That combined with the outcome for the Bengals on Sunday has definitely put Dalton behind the 8ball. However, he has been terrific this season and the future is very bright for him.

Has a QB EVER led the league in rushing TDs for an entire season? Has a QB ever even been close to that?

It's settled (OROY) because Dalton's biggest argument was his record. His record is still better, but when you look closely at the record they have 1 win against a team with a winning record. Newton's stats are continuing to pile up.

 

The top defense argument is silly and mostly subjective. Yards against is a decent measurement, but to not look at the schedule when evaluating that is dumb. It is abundantly clear that the Bengals have faced one very good QB (Ben) and one above average QB (Flacco) all year. If you don't think that is the biggest factor in their D's stats I can't help you, but you're way wrong. How many guys from the Gals D make the pro bowl this year? How many ever have made it?

 

The defense being basically in the top 5 now two out of the last 3 years, show that it is not just a fluke as you seem to think. I didn't realize you had to have pro bowlers to be a good defense either? Remember the pro bowl usually is guys based on reputation, a guy might not be as good that season. However if he is a guy that people already viewed as a top guy he usually gets it over a guy who probably deserved it more that year. Very poor argument man using that. Not to mention people were mentioning both Geno and Dunlap as possible guys who could make the pro bowl. Dunlap before his injury was the top in the NFL in QB pressures, and Geno was tied for the lead for sacks for interior lineman. If Geno doesn't make it, it won't be because he didn't deserve it. He won't make it because he doesn't have that reputation. This defense was a top 5 defense and rightfully so. Now without having their top 2 corners, top defensive lineman, and another defensive tackle who is good against the run then yes it might not be top 5 anymore. However to basically act like they weren't even before that is wrong. Especially when this defense has accomplished it 2 out of the last 3 years. They just haven't built up the depth like the Steelers and Ravens to overcome injuries.

The increase in competition has every bit as much to do with the fall of the defense as the injuries do. Besides, the Bengals are only 14th in points per game allowed.....that doesn't sound like a Top 5 defense at all--more like a middle of the pack defense.

Obviously after giving up 35 points to the Steelers does not help points per game. Which also does get back to injuries, and injuries to key players at that. Once we got to these tougher games is when we started having to play without key players against them. Not to mention 35 of the points they just gave up had a lot to do with special teams. One resulted in a punt return touchdown, and the other after a fumble on a kickoff that gave the ball to the Steelers at the 20.

Meanwhile the Bengals allowed 17 points to the Browns the first game of the season when they weren't injured and 20 points the second time--right in the middle of the Steelers/Ravens games. So, you have to admit--there is really no more evidence that their recent problems have any more to do with injury than they do with better competition. After all, they performed almost exactly the same against the Browns with or without the injuries.

Dalton has had a great season, and I'm not too sure I wouldn't rather have him long-term but I'd go with Newton.

The more interesting debate is knowing what they know now would Carolina have traded with Buffalo to get a 1st and 2nd rounder to take Green and Dalton or would they rather have Newton?

Their defense has good stats mainly because they played terrible teams. When they play good teams they give up more yards and more points.

Great point. Cleveland is terrible on offense. They have scored 17 points twice, 19 once and 20 once. The 20 and one of the 17's were against the Gals and their top of the line D.
