Ranking the 9th Region

Featured Replies

Agree with Walter, as I posted yesterday, there are 6 teams that can potentially win the region, no disrespect to the teams from 7 on back but they cannot win 3 games in a row in the regionals IMO.

Credit to the Bulldogs last night, they deserved to win and were the better team. HC will have to make adjustments in their gameplan if and when they play them again. Holmes may just be the 1 team in the region HC doesn't want to press and run with. Bulldogs guards were outstanding last night.

Straightshooter must not be an HC fan - lol...ranking them 6th at 14-2 and already beaten NCC. Interesting to say the least.

I said this in the prediction thread. There isn't a team in this region that can play uptempo and run with Holmes and expect to win. They are simply too quick and good in transition. Key to beating them is break the press then be patient offensively and run your offense long enough to catch them out of position from trapping and being aggressive on the perimeter...obviously easier said than done because of how athletic they are.

So did Holmes have a huge off night at Holmes the other night vs. CovCath, in only beating CovCath by 2 or did HC play so poorly last night at HC, that you think HC is better than CovCath?

I mean the CovCath vs. Holmes game was nip and tuck all night long, while the Holmes vs. HC game was never in doubt after halftime and the game was at HC. Do you honestly think Holmes would have won by 2 at CovCath Walter?

It's all about match ups TOG.

Holmes is a bad match up for HC because of the style HC plays. They can't try to run with Holmes and press them and expect to win...see last night.

Covcath matches up much better with Holmes because they have a pg that can handle Holmes pressure...HC doesn't. I also think Covcath plays smarter at both ends. They don't force shots like HC does and because they don't try to press Holmes, they aren't as easily worn down. The HC kids were all sucking for air last night.

BUT, head to head HC is a bad match up for Covcath. Why? Campbell. He WILL be a problem for CCH. HC is much more athletic than the Colonels so I can see rebounding being an issue. At the end of the day, I just think Holy Cross is a much more complete team.

Honestly, even though uptempo favors Holmes, I rather see Holmes in a rematch with Covcath over HC. Holmes played terrible against Covcath and still got the w. They had a lot of unforced mistakes and I really don't see Coston being a non factor against them again.

My #3 and #4 don't have much distance between them though. It wouldn't surprise me if either team beat the other by double digits when they play. They are very evenly matched but I give HC the advantage for having the best player on the court in Campbell.

7a Ryle

7b St. Henry

7c Cooper

7d Conner

8a Beechwood

8b Newport

8c Highlands

8d Lloyd Memorial

On any given night, any of the 1-6 teams could beat each other. The "7th and 8th" place teams would have to play their best game of the year type games and catch the 1-6 teams on a bad shooting night to upset 1-6.

Let's go 7s and 8s!! Think Hoosiers--Milan, Indiana!

2003 maybe?

Ryle had Doellman.

Boone had McFarland, Laboiteaux, and Rasso.

St Henry had Vieth, Smith, Fabiani, and Otte.

Simon Kenton had Brock, Stowers, Kennedy, and Kannady.

Highlands had Neltner, Guidugli, Gilles.

Holmes had Fischer, Englemon, Brandon Smith.

Covcath had Nestheide, Votel boys, and Muck.

Dixie had Bramlage boys, O'Toole boys, DJ Corbett, and 7' Mays coming off bench.

Holy Cross was even a tough out with Bibbins, Stevie, and Steenken.

By far the deepest and most wide open the region has ever been that i can remember. A lot of talent on those teams that weren't even mentioned because of only being sophomores.

St Henry, Dixie, SK and Highlands were all 4 in the top 25 in the state together at one point that year.

Same year I was thinking of. LOADED! Truthfully I thought SK and Dixie were the best 2 teams that year until we go to the ALL A and I saw what St Henry did.

I left out Beechwood. I would put them in between Highlands and Newport.

In the past week, Newport beat Highlands and Beechwood beat Newport. But that's quibbling. Those teams and Lloyd are all pretty even, as Straightshooter says in his post.

I would say they all are even but you know I am going with my team as the higher ranked. :D

Honestly, I know Newport beat the Birds but I think if there is a rematch in the Districts you will see a different outcome. No way they can shoot that way again and Highlands will play hopefully play better in the 1st half. They dug themselves a hole and almost pulled it out in the end. I was impressed though with Newport's discipline. They normally self destruct and turn it over but they played a sound game.

I cant comment on Beechwood until I see them. I know on paper they are solid and Estrella has stepped up as a scorer but they are in a similar situation as Highlands with having some football kids that just arent there yet. Highlands doesnt have them until the final regular season game.

Lloyd, a team that has lost some games I couldnt believe also have some athleticism and could be right in there.

Disagree. Campbell is not "athletic." He's big and talented. He doesn't run well. Not explosive. Very good but not because of his athletic ability. HC does not have much if any of an advantage in that area.

I agree Clyde. Campbell is also not very physical. He does not like to bang it down low, both Knox (mostly) and Rice toook it to him. He is extremely talented with both his inside and outside game. Holmes didn't even guard him on the press, they allowed the entry pass to him and plyed their guards hard on the wings.

I agree he does not run well, but he sure leaps for boards and has great timing on blocked shots. If not athletic, what is a better word? Big and talented make sense, but I would consider him to be athletic. ( and let's not forget he has played for 3 different teams this week)

As I said the kid is talented and knows how to play. He's not going to outrun any CCH kid. He's not quicker than they are.

That's not an insult. No one calls Shaq athletic. Kid can play and is the #1 player in NKY.

Who just fell into the Indians lap weeks before the season started. lol

Never said he was athletic. I said the same thing when I saw him last night...big and talented but slow footed. A lot of his blocks and rebounds come from simply being bigger and stronger than everyone else.

Top to bottom though, I think HC is a more athletic team than Covcath.

1. Winner of Dixie/Holmes matchup January 31

2. Loser of Dixie/Holmes matchup.

3. Newport Central Catholic

4. Holy Cross

5. Boone County

6. Covington Catholic

Only bad part about this is that at least one of these teams won't make it out of the 35th District. One district winner will get a bad matchup getting the 35th district loser. Hopefully I can make it to a game or two this year. Regional tournament should bring top notch games this year.

Dixie

Holmes

NC

HC

CCH

Boone
