Prewitt is going to pass Billy Ray's records in both scoring and rebounding. I believe that by the end of next season he will be in the company you mention.

No doubt Nate McGoveny is the best player in the region.

 

In the top 10 in both defensive and offensive categories, Nate definitely gets my vote.

Maybe this is just semantics. I believe that there is a subtle but distinct difference between a "Player of the Year" and a "Most Valuable Player". With respect to an MVP; my thought is that this type of award generally goes to either the best player on the best team. In this year's 10th; I lean toward Stenzel.

 

The "POY" is a bit of a different concept. This to me would be the person who is the region's "stat-filler". In this year's 10th; I lean toward McGovney or Prewitt.

 

If the Region's POY is by definition a senior; this certainly limits the options.

Do you have offensive and defensive stats for the players in the 10th? I've not been able to find a comprehensive list. I'm from NKY and don't know where to find 10th region stats. KHSAA does not always have up to date info for all teams and nothing that I've seen that gives rankings by players in a region?

I look at this totally different. Just because you have great stats, dosn't mean you are the best player. If a player is on a team that has several talented players, then their stats won't be as impressive. There are also things that a player does for his team that don't show up in the stats. And what stats are you going by....scoring? Too many just look at the scoring as a judge of who is the best, there is so much more than just scoring .

Believe the coaches vote for the POY. They do have a chance to see all/most of the players. I would think they discuss the players they have not seen.

You go to the games and watch them play. That is why I have such a hard time with state wide polls and even 10th region polls. Not everyone gets to see all of the talent. Great point by Goldie about teams that only have one standout. Stats tend to get inflated.

I tend to agree with you, I think.

 

If I was voting for this, I would base my decision on the answer to this question: If I was starting a High School team & had to pick one player from the 10th Region to start it with, who would that player be? Prewitt would be the answer to that question, with Mason Monroe close behind. To be fair, I'm going mostly off of stats this year. I've seen all the players in the discussion, but not all of them this season.

 

I would say under the MVP concept, it's Stenzel or Prewitt. Under the POY concept, it would be Prewitt, Monroe or McGovney.

I agree with the comment about the stat-stuffer, not necessarily always being the best player, to an extent. Prewitt/Stenzel obviously are able to do more because they have other talented players to give them space to score. McGovney is pretty much the extent of the Campbell County offense (meaning no offense to the rest of the players on the team). He draws 2 players regularly (not that the others don't) and sometimes 3. Nate's numbers are impressive in that his shooting % reflects that he doesn't always take bad/forced shots, which would be easy for a player of his caliber to do given the players around him. If you've watched him play, it's easy to see that he does a lot more than score even though he has limited help. But he doesn't try to force the action to create more opportunities to inflate his stats. In fact, at times, he's probably even too unselfish.

 

But, just because his team is 14-10 or whatever it is, doesn't mean that he should be discounted from the discussion. He may not win, but his play certainly warrants being in the discussion as one of the top 2-3 players in the region.

 

I'd think that it would be easier to label him as an MVP than a POY, given that without him, his team would have no chance to win a District Title or compete in the region. If you take the other two off their team, they may not be as good, but they'd be a lot more competitive.

 

Regardless, they are all talented players and should all get a lot of consideration for being the best in the 10th this year.

I've seen probably 35-40 games this year but only about 8 teams from the 10th play. Of those 10th region teams, I'd say McGovney has been the best I have seen. I've not seen Prewitt, Fatkin or Stenzel this year so can't compare him to these guys. Nate is a more complete ball player than Monroe and Ford (who are both great players) even though he has limited options on his team. It would be a shame if they didn't give the award to the most deserving kid versus a senior or a UK commit.

I would have to pass on my vote it the Gods of the 10th asked for my valuable opinion since I have limited exposure to the southern side of the 10th. I'm still waiting for my call regarding the 9th region POY. I'd cast my vote knowing that I have seen each of the contenders play.

I've said this before, if a kid gets mentioned on here is a a great honor that someone respects them enough to even mention them. It's a shame there is only a limited amount of awards to go around.

Is the POY award only awarded to a senior?

 

Yes, just comfirmed that a few minutes ago. The 10th has a all region team and can be underclassment, but the POY goes to a Senior. This player is recognized at the state tourney and gets a automatic invitatioin to try out for the Ky all stars team.

 

So this really changes things. Who would everyones choice be now for POY knowing that is going to go only to a senior.

I know Prewitt & Monroe are juniors. What about McGovney & Stenzel?
