Not sure about those rankings. Calvary will be good, and Villa is just too inexperienced.

Wow. I can't believe there are this many posts on Villa. OK, lets be real about this. Villa be be very average this year. They have Blake Bryan, who would either start or be a key contributor on any team in the region. After that, they are going to be hurting. David Schuh will be the next best scorer, he is a very good spot up shooter. The rest of the guys do have some talent, but will all be role players. Lets keep in mind that there is a good possibility that there will be games that they start 4 or even 5 juniors starting. This is the typical cycle that Villa has to go through every year. They can not just reload like many of the big schools. They just graduated 7 seniors who had a great year, but two years ago, those seniors took their lumps. The process repeats itself. Villa will be young and inexperienced. They will beat many small schools with the talent of Bryant alone. They will not be able to compete with the big guys this season. But... they will learn to play together and gain valuable varsity time that will serve them well when they are all seniors in two years. So, average this season, look out for them in 2009-2010. Good luck to them. The program is going in the right direction, and those coaches should be proud of themselves.

Ha. If the Villa coaches were old enough to remember Draud, I'm sure they would feel the same way. (Not saying Draud is old, just that all of Villa's coaches are in their 20's)

Cov Cath by 10. St. Henry will be prepared... but Cov Cath just has too much. I hope to see a good one!

I was very impressed. I follow DIII quite a bit through out the year and honestly did not think Villa had much of a chance. Villa played their hearts out. I thought their entire game plan was to slow things down (smart), but were forced out of it with the pressing and half-court trap that St. Henry kept throwing at them. Villa was up most of the first half until St. Henry went on a run near the end to go up 1 at the half. Everyone in that gym (don't lie) thought, "ok, here we go, now is when St. Henry goes on to blow them out". But it didn't happen. Villa opened the second half on something close to a 12-2 run (?). It was crazy. To see St. Henry have to call a time out being down 9 to Villa was something else. It really was a great game. Have to give a ton of credit to St. Henry for the win. It was very exciting and a great atmosphere for a high school basketball game. Faust really is a class act. Funny seeing all of the Cov Cath students helping out the Villa students with their cheers. It was just really what a high school basketball game should be, very entertaining. Good luck to St. Henry! Congrats to Villa on the great season, there were a ton of people who felt you didn't belong there, and you really did prove them wrong.

Great article. It's nice to see a tiny school get a little credit. Everyone knows they are not going to get past this week, but it is fun to see them there. They are a co-ed school with an enrollment under 200. They don't even have cuts on their basketball team, or any team for that matter. It's pretty unique. Anyone that comes out and wants to play is on the team. That has to be extremely difficult for those coaches at practice trying to deal with the not so talented younger players everyday. For them to even win a few games, let alone 15 and make the regionals is impressive. I know there are a lot of bigger and more talented programs sitting home right now, but the system is the way it is and Villa has made the most of it. Good luck to them this week.

I think you can throw Shumate from Beechwood in there as coach of the year. BTW, Villa's coach's name is Rob Starkey. POY should go to Sorrell.

I want to see how the Villa boys react with all those people there. You have to figure all of the Cov Cath and Highlands fans will be there for the start of this game in order to get a good seat (since they are not clearing the gym). And, you know that both teams will be cheering for Villa because an upset would ensure a trip to the finals for the winner of the Cov Cath/Highlands game. That being said, Faust is too good, and Villa can't compete late in games because they have a short bench.
