Trinity vs Don Bosco "National Championship" game a no go!

Featured Replies

I thought this was interesting from the article:

Trinity coach Bob Beatty said he would have had several issues playing such a game, including compensation for his assistant coaches and asking players to add extra practices and a game to an already long season.

“I would have had to have been told to do it,” Beatty said. “Would I have accepted it on my own? No. But I respect my bosses, and if they had told me to do it, I would have done it.”

I heard about it when it first came up and said at the time that I didn't like it. I think it takes away from the state championship and also prevents the kids from moving on to other sports. I also think Coach Beatty was just being honest. As he pointed out in the post game interviews, the coaches had either been coaching or scouting for 18 straight Friday nights. That's a long haul. I know they all love their coaching jobs, but they also have families. I don't want to see the high scholos follow the NCAA. If such a game is ever sanctioned and we are ever in the mix again, I'm sure we would play, but I hope they leave it alone. SI had the article a few years ago mourning the loss of multi sport athletes in high school. Extending football season into the end of December would be another step toward complete elimination of multi sport athletes. By the way, I feel the same way about flying around the country for games. I just don't think it is a good idea.

I'm against it. Football season is already long enough. As TA said let's let the state championship be worth something.

Agreed with 100%. It would have been fun to watch and fun to play in for the kids, but I'm not sure it would have been healthy for high school football. We need to always remember this is high school athletics we are dealing with. College sports have gotten way out of control and for the most part the term student athlete as it relates to D-1 sports is an embarrassment and a fraud. I hope and pray we never let the same happen to high school sports. Can anyone believe that we have national all star football games in the 7th and 8th grades? Dads Gone Wild.

I think it could jeopardize their participation in other sports. Neither of them can afford to do that.

Agreed. If T had thumbed their noses at the KHSAA and played the game, I can almost guarantee that T would lose their membership in the KHSAA. Any kid participating in the game would have lost their eligibility to participate in future KHSAA sanctioned events.

I thought so as well. Kind of surprised by that, especially stating that compensation for his assistants was a concern? Pretty sure if the game was played at Yankee stadium and televised on ESPN there would have been plenty of dollars floating around to compensate his assistants.

Trinity-46 Don Bosco-17 There, I saved everybody a lot of time, travel and trouble.

First, I have no problem with Coach Beatty's comments. The man and his staff (like other coaching staffs) LIVE Trinity football for months, and then there is the off-season program.

Second, I don't see how risking the kids' health, eligibility and general well-being is worth putting together another game, that in the end has no real significance.

The game would be for the fans only, and that's not a good enough reason, in my opinon.

From a fan perspective, it would be an interesting matchup. However, the precedence it might set could cause all kinds of uproar. It would be a BCS like system of the two top teams as voted by polls playing in a championship.

I agree would have been tough to pull off no matter what the KHSAA or NJHSAA said about it. Just so many logistics.

But I do find it interesting that the KHSAA can let cross country and track and other teams basically break the rules (right?) and compete under Louisville Track Club at a national event and then just say "there are a number of other sports that retitle themselves and do something in the offseason."

So, why can't football teams just retitle themselves?

I would love to see this match-up. I dont see why Beatty is so against it. Many of us, including me, think Trinity would win. I guarantee there are a lot of other coaches out there that would be tearing down the door for an opportunity like that. Get a national tv contract, and make the school a boat load of money. I dont know I think people are crazy if they wouldn't want to see this match-up.

Here's the explanation according to Mr. Tackett:

Julian Tackett, commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, said he was aware of the discussions and would not have allowed the game.

“I was a ‘no’ two or three steps down the road,” he said.

Tackett said KHSAA rules prohibit football teams from using equipment once the playoffs are finished.

“And I’m not sure how other members of the association would feel about Trinity getting another week or two of practice time,” he said

Is that amount of money worth risking injury to players that could be permanent? Trinity didn't escape their season unscathed, as outlined in another thread. Shoot, Nate Stein is lucky to be walking. These kids played top-notch competition this season....isn't that enough? I don't doubt the kids wouldn't love it. I know the fans would love it. But it would be different if this was an event that could have been planned as a possibility. It certainly could change the way a team utilizes it's personnel throughout the season in anticipation of that particular post-season event. Dr. Mullen mentions they're looking at scheduling DBP in the future. I like that approach better.

Because of the mass amount of people involved. When 8 girls change uniforms and go run somewhere, that's a simple van trip.

It's not possible right now. I imagine, in the next couple of years, things will change.

The article also mentioned that the runners don't compete representing their schools, but as individuals.
