Quite simply the difference is the schedule. Newton is in a really tough division and has to play GB's division this year. Let's not act like the Bengals have that much better of a roster. Like I said I'll take Steve Smith and those RB's and TE's every single time. Smith looked like he was declining b/c the person throwing to him was terrible. The Gals still have zero good wins except possibly at Tennessee but Tennessee benefited from Blaine Gabbert and Curtis Painter being in their division so I'm not sure how good that win is. I still say Gals win 10 games Dalton wins the award.

 

A top 5 defense, one of the best receivers in football, one of the best TE's, one of the best LT's all that is a pretty good core to start with. Not to mention a runningback that even though has struggled some this year, is a guy that other teams still key on, thats a pretty good thing to come into. If say Carolina had the Bengals defense, then they would have won a lot more games. He has given his team a chance just like Dalton, only difference is he doesn't have a defense who can come up with any stops. While the Bengals especially in the second half really shut down teams.

With the stats as similar as they are between Dalton and Newton. Right now for me it would go to Dalton simply because of the wins. He has repeatedly made winning plays when it counted.

Which can almost guarntee if they played Atlanta and New Orleans twice this year that the stats for Atlanta and New Orleans wouldn't be as good of offense either. I mean it works both ways, your right those teams would score more and put up more yards. However those same teams wouldn't score as much as they are use to or put up as many yards as they are use to if they played those defenses 4 times a year. Bad argument on your part. I understand your argument but it is not a good one. Especially when you can say the same thing about all defenses in the NFL if they played Green Bay and Saints 4 times a year. Which if every team had to do that, then most likely the Ravens, Steelers, and even Bengals would still be up near the top of the NFL in defense.

I really don't know why were arguing this SSC. All I have said is AT THIS POINT I would still give Newton the edge. It's not like I am saying no way Dalton should win it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he did, but Newton gets the edge right now IMO.

All 4 teams in AFC North are in top 6 in Defense. It probably has nothing to do with playing the NFC West and AFC south though. They probably all are just that good. Painter, Smith, Bradford, Kolb or his backup, Gabbert, and Tavaris Jackson or Whitehurst are non factors in determining how good your D is I guess. Ha

I don't think one week can decide who wins an award like this, but if there ever was one week, it would be this past one. Newton had a phenominal game. I'd rather see Dalton win it, but if I was a voter, my vote would go to Newton.

It's settled (OROY) because Dalton's biggest argument was his record. His record is still better, but when you look closely at the record they have 1 win against a team with a winning record. Newton's stats are continuing to pile up.

 

The top defense argument is silly and mostly subjective. Yards against is a decent measurement, but to not look at the schedule when evaluating that is dumb. It is abundantly clear that the Bengals have faced one very good QB (Ben) and one above average QB (Flacco) all year. If you don't think that is the biggest factor in their D's stats I can't help you, but you're way wrong. How many guys from the Gals D make the pro bowl this year? How many ever have made it?
