I'll agree with Slink, 14-13 Harlan in a classic!

What they are saying is that they are going to field a varsity team, they just arent going to play the district teams assigned by the KHSAA. In doing this, they become ineligible to compete in the state playoffs. When you field a varsity team and choose to sit out of the district, it is a 4 year commitment. I remember Lawrence County doing it several years back and it worked out very well for them. The first year the didnt compete for a championship they went 0-11, second year they were 3-8, third year they went 6-5, and the fourth year of their commitment they went 11-0. They re-joined their district the next year and were very successful for years following. *Dont quote me on those records for Lawrence County....Im not a Lawrence fan so they may not be exactly correct but they are very close if not right on!

Looking at it from the defensive side, Bell County gave up 21 points and one of those td's came from the offense. I know their schedules differ greatly, but regardless, Bell has a great defensive team. Playoffs will be interesting.

After having seen Hazard last year and this, they just seem to be missing a little something that they had last year. They still have great speed and a good QB but it seems like one cog is missing from the machine they had last year. However, they are still a great team and I hope they can bring one home to the mountains. Good luck to Hazard, Pikeville,Lynn Camp, Harlan, Allen Central, Paintsville, Williamsburg, and any other mountain team that I left out. We need a Class A tropny in the mountains for a change!

I cant believe you would question my always loveable disposition!! Looking ahead is one thing....letting the kids look ahead is another. However, in the playoffs, you need to look ahead for film purposes. Swapping the last 2 games with your opponent is ok, but I always wanted as many as I could get!

This is a good game for both Harlan and Clay to prepare for the playoffs.By the way, I saw in the Courier-Journal that, by their rankings, Harlan will be a one point favorite over Allen Central in the first round and not a big underdog tp pikeville in the 2cd round. Wouldnt it be amazing to be playing for a regional title in 3 weeks?

I think you may be right about JC. I havent seen them nor do I have a dog in the fight but, football people that I respect say that JC may have the best team the mountains have seen in a few years. I know thats a strong statement...I didnt make it. I am really wanting to see them!!:thumb:

You can do practically any drill in uppers that you can do with full gear except wide open scrimmage. As to being competent in the fundamentals so you dont have to do them anymore, you wont be competent long if you dont. In uppers, you still do your form tackling drills, interior line drills, sled and dummy work, pass skelly, play timing, defensive pursuit,etc. The team should understand that just because we arent in full gear doesnt mean it isnt a work day. If anything, we are going to work harder!

Congrats to Perry Central. It sounds like Harlan finally got the offense going a little. Gets our hopes up for the playoffs. Good luck to Perry Central the rest of the way!

Quite often, coaches like Glaser, who do a tremendous job every year, get overlooked because of the constant success they have. I didnt realize that in his distinguished career, he had never won the state COY award. He is undoubtably a strong candidate. We could start every season with St. X, Trinity, and Highlands coaches as strong candidates and never be wrong and this is from an Eastern Ky guy!:thumb:

Obviously, you all are correct in that lack of conditioning and improper technique are definitely factors leading toward injury. However, I have seen years when the same coach had numerous injuries and other years hardly as much as a hang nail. Just like in life, there is luck involved. If you think conditioning is the main factor, think about the times that teams lost the obviously best conditioned athlete on the team to injury. I do think that the way you practice comes into play.

Harlan had 313 yds rushing with 20 first downs. Jr TB Andrew Link had 245 yds rushing on 32 carries for 4 TDs. The defense held Jenkins to 62 total yds with only 24 yds on the ground. Jenkins had only 17 kids dressed. I have a deep admiration for those players on the field representing their school and community. With the numbers that Jenkins has, they are winners for taking the field. Good Job!!:thumb:

Id like to see it too but he doesnt care. I drilled into him since he was old enough to walk that football was a team game and all that mattered was the team doing well. He would much rather get the win this week. If they are forunate enough to win, they have a good shot at Allen Central at home. Overall, that district is down a little although Pikeville has played a killer schedule!!

You might want to check again because Im almost positive that Cawood beat Lincoln Co in the opening round in 1982 and then got beat in the 2cd round. I believe that was the last year of the crazy sub-districts. In 1981, Cawood and Lincoln both finished undefeated ranked #1 and #2 in the state and had to play in the first round.

A win vs. Jenkins wont "make their season." Harlan's players and coaches know fully well that this season has not been the type of season that they wanted or have come to expect over the years. It will be, however, a little vindication of a tough non-district schedule with a team that has only 3 seniors, only one of which played 4 years. As far as them having similar programs, look at the history of the 2 teams and I think you will see that Harlan has enjoyed decades of good football. Harlan simply played the hand they were dealt this season, and a home playoff game would be a nice reward for continuing to fight when they could have folded their tents. Unfortunately, this is not a video game that you can hit "replay" when things arent going well and this season certainly isnt "living the dream." I took the tone of your post as sarcastic with faint praise toward Harlan. If that wasnt the case, I apologize up front!

Watusi, other people have told me that JC is better than they were last year also. If that is the case, havent they been flying under the radar a little even with being undefeated with a tough schedule? How far can they go in the playoffs, IYO??

The Evarts win over Mboro was in 1990. Brad Kirby also made the big stop inside the 5 yard line to seal the game. Mboro beat Evarts 7-3 in 96. I could have sworn that Harlan beat the Jackets in 96. Mabey 95?
