It showed it does matter. A team who is known for their defense, and guess what a TOP Ten DEFENSE just beat one of the best offenses in football. They caused turnovers, but most importantly never let the Saints get into rhythm either. Even in the second half when the 49ers offense did nothing until the final four minutes, the defense kept them right in it. Also guess what else it showed? It showed how when QB's play against the bad defenses that these top offenses have, that the QB's will look even better. Which is more reason to go against your Dalton theory, because most of these teams who have the better QB's don't have the defenses. So Dalton could start looking really good again.

 

Do you really want to go more into this debate? Right now one top 10 defense is a Championship game, then after this Ravens/Texans game is over there will be 2 top 10 defenses in the game. Which means Dalton would have played 3 games against top 10 defenses who are in Championship games! If anything this just shows that both ways are good ways to go about being successful. Some people have success having top offenses, some have success by having top defenses. Which means playing 11 games against top 10 defenses is also very tough, just like if they played 11 games against top 10 offenses would have been.

Denver doesn't have a top 10 defense and their toop 2 safeties didn't play. . That top 10 defense of the 49ers though had pressure on Brees all day long, like most top 10 defenses do. They were able to pick him off when they had a chance, they had him not comfortable in the pocket and making mistakes like he normally does not. He was still good enough to score points, however those mistakes allowed for the 49ers to do well. Which gets back to them having a top defense. Look at the top 10 defenses we had talked about this year, 49ers, Steelers, Ravens, Texans, etc they all have things in common. Put pressure on the QB, make it hard to complete passes, stop the run too. You admit that putting a pass rush and stuff like that is important. Well most of the top 10 defenses do that, which Dalton played 11 games against that this year including the playoffs. So if you don't see how playing those types of teams do matter big time for QB's, especially a rookie QB then you are off your rocker. Having a top 10 defense, and playing a bad defense of the Saints allowed them to win. Having a top offense surely didn't help the Saints in trying to stop the 22nd ranked offense in the 49ers who made it look easy against them in the last 4 minutes, with a QB everyone said for his whole career sucked. Playing bad defenses make QB's look even better, and playing good defenses make even great QB's like Brees not look as great and makes him make mistakes and he is not even a rookie.

 

Just face it, playing a lot of games against top defenses does matter and matters a lot more than you seem to think. I have no problem admitting that also playing top offenses a lot would also matter too. You need to have at least one of them do do well in the NFL, and both ways have proven to be successful.

These two teams shouldn't even be here though by your thinking. Teams being led by top defenses is overrated by what you seem to think, and having to play those teams are easier than playing top offenses. :lol: Playing a top offense, or top defense is hard to win.

However I am done now, I am going to finish watching a second top 10 defense make it to a championship. I love underdog stories, and apparently these are underdog stories because top 10 defensive teams shouldn't be that hard to beat. :lol:

This game and the Pitt game last week just prove that in today's NFL defense doesn't matter. To win you need to score points. SF played great to an extent on D yesterday and the Saints hung 32 on them with 4 turnovers.

They played great and had 32 hung on them. You still have to score to win. The key was getting two huge offensive drives to come from behind in the last 4 minutes of the game IMO.

 

Now the NYG's D was the key to their win.

Agreed, but no matter how good your D is you have to score points to win against good teams. Houston with Yates isn't a good team so Baltimore got lucky this week. They need to score next week to win

Their top 5 defense set the offense up for other scores, the top 5 defense held them to 32 points. If they were not as good of a defense we would have seen th Saints do the samething they did to the Lions. The Lions definitely have the offense to score with the Saints, but didn't matter since their defense did nothing. The 49ers have an offense which ranked I believe 22nd but since their defense created turnovers early and made the Saints work and frustrated Brees, it allowed them to play their style of football, and not the up and down game the Saints like to play.

 

For some reason you act like that I have said you only need a top 10 defense to do great. I know if a team has a top 10 defense but one of the last offenses in the league that it won't matter. Just like with the Jags and Browns. However the top 10 defense does matter still with those teams in how opposing QB's would look. If your always playing top 10 defenses it does matter, especially with a rookie which got us into this big discussion. A lot of these top 10 defenses like the Ravens, Steelers, Texans, and 49ers have offenses that can make plays still to help win the games. We just seen the 2 of the 3 best offenses in the league lose to teams, because their defense sucked. Having a top defense and an average offense can do well against top offenses with bad defenses. They will slow down the top offenses some, but be able to score against the bad defenses.
