I just don't understand how you fire a guy for losing his quarterback for the year.

I'm gonna throw it out there....Jim Tressel will be the next HC in Indy.

Well considering that the NFL followed the suspension that the NCAA gave him. I would doubt that the NFL would let anyone hire him as a head coach either, they seem to want to follow the actions NCAA gives. So your right people should think about that before suggesting the sweater vest.

Two texts I have received from ESPN today... Notice timestamps. I'm all sorts of confused.

ESPN NFL - Colts announce Jim Caldwell has been retained as coach (14-2 in 2009, 10-6 in 2010, 2-14 in 2011). 2:33 PM

ESPN News - Colts have fired coach Jim Caldwell (2-14 in 2011), 2 weeks after firing vice chairman Bill Polian. 2:50 PM

^FC, they already suspended him. His punishment with the NFL is over. They aren't going to step in and tell the Colts who they can and/or can't hire.

Not looking good for Mannings time in Indy. GM gone, coach from the Dungy era gone, I'd say Peyton's days are numbered.

If Manning leaves Indy my facebook feed will EXPLODE. It will be like Tebowgedon x100 -- only quite comical from my viewpoint.

Does this mean that the guy that had to stand behind Caldwell and poke him with a stick to make sure he was awake will lose his job as well?

Yes and since the punishment the NCAA has now basically put a thing in place that will basically prevent him from coaching for the next 5 years in college football. So I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL does at least not allow him to be a head coach. I don't think it really matters, because I think it would be a 1% chance that the Colts would actually hire him anyways.

Seems like he'd be able to sue and win. How can they deny him a job?

They can't....There is absolutely zero chance the NFL would even attempt to tell the Colts who they could or couldn't hire. They aren't the dysfunctional NCAA.

The Colts have a long way to go with or without Manning. I hope he retires to salvage his legacy...

How mad is Jeff Fisher right now...

I'd say not all that mad, Indianapolis has plenty of things needing work too. Maybe not quite as much as St. Louis, but it's not like he was walking in to a playoff guaranteed team if he would have ever went to the Colts.
