So are you expecting the media to cut, edit, paste, judge the apology to everyone else (teammates, coaches, school, students, fans, public)? Or is the Frease/Xavier the only group you would expect them to distort? That's the part of your explanation I don't buy. Heck, if you're that concerned about your apology being twisted, release a written apology. I just think a public (not personal) apology by the teams/involved players to one another now would go a long way to helping heal this situation.

Mack apologized to Mick and the UC community on his show tonight.

 

GT, any response to this? Did they spin his words out of context and cause harm to Xavier? Could Mick not do the same or would it be to risky? I guess he's too busy making sure that the UC players feel that basketball is a privilege so he can play them all against ND.

Didn't listen to the show as I was out with my family celebrating the birthday of my cousin and the release of my grandma from medical care after she had a double stroke and heart attack two months ago. Really enjoyed my daughter getting to see her not in a hospital bed with tubes and wires everywhere. Me commenting on his words would be a lot like how the national media has spun this situation to fit their agenda.

 

Maybe Mick will make the a similar comment on his radio show this week. I don't know for sure because it hasn't happened yet. The two did each apologize to each other after the game. Here is the direct quote from Mick today if you need it.

 

"We both understand the situation is bad. We both looked at each other for five seconds and didn’t know what else to say other than ‘I’m sorry.’ We both know it’s no good for every and all reasons, it’s no good for anybody including all you guys here.”

 

At least Mick Cronin, who insisted on Saturday that this was more than basketball and his job is about more than winning games, has something to back up his words. He reasserted that the final length of the suspensions will be up to him, saying, "In my locker room, nobody will take the floor again if they don’t understand it’s a privilege."

 

More, the man who said it was his job to turn his players into men actually made his players act like men.

 

GT, I saw a clip from this press conference today and I 100% agree with what Coach Cronin did with this in making his players man up and face the press face to face. Also, with his staements that absolutely said what he expects from his kids and what would not be tolerated. I will say that I probably would have put the kid that kicked/stomped on the X player off the team. If I understood the reports no one is off the team and severe suspensions were issued.

I really like the way that Cronin coaches in game, he is an excellent basketball coach and now I respect the man even more. Cronin is a class act. So, for what it's worth Cronin gets an oldrambler "AttaBoy" .

I discussed this last night with a few friends, some much older and wiser than me. We didn't necessarily discuss the thug comment, but I posed the question, "Did Deters look to prosecute Cueto for kicking another person during that brawl? No, so why would he in the UC vs. XU one? Oh, simply because its part of the game in baseball."

Unless the young adults you are dealing with have every word they say in a situation like this judged, cut, edited and used at the whim of national media, it just isn't the same. Take a look at the last 5 days leading up to and after the game for more proof than imaginable.

 

There will be contact between the two teams before too long. It cannot and should not happen until things cool way down and some distance is placed between the programs and the brawl. Mick talked today about being willing to work with X in community service opportunities going forward. It will happen, but right now is not the time...

I have a problem if the players were "forced" to man up as the thread title suggests. They should apologize. They shouldn't be forced to. They should apologize to every person with a camera or notebook. But they should do it because it's the right thing to do and not because they were forced to.

I'm watching the presser. Mick makes a really good point when he says coaches/administrators/schools often fail to reinforce that being on a scholarship is a privilege.

Props to UC for not allowing the players to read prepared statements.

I'll agree with you that they should apologize. Both teams should. However, I will strongly disagree that they should apologize to every person with a camera or notebook. They should apologize to their teammates, their coaches, their school and their fellow students/alumni they represent...and, most importantly the team they were fighting with. But the reporters?!? Come on man. They owe more of an apology to the janitor who had to clean up the floor, than they do the reporters. Just don't see it.

^ You mistook what that meant. You find someone with a camera in order to apologize to the fans, alumni, school, etc.

I've never heard Yancy talk much. Don't know much about him. Watching this presser tells me he seems like a solid kid. Tough to watch him have to deal with the idea of people calling him a thug.
