NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Featured Replies

I know Newton is probably going to win it, but you can't tell me Dalton hasn't been as impressive.

Look at the rookie starting QBs in the league...

Newton and the Panthers: 3-8

Gabbert and the Jaguars: 3-8

Ponder and the Vikings: 2-9

Dalton and the Bengals: 7-4

You can't tell me that Dalton walked into a better situation than any of them, with the exception of maybe Newton (Although he at least returned all his offensive weapons).

What Dalton has been able to do is far more impressive than what Newton has done. He's taken a team that was terrible last year, lost 3 of its biggest playmakers and turned them into a potential playoff team. Newton has transformed the Panthers from an ugly loser to an exciting loser. Congrats.

Am I alone in thinking Dalton deserves the award over Cam?

Totally agree. I actually think Dalton will win it if they make the playoffs.

No, I think that Dalton is more deserving of it too. If Cincinnati ends up with at least 10 wins, I think he will get it.

I agree and I think most people agree with you or are coming around to this line of thinking. Cam has slowed since his monster start. His accuracy has improved, but the ultimate result (W/Ls) have not. They should have at least two more wins than they do. Carolina's defense is horrendous though. Dalton has made a lot of clutch plays.

I know that he won't win, but to throw another piece into the puzzle, if DeMarco Murray had been playing from the beginning of the season in Dallas, would he be considered? I think so.

I think Dalton should be right there when it's all said and done. However, I don't think you can simply look at W's & L's. Like bugatti said Carolina's D is flat out terrible. Carolina is ranked ahead of Cincy in most offensive catagories while Cincy is ranked in the top ten in most defensive stats and is top 5 in some. Carolina is only better than Indy in points allowed. Carolina is allowing 27.7pts/game while only scoring 22.9pts/game. Cincy is averaging 23.5 while only allowing 19.5. Not hard to see why the Bengals have a better record.

All that said I don't disagree that Dalton should get serious consideration.

I'd give it to AJ Green before I give it to Murray.

Both are worthy of consideration, but DeMarco Murray is just outside the top 10 in rushing and he's only started 6 games.

Dalton's numbers other than wins and losses simply aren't as good as Newtons. They're pretty close in overall rating. Dalton has 3 more passing TD's, but Newton has around 800 more passing yards. Newton also has nearly 500 yards rushing and 10 rushing TD's.

Dalton is a good QB but I think Newton is slightly ahead in the ROY race.

As A Cowboys fan I would love to think so. He probably won't be in contention but he has been a blessing to the Cowboy's and their season. Spent most of traning camp and pre season with injury but once he got back up to speed he has been not only the best back for Dallas but one of the leagues best RB's IMO. I liked him at OU and knew he was good but guy's still doing it in the NFL. So quick and agile for a big back but can also run with power between the tackles. Absolutely love his game, hoping he can stay healthy.

This is true, but I think Newton wins it. His team is not that good and he is still putting up big numbers in a pass happy offense. Yes, Dalton walked into a better situation for one, he has a better defense with a easier schedule..

You must be a homer to even think that Dalton situation was worse than Newton's. Carolina was 1-8 last year, not to mention their schedule was IMO tougher than the Bengals.

Since when did they shorten the season to 9 games?

Also, I said with the exception of Carolina. That means I acknowledged that their situation was as bad if not more so than Cincinnati's. The last thing people on here would call me with regards to the Bengals is a "homer".

Dalton is at least making it a good conversation on who should win. He has definitely had a really good season so far and deserves recognition. I still think you have to give it to Cam though. If the Panthers had any D whatsoever they would probably be sitting at 7-4 right now as well. 5 games have been decided by 7 points or less, and against some very good competition (Packers, Saints, Bears).

Some stats for comparison:

Cam Newton - 61.0% Pass Completion, 3093 Passing Yds, 12 Passing TDs, 14 INT, 464 Rushing Yds, 710 Rushing TDs

Andy Dalton - 60.1% Pass Completion, 2509 Passing Yds, 16 Passing TDs, 12 INT, 81 Rushing Yds, 1 Rushing TDs

I'm not sure if these stats have been updated for this week or not. They're from ESPN.com
