Story going around that a high school player was kicked off of the team after the coach read some of his Facebook posts regarding basketball.

 

Posts were something like :

 

"I guess an open shot is a bad shot"

 

"I guess it would be nice to go home and play guitar with my friends for once"

 

Coach took it as criticism and supposedly kicked the kid off of the team.

If the kid was not given any warning, then the coach is more immature than the kid IMO. Or the coach wanted him gone and this was an easy excuse to get rid of him.

I think I may pull him aside and discuss it but kicking him off is ridiculous.

 

In a world of social media its going to happen. There are idiots out there that complain about their job on Facebook. LOL

I think a sit down with the young man would be appropriate. Must be more to the story but the coach is still in the wrong if this is the reason for das boot.

Why would you even think to have a sit-down?

Does it make it worse if the posts were protected ie the coach couldn't see them but someone told the coach? Isn't that like someone saying "Coach, Billy said .....?"

If so the coach must have thin skin to react in such a way. If the kid did make inappropriate posts then someone should pull him aside and talk to him about it. These are still kids and they are still in high school so they still have much to learn in terms of vocalizing their feelings/opinions of things in the right fashion. If this previously had not been addressed then the coach is completely in the wrong and should have had a sit down with the man before doing anything like this in order to give the guy a chance...

There has to be more to the story than what happened on Facebook. The kid knew what he was doing. Saying it on Facebook is akin to saying it to the coach's face. If the kid said it to his face should be be allowed a spot on the team? I say no. Once one kid shows disrespect torwards the coach then the rest of the team will follow. Is that what we teach our kids now? That you can disrespect authority figures and have a sit down and solve it? I am in a union but if I go on Facebook and talk crap on the plant manager I will be fired. Quickly.

Im with PP92. On top of that fact, the kid could have been an absolute cancer as far as attitude and example.

Quite simply don't talk bad about someone on Facebook and not expect them to retaliate. People put way too much stuff on the internet that they wouldn't say face to face.

Rules? What rules? So, if your child made the above statements about his/her coach, you would be okay with the removal from the team? Also Clyde mentioned that the player had a page that was protected, I guess to view his page you had to have added as a friend and the coach was not on that list, and someone told the coach about it. The player is supposed to sit back and lose his voice? His right to free speech? The examples of the posts were VERY mild!

 

What is next? A student makes a mild comment about a bad grade and he/she gets suspended? It sounds like the coach has other issues, and/or other motives.

I disagree. First, his page and status updates were not set to public so only his friends could read it. So it wasn't like saying it to the coaches face. It would be more like he was sitting with friends or family at McDonalds after the game talking about something he was upset about when a third party overheard it and went back to the coach with it. Would you kick a kid off the team if you were the coach and that happened? Second, did you read the posts? They didn't mention anything about the coach at all. Those were very mild. Even if a player had said something like that out of frustration during a game would that deserve being kicked off of the team or just benched? I've seen a lot of players on a lot of teams get upset and disagree with a coach during a game at all levels of play. He didn't call the coach anything or say his system was stupid or anything. It sounds like he was criticised for taking a shot and thought it was a good shot. I'd say that happens 50 times a night in gyms all across the state and the player gets sent to the bench to cool off the majority of the time. And most importantly: Did the coach have a set rule in place regarding social media use? If so, then sure kick the kid off the team. If not, I think he's way out of line given the posts that were made.
