My feeling is casinos will bring more problems than solutions.

 

We already have all the problems of gambling. What we don't have is an ability to divert some of the money Kentuckians are already spending at casinos toward addiction programs (as well as to pay for our roads and schools, you know, instead of Indiana's). As a state, we have all the problems and none of the benefits. Getting into the casino game helps level the playing field and stops neighboring states from preying upon us.

This issue is a no brainer, not allowing casino gambling in KY doesn't prevent 1 Kentuckian from gambling. Is there anywhere in the state that is more than an hour drive from a casino? This time next year there will be 2 within a 20 minute drive of where I live and if you push that out to 2 hours there will be a half dozen. Casinos are now present in every border state so by KY not having them we are simply watching revenue from our residents leave to our border states. It is a big time case of cutting off our nose to spite our face. It's sad that such poor leadership is present especially given the monetary relationship that has been present between the Indiana casinos and David Williams.

Chili's looking to locate a unit.

Plans underway for a civic/community center to attract mid-size conventions.

Ivy Tech just opened a satellite campus in town to focus on re-training folks from a manufacturing background in culinary arts, hospitality services, medical careers and business careers.

Secondarily, I just left an Executive meeting, in which the defeat of the Kentucky initiative was literally cheered.

Ashland is a town of 21,000 people and we have 5 Mcdonald's, an Outback, O'Charley's, a Community College, new roads, Applebee's, Ruby Tuesdays, a new riverfront, two recently renovated bridges, 2 new fire stations, a brand spanking new police headquarters, a new high school currently under construction, 14 Mexican restaurants, 7 Chinesse buffets, a hosipital that does more heart proceedures and any other in the state, and a recently renovated Paramont Arts Center.

 

We manage all of this without a casino.

 

Point your eyes south of Ashland and look at the growth of Pikeville. UPike is on the verge of becoming a state university, a brand new Civic Center, new highways, and an expanding medical center. No casinos.

 

Look for what it's worth I hope all you guys in the big cities get your casinos if it makes you happy. However, if you think its all a bed of roses you are sadly mistaken. Take a trip to Shreveport or walk 1 block of the boardwalk in Atlantic City.
