I'm not saying we shouldn't. I would like reasons why it's such a solution to our problems. I just find it hard to believe that it's a huge financial windfall.

 

I've explained to you very plainly. Some people enjoy gambling, just as others enjoy other leisure past times. Again, I'll ask - why not, even if you thought (however absurdly) that it wouldn't result in a single penny or job in Kentucky? I can attend basketball games, baseball games, horse races, NASCAR races, concerts, plays, the ballet, I can hunt or play golf...why can't those that like to spend their leisure money and time gambling do so if there is a large enough majority in the state that say go for it?

 

I don't gamble. I've been to a couple of casinos with my stepmom, who does like to go. I've never played even one slot. However, my step mom works hard as a nurse. She and my dad have raised five kids, been great grandparents, don't spend their leisure money on sports or collectibles. My step mom likes to gamble, dad likes to camp and fish. He goes to the casino with her once a month, she goes camping and fishing with him in the summer several times. When they come to visit me, dad can go fishing on my neighbor's farm, but they have to drive forty minutes to Belterra to go to a casino.

I'm not talking about gang warfare I'm talking about a good old fashion duel. What if the people want it? At a minimum I want it to be brought to the people to vote on it.

So the lottery has fixed nothing. These programs are still underfunded. All the lottery has done is take money out of indivuals pockets and put it in the hands of the state where it continues to be mismanaged.

 

So providing funding the benefits and retirements for teachers police officers and others is providing nothing? You REALLY believe that is nothing?

Protecting the equine industry by using casino revenues to beef us purses and help breeders is a (the?) goal.

Look I understand what you are saying but an argument can be made that gambling has some negative effects on the community.

 

Economically speaking Michigan and Illinois are two states that allow casinos and each are struggling. I just don't see how preying on the stupidity of people is a good long term economic solution.

You can't compare Michigan to Kentucky. They are struggling because of the collapse of the auto industry. You simply cannot compare. We in Kentucky face completely different challenges, one of the biggest is the decline of the horse industry...our signature industry. Breeders are moving operations out of Kentucky, top trainers are avoiding the lower purses of the Kentucky tracks. Not only is casino gambling in Kentucky questionable for the future, horse racing, breeding, training...all are becoming more and more questionable. The loss of horse racing means the loss of jobs...grooms, hot-walkers, stable hands, trainers, jockeys, bartenders, food servers, ushers, ticket takers....The loss of breeding operations leads to loss of jobs....grooms, hot-walkers, stable hands, equine veternarians, tour guides, family operators, tour companies, food servers....The loss of a signifcant portion of the above leads to loss of revenues at attractions like the Kentucky Horse Park, the Kentucky Derby Museum. The decline of the equine industry in Kentucky is far-reaching in consequences.

 

And I'm still waiting for someone to come up with solutions that they think would be better than casino gambling. Mtnref gave a couple. Who's got others?
