I'll pay for the CJ online because if it went away, I'd wind up subscribing to home delivery anyway. I am interested in local news, and read pretty much everything published here in Louisville. But, many publications aren't as much hard news as the CJ is. And....the CJ isn't that much "hard" news...but it's where I like to read about crimes, politics, and a lot of their indepth, multi-issue examinations of issues such as the prescription drug abuse problem in Eastern Kentucky and the examination of the JCPS.

Out of curiosity, if almost all of you won't pay for the CJ, why are you willing to pay for BGP?

1 - Loyalty

2 - the relationships developed

3 - the information

* - The fee isn't great, here, though I still feel there shouldn't be one. However, I pay it. And it's the only site that I am willing to pay for, currently.

Why pay for info that is readily available for free elsewhere?

If all the info is available for free elsewhere, then I'd agree with you. But I doubt that is the case. If you are just interested in the sports stuff, you may be right. But I'd think that there are a large number of people like Rockmom that used to pay for home delivery that stopped when they could get free access, that will either resume home delivery or pay for the online access.

I did the same thing with the Enquirer. I'll either pay for the complete on line access or resume home delivery. I always thought it was an absolutely stupid business decision to allow free online access. Realistically, did you pay as much attention to the online advertising that you did to the advertising in the printed version? I sure didn't. When an ad block appeared, I quickly closed it without even paying attention to what it was about. Don't ask me why, but I just paid more attention to the printed ads than I did to the on line ads.

As someone mentioned ( I think it was Getslow) Gannett has announced it will be doing the same thing as the CJ for most of its newspapers, which means the ability to find free access to the information is going to become more and more difficult. And it should be that way.

Cable TV requires a fee for its product; BGP requires a fee; I charge for my services; why shouldn't newspapers be paid for their product?

Not to mention, people complain about layoffs, etc at newspapers. But how in the world do they expect that a newspaper can put out a quality product, pay employees and give it all away? In the end, you have no newspaper, a taxpayer paid newspaper (NOT a good thing), or you realize it's a service you pay for. Before on-line news, the only way you could get your news was through newspapers, magazines and TV. People pay for cable, they'll pay for magazines and they'll pay for other sites. It's quite possible an even better product will be available once it goes to a paid format.

I would have been happy to pay for the old Kentucky Post of days gone bye on-line. They had great local news and sports stories and covered the local NKy Counties of Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties like no newspapers has since. I really miss that paper but pay for the CJ or Cincinnati Enquirer or the NKy.com? No way.......

My argument against the pay wall is that 90% of newspapers do not have enough valuable and unique content to get me to pay for it.

If the Enquirer goes to a pay wall what would they have on there that I couldn't get elsewhere?

I don't know, can you get the local news elsewhere in a timely fashion without having to look all over the place?

A) Where would you get that information and B) How reliable is it going to be?

And before you say, TV, don't. TV stations give you a basic gloss-over of the information. They are not capable of investigating and exploring issues in depth on TV the way a newspaper does, mainly because of the time constraints involved.

We' re assuming there would not be alternatives? Kypost.com? Local papers? TV(even with less depth)? People discussing it on BGP?

I'm not sure I'm getting a lot of quality local news today. I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay for it just to be online. I don't read much online local news now and it's free.
