Thanks Jim; I had the player lists. Normally the C-J has separate stories on the guys and the gals coach-of-the-year. Didn't see 'em this year. The Herald-Leader lists its coaches of the year with the teams.

1977 it was. Jeff Lamp on the state champion Ballard team. Curtis Parker signed with Jacksonville...but was horribly injured in an electrical accident that summer and was left a shell of his former self.

Got to see him play in the region as a Junior. Sure was fun to watch. Wish him all the best!

Dragonfire would be an excellent choice. He and I have worked together occasionally and he is an absolute stickler for details...just the kind of individual you want for this kind of work.

Ma'am, I will echo suggestions made above...that more people than just Coach Wallace have a copy of the information. When a coach leaves, or when there is remodeling done, there are lots of details to be resolved...and lots of stuff tends to get lost. I had started a very detailed information package at the school I covered and it ALL got lost during a remodeling project. So sorry for your loss; I'm sure the passing of a spouse can never be fully appreciated by someone who has never been there. May God bless you lots!

Kelly was very upset about the way he was treated. After college, he moved to Michigan and didn't come back until the late 1980's. Someone talked him into coming to the state tournament. He was very quiet; tried to stay out of the way. Eddie Ford found him and talked him into doing an interview on our state tournament network between games one session. Wish I had had a couple of days notice to prepare: would have been a lot easier. As it was, I knew I was walking on eggs--trying to welcome him back, speak in generalities of his phenomenal career, and to not mention his last trip to the Sweet 16 in 1956. Since then he has opened up considerably, a book has been written in the last few years about him; and though he is not a "talker" by nature, he will speak to anyone who wants a conversation. Would loved to have seen him play.

I have always liked the series, but it appeared doomed when the Courier-Journal dropped its sponsorship...and the resultant dozens of columns and stories talking about it. Indiana has the Indianapolis Star still behind it and a couple of fabulous websites that promote its history. The Lions Club, try though they might (give 'em an A for effort!) just are not equipped to handle a state-wide deal like this. Couple that with 50% more people to choose from overall and many more metropolitan areas. Indiana has seventeen cities of 50,000 or more; Kentucky has four. As per this thread: as far as putting talent on the floor, I don't think a selection committee or try-outs makes any difference.

The older one gets, the more memories one has. Through 1991 (at least) the floor was completely ringed with broadcast and print media tables...from all over the state. And those were the folks who voted on the all-tournament team. Had to turn in your ballot at halftime of the championship game; winners were all announced (& pictures taken) during the trophy presentations.

Just came across this tidbit in a Mike Fields article after the 2013 final...the first one on Sunday afternoon. "Saturday night's semifinals, featuring Madison Central-Hopkinsville and Ballard-Montgomery County, drew 20,172 to Rupp Arena. Sunday afternoon's championship attracted 17,351, the largest attendance for a finals since 2009." So varying factors...as has been pointed out several times above. Proximity of the competitors to Lexington, who brings a crowd, etc. I don't remember the U.K. comparison as to dates playing vs. the state tourney that year.

He is the first to win as a player...and as a coach...at the same school. Bob Mulcahy played at Lexington Lafayette in the 1950's and coached at Louisville Seneca in the 1960's...and won state championships as a player and a coach.

Bobby Watson almost was. He played for the Red Devils as a Senior in 1948...one year before a championship...then coached them to the title in 1972 and 1980.

D.G. Sherrill has done a nice job coaching in Bowling Green. The Caldwell County grad has been there 10 seasons and taken them to the state tourney four times now. Last year he got past the first round for the first time...to the final four...before losing to the eventual champ. And now to the championship game.

If BG holds on, the last time two teams from this far West were in the final was 1976: 4th region Edmonson County beat 2nd region Christian County.
