I'm anxious to see if Garrard throws the ball more this week. Billy Abney has thrown for around 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns with only 7 interceptions. He hasn't thrown it much the last couple weeks, however, because the running game has been so effective there hasn't been much need for passing. I think that could change Friday.

 

Two edged sword in the greatest sense. Balance may very well be key with this very talented Belfry defense and the Pirates are prone to short timing routes. The Pirates have been burnt deep at times this year, but then again Breathitt really didn't eve come close to hitting a deep ball on them and the Bobcats are masters of that.

 

On the flip side, the last thing Garrard can afford to do is stop the clock with incompletions or throw INT's which puts the Belfry offense on the field even longer. It's pretty obvious when you look at GCHS's 40 man roster and see how many guys play both ways as opposed to oft platooning Pirates that depth and fatigue could be a major factor. The last thing you want to do is allow Belfry to have even more time on the field and even more drives to grind with their physicality.

 

Garrard's offense is different then anything Belfry has seen this year in the sets that they use and the way they utilize their personnel. I actually quite enjoy the way Garrard runs their offense.

You won't be disappointed. Due to the new alignment there were several schools that came to Dyehouse Stadium that had never been before. All of the people that I spoke with talked about how they liked the facility, how close it was to the field of play, and how it seemed like everyone was in the game. We really hope you guys enjoy your trip as well.

I still can't get used to Belfry having great facilities. For many years, our football facilities were so lacking. When the county built a new Belfry High School, they did build ample seating, as I am sure the new Garrard field will have also when it is complete. I think some of us have been a little spoiled over the last few years.

 

As far as I am concerned, personally I don't care where they play. I am excited about this semifinal game and I will be happy to stand around the field somewhere if that is what it takes. If Belfry brings a large crowd and the bulk of them have to stand around the field, maybe we can create enough noise to make it like a home game. Instead of complaining about it, we should just embrace it and enjoy the ride. I'd definitely rather be standing and cheering on my Pirates than sitting home while somebody else plays in the semifinals.

I don't think they will open up the soccer field, just because that would require another gate to sell tickets. I'm also not sure if they would be able to provide seating there. I suspect the administration will end up placing a rope around the entire field and then allow standing behind it if necessary.

 

I have heard that they have been charging at the soccer gate anyways the past few games, for the people who park at the soccer parking lot and watch from their cars. They charge them the same $5 admission.

Right on! It'll be unique indeed.

All I can say is that Garrard and Rockcastle played here in 1995 and it was the largest crowd I've ever seen at Dyehouse Stadium. Guessing, I would put the number at 5,000 people. The stadium/grounds held it fine, although everyone was snug. I still am confident that everyone will fit fine come Friday night.

 

I respectfully disagree with that 5,000 guess. Might have been 2500-2800 max. Dyehouse only seats 1,800 in total. That's collectively on both sides (approx 450 on visitors side).

You probably know just as well as gchs_uk9 and I know, that most people stand along the south end zone anyways. I expect the standing to spread all the way to the north end zone also, and of course on the sides of the field. I can see 5,000 being held in Dyehouse.

Perhaps so. I'd always heard guesses, but never was sure. I was under the impression that Dyehouse had 3500 seats. Where did I get that number?

I just finished listening to Mark Scenters in an interview with WSIP Radio's Big Sandy Sportsline.

 

I was very impressed with him and thought he sounded like a first class guy. He said he was proud of this group and they are definitely enjoying being in the semifinals, but he had a very focused demeanor about him and he is obviously focused on Belfry. He acknowledged their team is on the small side, but they fly to the football and they execute well on offense. He was extremely compllimentary of Powell Co and Coach Burchett and also of Belfry and their personnel. It was a good listen.

 

Coach Haywood was interviewed next and said he thought Garrard was the most dangerous, probably the most athletic team as a whole that Belfry had played, and he said he thought that made them the best team Belfry has faced this season. He said it was tough to come off such a big, emotional, hard-fought game like Belfry had this Friday and then refocus the kids again for such a huge game against an opponent we know very little about. He said other than a few nicks and bangs, the Pirates were pretty good shape health wise.
