NewCath / Brossart "feeder parish" Debate

REALLY????? These parents are going to be sending thier children to NewCath no matter what, so if this is the way around having them participating for the high school they will be attending why not do it. Newcath has ZERO problem with kids that are in thier so called "feeder" schools playing for Brossart, in fact they encourage them to. However Brossart has a HUGE problem with it, these kids were NEVER going to attend Brossart so why are THEY always crying about it.

As a matter of fact an 8th grader at Holy Trinity in Newport, who was one of the better players on the freshman team last year, informed the coaches that she was going to Notre Dame for high school. They told her she could play, but if she would like to tryout for Notre Dame's freshman team this year they had no problem with it, SINCE THAT'S WERE SHE IS GOING TO H.S.. She is now playing for ND and Newcath is not crying one bit.

Talked to this girls parents today at the St. Therese basketball tourney and was told she made the ND JV team.

How about following the rules instead of inventing new ways to get around them? If the rules need to be amended or changed, so be it. There's proper ways to do that. Of course NCC doesn't have a problem with someone leaving NCC for NDA . . they're not going to fight that . . it would be the pot calling the kettle black.

And they don't have a problem with them leaving for Brossart either.

Sorry guys - only drink the Blue and White (CCH, TMC, UK, XU). Love my special CCH Jim Beam collector's edition!!!

You've been drinking the Blue and Gold Kool-aid if you believe that!!!

If we cringe a bit when a Public school refers to a kid who chooses to attend a private school after attending public schools up to that point as "our kid", is there any difference when a kid from a kid from a catholic elementary or middle school chooses to attend a high school that there school doesn't feed? You either like kids having the ability to choose or you don't.

Further it has been stated over and over that catholic schools have to "recruit" or at least attract kids in order to survive; however, is it somehow offensive if a one catholic school does that at the expense of another?

Brossart loses more kids each year to CCHS than they do to NCC or any other school in the area. So why aren't they doing more to pull those kids in instead of worrying about the handful of kids that choose NCC over Brossart? I can tell you that on average, Brossart loses no more than 4 kids TOPS to NCC from St. Mary; and those kids are usually a product of NCC and were planning on going there regardless. And what does Brossart do to pull those kids back to them? No one called me when my child chose NCC to tout why Brossart would be a better choice. So what are you doing about it besides crying foul?

This isn't a public v private debate. It's about NCC having a "playbook" on how to get around the feeder school rules, and families being disingenious when joining a parish. There is a defined feeder school pattern - follow it. If you know your kid is going to NCC, they should attend an NCC feeder school. Allowing familes to become members of only 1 parish would end most of this. Go add up the players on NCC's sports teams that didn't go to a feeder school to see why they don't want it stopped. The latest ACT averages from the Diocese last fall had BBHS way ahead of NCC.

There are a lot of kids that go to NCC from St. Joe's in Cold Spring. Believe it or not, there are actually kids that decide to go to NCC in the 7th or 8th grade and have no affiliation with NCC. Do you really think their parents need to withrdrawal them from St. Joe's and send them to an NCC feeder school? There are many kids from St. Joe's that never play on an NCC team while they are in grade school.

Even the families that think their kids will probably eventually go to NCC may have chosen to live in "southern" Campbell County because they wanted to live in a newer subdivision or build a new house - these options are very limited in the area of NCC's feeder schools. They send their kids to St. Joes' or St. Mary's because of proximity and maybe the benefit of bus service. There are no "rules" that you cannot attend a high school outside of your feeder high school. If NCC lost all of the Wilder, Highland Heights, Cold Spring, Alexandria, etc. kids they would be hurting - the diocese would not allow this. Even if some sort of additional fee was imposed on families whose kids enrolled outside of their "district" high school, I don't think it would change anything.

This isn't just a sports issue, Brossart has an problem with all these kids going to NCC anyway. I just don't understand why anyone would even care that a 13 or 14 year old who will never attend their high school is playing on a Freshman team at NCC. I think some people need to worry more about why they can't attract more kids to their high school.

And not every single kid that goes to NCC has some relative or allegiance to NCC, they decide to attend NCC because they feel NCC is a better school or better fit for them than Brossart.

Well said lawildcat. I agree. :thumb:

I have a daughter in a similar situation so I emailed the assistant superintendent of the Diocese. He says that a 7th/8th grader can only play at the school that is aligned with the grade school. He said that if a child attends a feeder school for Bishop Brossart they can play for them but not for Newport Central Catholic regardless of what parish they are members of.

I'm not trying to make this a public vs. private debate. I'm simply pointing out that, at least from a St. Mary perspective, you have a large # of kids who went to a catholic grade school for 8 years and now are choosing CCHS, a public school, over going to BBHS.

BTW, if I had known it was so easy to just join another parish so my child could have played up at NCC, I'd have been back at St. Thomas so quick it would have made your head spin. You see that as a problem; I see it as a nuisance to do so but a benefit to allowing my child to get a head start on her sports career at the high school she chose to attend. Why would she have played up at BBHS and taken a spot on a team when she had no desire to go there for high school? And why would BBHS have even wanted her there knowing she had chosen NCC over them?

Right. Those are the rules. Please tell him that they are being broken every fall, winter, and spring of the school year.

Obviously, kids can go to whatever HS they want to. We're only talking about kids playing on a HS team while in grade school.

If they found a loop hole in the rule change the rule. Note Brossart has 1043 kids to pick from NCC has 785 to pick from, maybe St Joes should go to NCC.

That doesnt make alot of sense when the numbers would then just reverse !!!!!!! Sounds like NCC just wants ST. Joe's and doesnt care about numbers !!
