NewCath / Brossart "feeder parish" Debate

Featured Replies

My question is why they don't just go play at the high school they want to attend? There are NO DISTRICT FEEDER PARISHES as of a few years ago!!!!!!! Your current parish does not dictate where you have to attend high school and the tuition is the same for everyone - there is no out of district tuition and/or requirements anymore. Once people accept this, then all these points, arguments and the SILLINESS goes away.

You've been drinking the Blue and Gold Kool-aid if you believe that!!!

Yes there are, and they are clearly defined. Tell Dave Otte at St. Henry that there are no district feeder parishes and see the response you get. St. Henry and CovCath have similar issues to BBHS and NCC. We (Brossart) have allowed St. Joe, Cold Spring to become a "swing parish" becasue we are reasonable and realize that in that parish there are many deep-rooted affiliations with NCC that will never be overcome through regulation of any degree, and we respect that. With that being said St. Joe, Cold Spring is a Brossart feeder parish and NCC cannot actively recruit Bluejays.

As I stated in my previous post, I endorse a waiver system where students from BRossart feeders could have a case review for each instance of wishing to play at NCC while in grade school, and each case could be approved or disapproved on its individual merits. Would solve a lot of paperwork at St. Therese!

Except when they tell you they are going to NEWCATH for high school.

I remember an 8th grade baseball player competing on the Brossart freshmen baseball team two years ago, who was openly clear about his intentions to attend NCC. We had a golfer from St. Joe, Cold Springs last year compete on our varisty golf team (not MacDonald) who was open about his intentions of attending NCC - SO it isn't an open/closed situation, and may vary from one sport to another.

I remember the baseball situation quite clearly because specific parents of Brossart freshmen were upset that 8th graders from our feeders were playing ahead of our enrolled, tuition-paying freshmen, and one of them was openly committed to NCC.

Everything above is a problem that each high school's administration needs to handle - if they are allowing it, then they cannot complain about it.

Straight from the St. Pius Bulletin - obviously there is a discrepancy in the way each high school views the "district" boundaries and "feeder" school definitions. Personally, I agree with other posts that they don't exist if an 8th grade has registered with a certain high school and since there is no out of district tuition:

Covington Catholic’s Middle School Track and Field Team is getting ready to start the 2012 season and is looking for athletes! All boys 6th-8th grade attending a Diocesan school are eligible to participate.[/B] No previous track or field experience is required. An informational and sign up meeting for parents and athletes will be held at Covington Catholic on Monday, February 27th at 7:00 pm. Information on practice schedule, meet schedule, etc. will be covered at the meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Charles Whalen at [email protected] or 859 307 9333.

St Joe should be a feeder School for NCC not Brossart, Brossart has way more kids to pick from then NCC they just don't get them, they go to Campbell are ND. ND has 50 signs in Campbell Co. about coming to there School.

NewCath is NOT recruiting anyone. The first bolded is the reason these kids come to NewCath, so how is that recruiting. I think it's a shame that parents who are going to send their kids up on the Hill have to go through all this nonsense.:irked:

Mustang I do agree, the Blue Colonel is drinking the Kool-aid, but I don't believe it is Blue and Gold. Don't know why he keeps contesting there are no "feeder parishes", if that were the case me and you would not be having this discussion.:deadhorse:

These two will be going to NewCath anyway so way cry foul about it.

NewCath only wants those that want to attend NewCath.

This issue goes back about 6 or 7 years ago when Brossart was taking 8th graders for athletics, a parent from St.Joe's called MEL WEBSTER and asked if their daughter could play softball, they were told YES, but then the parents told Mel that they wanted to make it clear that their daughter would be attending NEWCATH for high school and suddenly the answer was NO. So know kids in those "feeder" schools that are going to NewCath have no other choice but to play the system so to speak. Brossart and Mel have no one to blame but themselves for this. Currently there are 2 girls from St. Therese on the NewCath freshman team that will be attending Highlands for high school and they are more than welcomed to play, they weren't told NO.

By the way, all the kids on the freshman team that are from St.Joe's and St. Phillips ALL have a "legacy" to NewCath, either a the parents or brothers or sisters are alum and were going to attend NewCath anyway.

I guess the biggest question that seems very obvious to me is the following: Why would a PARENT want to send their child to a school to play a sport while in the 7th or 8th grade that doesnt plan on attending that school?? Is it really fair to the child, teammates, and the school they are playing for to do this? If a child wants to go to NCC or Brossart because of friends(which is usually the case), sports or lets not forget EDUCATION, then so be it. With the decline in the private schools due to the economy, why not just open it up to NO districting and keep the kids in the catholic school system??

While this is all new to me it seems very simple, if i am a coach and another coach does a better job of presenting their program to a player and parent and I lose that player, then shame on me!! I should have done a better job on presenting my program or honestly if a player does not want to play for me then I really dont want that player or parent.

Mustang speaks of a golfer that attends NCC and played golf an 8th grader, I applaude his parents for doing the correct thing, "don't send a student athlete to a school when there is NO chance of that student athlete attending that school. Over the past 2 years I do know of a golfer and volleyball player that was very open of letting people know that their child would not be attending Brossart, but the AD allowed those players to play a Varsity sport. If I am a high school parent with a child in playing that sport and have an 8th grader playing above my child and I know that player is not going to attend the school that I sending my child and paying tuition, well I would have to question the integrity of the AD to allow this to happen??

Again, I am new to all of this, but it sounds like some at BBHS call foul and worry more about what the other school/schools are doing rather than just try to do a better job of making a better presentation. Maybe some administrative moves would be a good start???

Why not have Mr. Clines devise a contract for the student athletes that if they play at certain high school as an 8th grader they are committed to that school for the next 4 years after that and if they choose not to attend that high school then they lose their freshmen year to play in a sport?? Most likely there may be a legal issue for this not to happen, but sounds like a good solution to this mess and would stop all of the jelaous banter/debating..... well lets just call it like it is "crying".

Wrong again! Notre Dame does not have a freshman team this year.

I heard the new coach didn't know if there would be enough girls to field a freshman team, I find that hard to believe. However I know they are not on NewCath's freshman schedule. Could change if they have freshman team, since all schedules were made out last September.

Got it straight from the horses mouth.

Thanks. School website says softball would be offered at frosh, jv, and varsity levels.

I can't believe with 170 freshman and girls from the 7th & 8th grade in all the schools that can go to ND, that they don't have enough to field a freshman team.

From the St Henry website:

For the 2011-12 school year, there will be a two-tiered tuition structure (formerly three) for diocesan high schools. The first rate or diocesan rate is for a Catholic student registered in a parish in the Diocese of Covington. The second rate or non-diocesan rate is for a student who is not Catholic or is a Catholic student from outside the diocese (Cincinnati, Indiana or even Lexington).

Feeder schools are listed also. I am pretty sure that when the need arises to fill a St Henry freshman roster for any sport, the opportunity is opened to only the feeder schools. No concrete info on that part.

I'm checking this out with the top colonel as we speak. I suspect that it might be because CovCath might be the only diocesan high school to offer middle school Track and Field. If this is the case, kids wishing to do Middle School TF might be permitted to play on CovCath's team.

For years, before Brossart started football, NCC had open season (legally) on Brossart feeder kids wishing to play football, BECAUSE Brossart did not offer the sport. I suspect the same is true here.
