Injuries in Football

Featured Replies

Can someone explain to me why some teams have more injuries than other teams?

1.Luck

2.Strength and flexibility

3.Practice intensity

Could be any number of reasons — bad luck, bad technique and bad scheduling are just a few that come to mind.

Being hesitant, being in the wrong physical position to make a play, and not being in the best physical condition to play. Football is a violent sport, the players are getting bigger and stronger. Injuries are a part of the game, sometimes a player does everything to the best of his ability and still gets injured. Ther are times that injuries become self imposed because the player doesn't hydrate, rest, nourish, or condition their body properly.

Sometimes you just get unlucky, other times you make yourself unlucky with poor preperation or play.

I have been waiting for someone to bring this up, though it is very true that Football is a very violent and aggresive sport, I have to agree that one of the biggest contributing factors to the amount of injuries is directly related to the improper or lack of conditioning and preperation. Today's High School Coaches and I speak mostly of the New generation of Coaches spend little or no time at all thru the week stretching and conditioning their players because and I quote "it is a waiste of valuable time" They for some reason feel that the 15 to 30 minutes it takes to properly stretch the muscles and ligaments in our childrens or grandchildrens body is a waiste of their time. The additional 15 minutes it would take to condition our players would also cut into their "valuable time". It's funny to me we will take our teams to camps and run them to death, till they puke or almost pass out, for 3 to 4 days, but when we get home from camp we dont do anymore conditioning. So if your team seems to be injury prone take a look at their weekly practice routine and you may find your answer.:thumb:

Certainly a lack of preperation and half speed play account for a lot of injuries, I to believe that some teams do not condition properly or stretch properly before activity. Running is just running if there are not other drills or exercises are not mixed in.

Very well spoken I too think that the basics of conditioning and other forms of football have been forgotten I for one know that Greenup county in no way does the right conditioning they don't even practice hitting. The coach seems to think this is something they should already know, but the truth is it is vital for the teams to do more than just run plays to be ready for the games.

All of the above are good responses. Also, I have always felt if you fear getting hurt and play timid, you run a much higher risk of getting hurt.

I agree on what you say.I was fortunate enough to have had some good coaches who preached about it always.Play the game 110% and it would keep you from getting injured .

One example the player decides hes out of the play and takes a break from the backside block, the fake he should carry out, downfield block , something that will make him a target standing around with his mind completely off the game, then comes that big decleater that could not only hurt you,but one of your team mates.

Obviously, you all are correct in that lack of conditioning and improper technique are definitely factors leading toward injury. However, I have seen years when the same coach had numerous injuries and other years hardly as much as a hang nail. Just like in life, there is luck involved. If you think conditioning is the main factor, think about the times that teams lost the obviously best conditioned athlete on the team to injury. I do think that the way you practice comes into play.

I am not disagreeing that what you say happens, because I am sure it does! However, there are time that it just seems like the injury bug just hits you. I consider myself old school and we tend to put a big emphasis on conditioning even now in the 10th week we take a good 20-30 min to stretch and we have 3 different periods of conditioning throughout practice. But yet we have 10 players on the DL at this time and 3 of them account for 90% of our scoreing. However, our best athlete was injured away from the game of football and we had no control over that situation. Bottom line we are just having a bad year where injuries are concerned. Most years we have very few if any injuries. Chaulk this season up to bad luck!

Also, not all injuries are the players fault...another player taking a play off is a liable contributor. I hate to even say but not every kid out there is there for the right reason, or the mosst able body to play the position.
