, all observations are accurate!!!

All these methods of raising cash are great but a larger problem seems to be getting parents to step up an help with volunteer assignments. I'd like to know if any schools make this a mandatory requirement

Agreed - As far as recent D1 players from Lexington public schools, the following people come to mind - Chase Minniefield from Henry Clay, Taylor Klein, Robert Koteff and Andre Bryson from Dunbar - Who are we missing?

This is a complex question to answer and all points are valid in this thread but I agree with The Golfer on this – the Fayette County BOE requires any head coach to be a full time teacher or a county employee and the pay is just a stipend (Please correct me if I am wrong Golfer). Secondly, each HS team requires fundraising to support the program and Public Schools lack the donation power that are available in the private sector. I also believe that with the superintendents’ approval, a non teaching coach could be hired however the booster club has to come up with the funding and in today’s economy, it doesn’t seem feasible. There are very talented athletes playing for private schools and without jumping into another Public versus private school debate, these kids are there for a number of reasons. Each Lexington school draws kids from within their district so there is no movement allowed between schools unless a school fails to meet their education requirements. Other county requirements like weekly grade checks as well as other factors play into why the talent is not there in Fayette County. The bottom line is success for a program starts in the weight room and with sound teaching and coaching fundamentals which need to be developed early on and constantly improved on.

So it sounds "The Golfer " is really connected to PLD football - That being the case, all I see from "The Golfer", is nothing but negativity when it comes to Dunbar - I just don't understand the reasons for all this negative stuff. I agree Dunbar football has a lot of improving but in reading all "This guys posts" since the prior coach resigned for (family reasons), I sense nothing but hositility and acrimony. Is there another reason for THE GOLFERS"S hostility - It seems you have a serious axe to grind??? Where is the benefit to all the young kids playing football at Dunbar, when this appears to be nothing but a personal attack on the coaches and kids - and yes, I'm a parent and if I did not know better, I'd suspect you were attached to the program in years past - If you'd like talk further or meet feel free to send me a private email.. For all the other great posts and people on this BGP site, we enjoy your honest and without prejudice observations, both parents, players and coaches!! Not sure about the past coaching situation as I am new to the area - I do remember that the prior coach decided that spending time with his young family was more important then coaching and decided to resign in the April / May timeframe. My hats off the him as thats a very admirable decision to put family first . All Fayette county coaches are required to teach so theres additional work for any coach - Full time job teaching during the day, another full time job coaching sports, and then finding time to grade papers after all is done. The program then lost a major component of their running game when their star RB (and UK Recruit) who had 1200+ all purpose yards in 2007 didnt play. Coumpond that with a offensive line who was inexperienced and undersized physically and injuries to many starters. There were sophomores and even freshman at key spots on both sides of the ball during the year and everyone knows there is a huge difference from a physical maturity standpoint between a senior and a sophomore.

Fayette County has a parks and recreation system thar starts at the 7-8 age level and then ends at the 11-12 age group. Having gone through that with 2 sons, most of the kids will leave before the last year of the 12 year old group and go on to play 2 years of middle school. Some middle schools have much better coaching than others so in many cases a kid will not play much until the last year of 8th grade. Coaching fundamentals in middle school appears to be in consistent at best based on the number of coaches involved, ehich can range from 2 -5. When it comes to Dunbar, in past years the freshman were in most cases only an end to the financial needs and development was sporadic at best.

The rebels played a great game and are fundamentally sound. Turnovers played a key role early on and it should be a great game to watch next week. As a side note, the referreeing was absolutely atrocious for both teams. Good Luck Rebels and great game!!

I thought the old coach stepped down to spend more time with his family? Didn't realize that booster clubs in Fayette County do the hiring of all coaches

This is a great thread and brings up another point of discussion. In many blowout games, it seems the losing team continues to keep their starters in while their spectators and parents call for the JV to get in. It seems like a game of cat and mouse is being played between both coaches. Each team sets out to win but are there any unwritten rules as to when or who pulls their starter first

This is true - Jason Howell is a coach of high character, integrity and a person who demands accountability and respect of himself and his players. He is exactly what was wanted at this program by parents and the district.

Coach Howell has a sound reputation within the state and meets the educational requirements that Fayette County has for teaching and coaching. As far as the booster club comment goes as well, things are not always as they seem to be ...
