This is completely false. I just asked my son and he said only one player had quit and that was about a month ago. Harlan has around 30 players with only 3 seniors!:thumb:

Well,I sure agree with that. I have never liked excuses. The call that they are talking about was questionable but Ive been around this game long enough to know that it does no good to gripe about a judgement call because they are the ones judging. However, in a 7-0 game, a well placed hold sure can change the game and I understand people getting upset. What I dont like is telling the kids that the officials beat them because they learn to blame losses on other things and not accepting responsibility. I dont know how many holding calls Harlan had at Knott Co this year. Its all part of the game!!

I am so glad that McCreary started to put some emphasis in football and that is evident by all of the MC posters on here. Goodness knows that if anyone is due some success on the field, its MC. Good luck to you guys. I'll be rooting for you every other night except friday. The Dragons need this one also!!

Why was football put into a school curriculum 100 years ago to begin with? I mean, we know schools have bands. Its to teach music. Why was sports included? It was for physical fitness as well as teaching life lessons such as team work, discipline, work eithic, learning to deal with losses(because we will all have them in life), learning to win gracefully, and learning to set a goal and work toward it. If we keep this in mind, there is a lot to be said from simply playing the game. Winning is great and programs should constantly work for the wins but, by simply competing, there is a lot to be learned. My son was thrilled with the Dragons big win friday. That sense of accomplishment cant be achieved by playing video games all week and making fun of a losing football team!

You and I will have to agree to disagree and I disagree completely. Its not whether they win or lose, its that they choose to participate rather than sit back and criticize the ones that do. As far as Coach Elam goes, I dont know him and I hardly thing this is the place to talk about him if its going to be negative. Personally, I have heard good things about him!!

Unbelievable!! HS football is amazing!!

I was impressed with Pineville's enthusiasm and being winless. This was a very good game if you like defense. I thought they were going to say first score wins at one point. These 2 teams were very evenly matched and there were mistakes on both sides. The 2 snaps over the QB's head hurt Pineville badly but Harlan had one of those also. A huge point in the game was at the 4:45 mark in the 4th when Pineville went for the first down on a 4th and 8 at their own 20 something yard line and Harlan got the interference call giving Pville at first down at the 40 something yard line. The Dragons defense, however, rose to the challenge. Im sure glad that Pville had already used their timeouts or this entire series could have taken a different turn. Anyway, congrats to the Dragons on their first win and props to Pville. The Mountain Lions represented their school and community well!!

What a game!! Congrats to Pikeville on the big district win and congrats to Allen Central's players and coaches. AC has made great strides in that program!

Harlan just needs to keep the boat in the water because better times are ahead. This was projected to be a down year and they still have a shot at a home playoff game that will be winnable. If their district stays the same, Harlan will be very competetive in the next couple years. Hazard is like any other small school, they are up and down. Harlan has a good future with their feeder team and their 6th grade team is doing well. In short, lets not pull the plug on the Dragons just yet. Good luck to the Dragons and Bears tonight!!

This is a very good point. A lot of coaches have been saying this for quite a while. However, when faced with the kicking problem in HS, you have to take any means at your disposal for field position be it onside kicking, squib kicking, pooch kicking, etc.:thumb:

The Dragons get over the hump this week in their first home game against Pineville. Harlan has had a tough opening to a season. They were outmanned against Hazard and Lee, Va, both on the road. Against Knott County, Harlan made every mistake you can think of in a HS football game and many were made more than once, not to mention the officials sure didnt hurt Knott any. They reinvented the holding call. Yhis is not to take away from Knott County's win because they are much improved and have some good athletes. Anyway, its hard to base the remainder of the season on what has taken place in the first 3 games. I, for one, think Harlan has an excellent chance at a home playoff game and, for the players that read this board(the majority do)

I think 2 teams from wach district is fair. It allows for a good team to stump its toe one week and still have the opportunity to have a state championship as a goal. Also, as has been stated, some districts are just head and shoulders better than other districts so taking 2 teams is very fair. With 2 teams from each district, you are looking at 16 teams total from each class amounting to 96 teams in post season play. That cuts out half of the teams making the playoffs under the current system which would be a financial hit. In many cases, that 4th place team gets a better check from the opposite district's 1rst place team than any home gate they had during the season. This is a debate that has good points on both sides and could go on forever. However, I dont see it changing soon!!:thumb:

The official really doesnt have to say anything. If the widest receiver is off the LOS, the official will point a closed fist toward the end zone. If on the LOS, the official makes no signal. However, most officials calling HS games are pretty good about telling kids if they are on or off! Offside will know if this is correct!

Giving credit where credit is due, PSW plays a heckuva tough schedule year in and year out and this is from someone on the outside(I have no ties to PSW). Congrats to Mercer and good luck to PSW.

I agree and have said so for years but it seems like every year some 3 or 4 seed makes a big run solidifying the 4 team system. I have said repeatedly that if they want to de-emphasize the regular reason, just cut the season down one game and make everyone playoff eligible because practically everyone is eligible now!:thumb:

It was a good experience because they got to see team speed like few have in the state. Harlan is struggling exactly where they knew that they would struggle and that is in the secondary and offensive skill positions. They still have the capability of getting a home playoff game with wins over Pineville and Jenkins and, with a team with only 3 seniors, that would be huge. Keep working hard young Dragons and dont pay attention to criticism. Bobby Knight said critics were the type of people that hid behind a tree while the battle is taking place then they come out after the battle is over to bayonet the wounded!! Good job Hazard. Bring a state title back to the mountains!!:thumb:
